OBJECTIVES Primary objectives:
•To function as a National Organization for training in the field of - (a) Operation and Maintenance of Power Stations; and (b) All other aspects of Electrical Energy Systems including Transmission, Sub-Transmission and Distribution.
•To act as an apex body for initiating and coordinating training programs in the Power Sector of the country.
•To establish and run Training Institutes for Engineers, Operators, Technicians and other personnel of the Power Sector.
Subsidiary objectives:
•To identify and assess the training needs of the Power Sector in the country.•To coordinate the training activities of the various Utilities with those of other Technical Training Institutions and supplement it with the training programs of its own Institutes.
• To establish standard norms regarding qualifications and training for personnel of various levels.
• To serve as a National Certification Authority for the purpose of Certification of Competence and/or participation to ensure availability of properly trained personnel to man the Electricity Supply Industry.
• To initiate, conduct and coordinate the research and development studies in the field of Operation, Maintenance and Management of Power Generation and Transmission Systems and to prepare and conduct specialized training programs thereof.
• To establish, maintain and manage laboratories, workshops, experimental transmission lines, sub-stations and other facilities required in pursuance of its objectives.
• To collect information and maintain documentation in the field of electricity generation and distribution.
• To collect, prepare, edit, print and publish material, papers, periodicals or reports in furtherance of the objectives of the Society.
• To organize seminars and workshops.• To enter into agreement with any enterprise or institution or person
and provide funds to them for specific training programs, demonstrations, assignments, preparation of training material or technical guidance.

Program Structure:
•Four-year Program spread over Eight (8) Semesters.•The Curriculum is designed to impart Basic Sciences, Engineering fundamentals and Power Sector specific subjects approx. in the ratio of 40:60 with theory & practical's.•In first year, students take courses in general engineering & basic sciences.•In the second year, students take up courses on fundamentals of engineering of various discipline relevant to Power Plant Engineering•In the third year, students are exposed to Engineering & technological aspects of Power Plant including Power Plant visits.•In the Fourth year, students take up advanced courses in Power Plant subjects including Power Plant Visits, Simulator Training, Industrial Visits & Project work.

Core Competencies
1.Basic Sciences
The courses on basic sciences at initial level of the course helps the students to establish a firm base on science fundamentals which is essential to understand fundamentals of engineering & Power Plant Engineering.
The subjects like Engineering Physics, Engineering Chemistry, Engineering Mathematics etc., are included to establish a firm fundamental base.

2. Basic Engineering
The basic engineering subjects are the part of course to create a firm understanding of engineering fundamentals considering that the power engineering being multidisciplinary course the engineering fundamentals base is a must.
The subjects like Engineering Graphics (Drawing), Engineering Mechanics, Electrical Engineering with Theoretical & Practical lessons helps to establish basic engineering knowledge.
3. Core Engineering
The B.E. (Power Engineering) is a multi disciplinary program which requires core competency in various disciplines of engineering like electrical, mechanical, control & Instrumentation, electronics & computer etc. The core engineering subjects in second/third year of the program are aimed at establishing a good knowledge & understanding of core engineering subjects through theory & practicals
The subjects like Auto control, Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Energy conversion, Machine design, Fluid Power, Basic electrical Machines, Switchgear & protection, Electronics, computers etc. Theory & practicals establish competency in core engineering subjects to fully understand power plant engineering.
Power Plant Engineering
The ultimate aim of the B.E. (Power Engineering) program is to develop power engineers with strong fundamentals & Practical knowledge of various areas of a power plant.The power plant engineering subjects are the major part of course curriculum to develop core competency in the areas of Boiler, Turbine, generator electrical system, control Instrumentation, operation, performance efficiency, erection commissioning, maintenance etc., through theory, practicals, visits, on-job training, simulator training, case studies & project work etc.The subjects like Power plant layout, Power Generation technology, Steam Generator & Auxiliaries, Turbine & Auxiliaries., Turbo Generator & Auxiliaries, Power Plant Erection & Commissioning, Power Plant Operation & Performance, Power Plant Maintenance Practices with frequent visits to power industry.The practical training through visits to various power plants, Scheme Tracing, On-Job training, case studies & project work etc. helps in firming up the knowledge about power industry.Hands on training on state-of-the-art full scope Thermal Power Plant Simulator Training develops core competency in power plant operations & emergencies
