Dear Parishioners,

Well, we’ve made it through the first week of Lent 2018 and we all seem no

worse for wear. I’m confident that all of us will do what it takes to get us

through to a glorious Easter.

Weather-wise, there’s a world of difference between last weekend and this

weekend. Instead of piles of snow, we now see the ground, pavement and

streets. Instead of sub-freezing temperatures, the present weather seems

positively balmy. Instead of frozen ground we’ve been experiencing mud

and water run-off. Yes, year in, year out, always the same story. Ah the

permanence of impermanent things!

Still, I would much rather have a little mud than icey streets. How about

you? Temperatures in the 40s are better than temperatures in the teens,

right? It’s also easier on our gas bill.

Well, even though the formulation of preliminary CMAA statistics hasn’t

yet begun, I’m pleased to tell you that I have already dispatched 25

envelopes for processing. I’m sure we haven’t quite made it to our goal just

yet, but I am sure that we WILL make it and, again that we’ll show the

diocese that St. Joseph Church ain’t no slouch!

The Ordinary Form of the Mass is fortunate to have the story of the testing

of Abraham by God. God ordered Abraham to sacrifice his only son – the

son of the promise. Abraham’s immediate obedience ultimately showed his

complete trust in God and in the covenant God made with him. This story

also establishes that, ultimately, Isaac is a “type” of Christ, that is, being

himself offered in sacrifice.

Happily, both forms of the Mass have, as the gospel segment, the story of

Our Lord’s Transfiguration. It is here that He was transfigured before Peter,

James and John, the usual and most privileged “triumvirate” among the

Disciples. It is here that they glimpsed not only Our Lord’s future corporeal

glorification, but the ultimate, salvific glorification of man on the last day –

that is, for those who have walked in God’s ways and who have kept His

Commandments and who, as necessary, have endured purgatorial

purification.

Wonderful when gospels coincide, right, my children and my friends?

Father Magiera
