summary tables (methodology and indicators)
1. BROCHURE:Recommendations concerning health and safety
• The respect of the human person is the basis of the Health and Safety policy of the SAINT-GOBAIN Group. This policy concerns the plant personnel as well as the outside contractors personnel working on site.
• This brochure aim is to remind clearly the responsibilities and obligations of the different actors involved during outside contractors interventions, as far as the health and safety of their personnel are concerned.
THE HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICYOF THE SAINT GOBAIN GROUP
The basis of this policy:- Safety is the first sign of respect for every member of
staff:One must not harm the integrity of the person
- Safety is a priority which must become absolute:Safety is the first priority
Health and Safety are an absolute must
The manager of a plant is responsible for the Health and Safety of his personnel and has his responsibility at stake for all personnel working on his site in matters of Health and Safety.
THE GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF PREVENTIONIN HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK
1. Eliminate or avoid risks2. Detect, anticipate, evaluate and reduce the risks which
cannot be eliminated3. Fight risks at source4. Privilege prevention through information and training5. Replace what is hazardous by what is less hazardous6. Adapt work to the employee7. Privilege collective protection8. Use individual protection as a last recourse9. Take into account changes in technique10.Give appropriate instructions to the personnel
2. 60 seconds TESTEmployees have to fill a test before starting their work. If there is one or more negative answers, employees should refuse to start the work and turn to their direct manager for clarification.
3. Safety visits – SMAT (safety management tool)• SMAT is a tool for the observation of safety practices in the field. It must be
done by a top manager or a manager. The management of the site must have been previously informed. As “cross audits”, any person carrying out a SMAT must have been specially trained.
• The acronym means both Safety and Senior MAnagement Tool: two names for the same tool, but deployed at different moments (from the General Management to middle management and local management).
• Global implementation of a SMAT• The SMAT is scheduled with the site manager: day and time. The operator
and his/her immediate superior can be informed before the SMAT (it depends on the site management advice).
• Then, they thank the operator, highlight the positive points observed and seek, if possible, immediate corrective action (behavioural or organisational).
• The manager fills the SMAT form. Copies of this form are given to the operator and to the site manager, who is responsible for the monitoring of the action plan decided. To be efficient, SMAT must become an integral part of the life of the sites of the Group: it must be carried out frequently enough to become a habit
• SMAT is a safety visit, which shows the commitment of the management in safety. Its objective is also to efficiently raise awareness about safety in the field.
• The commitment of the management is essential (it makes SMAT more visible to operators). SMAT is not an inspection, but a dialogue founded on respect and the desire to communicate positively and interactively.
1. Safety visit is being implemented. 2. Discussions on the filled safety visit form with participation of the worker and his direct manager.
