From the Pastor’s Desk...
ST. CLARE OF ASSISI – This Tuesday (Aug. 11) we will celebrate the Memorial of St. Clare of Assisi, who struggled for forty years to obtain the “privilege of poverty” for herself and her
sisters. In 1253---two days after having received papal permission to have poverty as the centerpiece of their way of life---Clare died. Our Archdiocese is blessed to have a convent of the contemplative Poor Clares in Langhorne, Bucks County.
SAINT JANE DE CHANTAL – will be the saint we celebrate this Wednesday (Aug. 12). The mother of six children (three died shortly after they were born), she was widowed at the age of 28 and died in 1641. Through her friendship with St. Francis de Sales (d. 1622) Jane
was inspired to start associating with other women in such a manner that they developed into the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary. I once asked a daughter of St. Jane how come her community was named “Visitation” since they were cloistered and didn’t go outside of their monastery. Who were they visiting? She told me that they viewed each encounter as a visit from God and they made Mary’s visit to Elizabeth the symbol of their ministry. “Live Jesus!” is the motto of the Visitation Sisters and our Archdiocese is blessed to have a Visitation Convent on City Line Avenue in Philadelphia.
SAINT MAXIMILIAN KOLBE - This Friday (Aug. 14) will be the Memorial of St. Maximilian who died on that date in 1941 after taking the place of another prisoner
who had been condemned to death. Blessings to the members of St. Maximilian Parish in West Chester on the feast of their patron saint.
ASSUMPTION – We will celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a 9:00 AM Mass in chapel this Saturday. Happy Feast Day to our friends in St. Mary of
the Assumption Parish here in Phoenixville---the first parish in our Archdiocese named in honor of this sacred event.
78 Years Ago – on this date in 1942 St. Edith Stein was killed in the Auschwitz death camp. Nine years before her execution, when she entered the Carmelite monastery, she took the name Sister Teresia Benedicta a Cruce, that is, Teresa Blessed by the Cross. Unfortunately, her
Latin name is usually translated as “of the Cross”, but this misses the depth of her experience. She saw the Cross in her life as a blessing rather than as a curse, as a source of grace, as something to be embraced rather than shunned. Have we ever had a similar experience? Our Tradition puts it, “See how the Cross of the Lord stands revealed as the Tree of Life.” The important thing is to discern which cross is our True Cross (the Cross Jesus wants us to bear) at a given point in our journey.
77 Years Ago – on this date in 1943 Blessed Franz Jaegerstadder, a husband and father of four young daughters, was beheaded by the Nazis for his refusal to participate in a war he judged to be evil. Franz was not so much a conscientious objector as he was a conscientious profess-er. His
following Christ put him at odds with the dominant culture of his time and place. The recent film A Hidden Life is a good way to get to know Franz, his wife Fannie and their journey in discipleship.
75 Years Ago – on this date in 1945 an atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. Last November in Nagasaki Pope Francis taught, “One of the deepest
longings of the human heart is for security, peace and stability….The possession of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction is not the answer to this desire.”
ST. LAWRENCE – This Monday (Aug. 10) we’ll celebrate the Feast of St. Lawrence who was the archdeacon of the Church of Rome and is venerated as one of the four major patron saints of that city (along with Peter, Paul and Agnes). One day in the year 231 A.D.
the emperor Alexander Serverus commanded Lawrence to surrender the Church’s treasures. Lawrence showed up the next day with folks who were poor, homeless, orphaned, widowed, mentally impaired stating: “I present to you the treasures of the Church of Rome.” Shortly thereafter Lawrence was burned alive on a gridiron.

Please pray for the sick, disabled, homebound members of our Parish Family.
Counting Our Blessings!Your donations help us fulfill our parish mission
and make improvements to our facilities. Thank you for your generosity!
Thanks to the 83 individuals or families who in July used our online Sunday donation program through the parish website. The Sunday collection is our main source of funds that enable us to fulfill the core mission we have received from the Risen Lord: to seek out and serve those in need; to worship the Father; to share the Good News of Jesus.
If you appreciate the ease of online banking and bill paying, you will be happy to know that you can easily offer your regular Sunday donation to St. Ann with automatic online donations. Visit https://churchofsaintann.org/donations to learn more, make a one-time gift, or create a personal recurring gift account.
Thank you for your support over the years and especially in these challenging days of the Covid 19 pandemic.
Webinars on Domestic Violence The Office for Child and Youth Protection and Congreso de Latinos Unidos will be hosting a free, 3-part webinar series on
