PRAIRIE POPS SPECTACULARJeffery Straker and the Handsome StrangersMaestro Victor Sawa conductor
Saskatchewan singer-songwriter-pianist Jeffery Straker performs his original compositions set to orchestral arrangement, along with well-known classics from prairie greats including Joni Mitchell, Connie Kaldor and Ian & Sylvia. This high energy orchestral show has been called “Simply spectacular...clearly one of the province’s best cultural
exports”(Regina Leader Post). The Toronto Star says “4 stars” (out of 4!) and “there’s rarely a note, chord, or word too many or too few. As a lyricist he’s at least the equal to any wordsmith (Elton) John has worked with.” This concert, full of prairie pride, is a must see.

Liberace, American showman and glittering pianist, was the highest paid entertainer in the world in the 1970s and ‘80s before his life and death became headlines. When asked about one harsh review, he quipped “I cried all the way to the bank.”
Veteran conductor and concert pianist Brian Jackson is one of Canada’s most beloved pops conductors. Now, Maestro Jackson brings the spirit of Liberace to life with re-creations of Liberace’s sparkling style, including a Gershwin medley, Chopin’s Nocturne, Flight of the Bumblebee, The Entertainer, the Warsaw Concerto, and Chariots of Fire, plus other show tunes and light classics.

To mark the coming end of the symphony season, the SSO presents Vivaldi’s perennial masterwork, with Austrian “ambassador of tonal sensuality,” Elena Denisova, performing the solo violin role in this supremely popular concerto, which paints vivid musical descriptions of the character of each distinct time of year. Denisova is joined by husband and noted conductor, pianist, and cembalist, Alexei Kornienko. One of their recent collaborations, a recording of the rarely performed chamber music version of Vivaldi‘s Four Seasons (DEKA), featuring Denisova on four historical violins and Kornienko‘s profound skill on the harpsichord, has been critically acclaimed throughout Europe. THE LOST WORLD (1925)Bill Rowson conductor
Before Jurassic Park, there was The Lost World. Based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1912 novella, the story only made it to screen due to the special effects genius of Willis O’Brien, whose model dinosaurs were so convincing. The dinosaurs are the stars, but the human cast is led by Wallace Beery as blustery Professor Challenger, who leads an expedition to a lost mesa where dinosaurs still rule and returns to London with a brontosaurus. Havoc ensues.

People are still talking about the affair the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra and Saskatoon Opera had last March. Now we’re about to have another!
We are pleased to announce the special guest performing at The Red and Black Affair 2013 will be soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian. Ms. Bayrakdarian has performed in many of the world’s great opera houses, recital stages and concert halls. and she is heard on the Grammy®award-winning soundtrack of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. She will be accompanied by the musicians of the Saskatoon Symphony.
During our last affair, guests were wined and dined par excellence at the Delta Bessborough. Flowers by Fred created a breathtaking mood with thousands of red roses. Guests were treated to auc-tions of the crystalline ceramic work of Rod and Denyse Simair, and paintings and pieces donated by the artists of Art Placement and Darrell Bell Gallery. Other donors included Trading Post, June Jacobs and Debra Marshall. Red and Black 2013 takes place Saturday, October 5th, at the Delta Bessborough.
Tickets will be available through the SSO or Saskatoon Opera. Get yours early, as this event will be a sellout!
