Saving People Time
The Quickway Proposal was designed in great measure to make transit faster—a lot faster—than current or planned transit. In fact, our goal was to make transit competitive with driving, to give San Diegans a viable option when considering their daily trip-making needs.
In the maps that follow, we show current transit times (as given by Google for a weekday 9 am arrival time) and then projected travel times under the Quickway Proposal, given our proposed infrastructure and route system and using industry-standard assumptions for acceleration, deceleration, and dwell times.

Travel Time ComparisonSOUTH BAY
We’ll start with the South Bay, which currently features a light rail (Trolley) line from Downtown to the border at San Ysidro. We chose a representative set of major destinations in order to show differences in travel time between current transit and the Quickway Proposal.

The Quickway Proposal averaged trip times less than 1/3 that of current transit, making transit fully competitive with the automobile for the first time.
Factor in peak-period road congestion and time spent parking, and some people would enjoy faster transit trips than the equivalent drive.

Travel Time ComparisonCENTRAL
For the Central zone, there are too many key destinations to provide an individual introduction to. But most San Diegans will recognize most of the locations we chose for our analysis of comparative travel times.

CENTRAL
Even in the Central zone, with its more extensive transit infrastructure and services (including light rail, freeway bus and arterial “rapid bus”), the Quickway Proposal produced transit trips that averaged nearly 60% faster than current transit trips, again making transit competitive with driving for many trips.

Travel Time ComparisonNORTH COUNTY
For the North County zone, distances tend to be longer than for Central and South zones. Major transit infrastructure in this zone includes the Sprinter light rail connecting Oceanside with Escondido, the I-15 Managed Lanes and off-line stations, and the Coaster commuter rail. Even so, the Quickway Proposal manages to significantly reduce travel times between and among key destinations.

Travel time savings in North County average 70%, though in some cases this is because of the lack of current transit options. Even so, many transit times become competitive with driving under the Quickway Proposal.

Conclusions
For the 54 trip pairs we looked at in South, Central, and North County, the average transit travel time reduction was 65%, nearly 2/3 less than current transit travel times.
The Quickway Proposal, by producing transit trips which are competitive with driving, is more likely as a result to attract people who might otherwise drive, leading to a major increase in transit ridership and a reduction in pressure on our freeways, roads, and parking lots.
