What is aquaculture?
Production of aquatic animals and plants where at least one phase of the life-cycle
is controlled
Over 30 species are commercially cultured in Hawai`i
![Page 3: Safe Sustainable Seafood- Sea Grant Aquaculture Extension Maria Haws, Robert Howerton, Kathleen McGovern-Hopkins, Darren Okimoto, Clyde Tamaru, Jim Szyper,](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081504/56649d625503460f94a45368/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Rationale
• U.S. imports 80% of its seafood• > 50% of all seafood consumed is farmed• World aquaculture production increasing
~15-20% annually• Hawai`i aquaculture annual value ~$37 million
($25 million production, $12 million research and technology)
• Demand for non-food products growing rapidly (pharmaceuticals, pearls, food additives)
