The Lake Forester • July 2021 • 3

As we strive this year to increase member participation in governing the Lake Forest Property Owners Associa-tion, we have opened our committees to more resident members, and the re-sponse has been outstanding.

There are fresh faces on every com-mittee, bringing new ideas and enthu-siasm. This is es-pecially important because we need the help of many hands.

We are commit-ted to expanding residents’ sense of community. Among our strat-egies: increasing communication and transparency, pro-viding more social activities through-out the year, encouraging Yacht Club dining and continuing the live broad-cast of our monthly meetings.

While the ad-hoc Yacht Club renova-tion committee has completed its work (in spectacular fashion!), our other committees are settling in and produc-ing results.

Perhaps the biggest news to date is the work of the Governing Documents Committee, chaired by Jesse Oswalt.

The group is charged with evaluating the effectiveness of all the documents related to Lake Forest life, from the bylaws and covenants to house and ground rules.

Its first recommendation, which was approved by the Board for posting and public comment, is to rescind Bylaws Section 2.7, commonly known as the “Confidentiality Section.”

This is the section that banned mem-bers from using recording devices in Board meetings and prohibited mem-bers from telling non-members about the Board’s meeting agenda or minutes or sharing information about Associa-tion finances.

The recommendation was approved by the Board for posting in order to gain member comments prior to the Board’s considering a formal motion on the proposed change.

Residents received an email about this proposed change and were invit-ed to comment. The earliest the Board can vote on the bylaws amendment is at the July 22 meeting, so be sure to get your comments to Communications Committee Chairman Dale McGinnis @ [email protected].

Dale will collate the comments and distribute them to the Board prior to the vote.

To read the complete report on the

proposed change, log in to the Member Central section, click on “Quick Links” and go to the item called “2.7 Proposed Bylaw Change.”

You can expect more communication about proposed changes as we move throughout the year. Once the Board authorizes posting a proposed change

for comment, res-idents will have at least 30 days to voice their opin-ions before the Board votes.

There will be times this year when you can vote in favor of events simply by attend-

ing. The Events and Recreation Commit-

tee is composing an events calendar for children and adults for the entire year, with at least one event per month and sometimes as many as three. You can count on seasonal and holiday events, and the Fall yard sale looks as if it will be in mid-October.

Health fairs, children’s story hours and craft markets are among the ideas being discussed. Got an idea? Tell Committee Chairman Richard Goddard ([email protected]).

The Facilities Committee is working on recommendations for playground equipment and where to site it at the Yacht Club. The group plans to present several equipment designs for member comment before finalizing recommen-dations to the Board.

Acting on the committee’s recom-mendation, the Board has approved demolishing the former harbor mas-ter’s shack in the parking lot just north of the Yacht Club. Permits have been pulled, and the Board is soliciting bids.

You might notice that the 19th Hole looks brighter. Shine the spotlight on Facilities for getting the job done with an LED upgrade.

The Lake Environmental Committee continues its work on the ambitious plan to restore our namesake lake and make it a dynamic, thriving part of our community for fishing and boating and as a wildlife habitat.

This is a long, intense process of preparation because it involves scien-tific research and framing language for grant applications and regulatory per-mits. It’s a tribute to our community’s professional diversity that we can re-cruit from among residents and get ex-perts in government, the environment

and the sciences, as well as conserva-tionists and fishing enthusiasts.

Perhaps you’ve noticed the differenc-es in our website recently. It’s the result of a wonderful relationship between the Communications Committee and webmaster Mike Albrecht, whom you also know as our tennis professional.

Mike and the committee have worked to create an events calendar, which we expect to grow into a must-read piece of weekly information for members.

Mike also has added a “Quick Links”

menu option on the members page that makes it more convenient to use the Zoom link for meetings and access to common documents, such as bylaws, covenants and an organizational chart. If you haven’t looked at the “Common Documents” link under the Member Central pulldown, you’re in for a pleas-ant surprise.

Our hope to improve as an Associa-tion rests on your participation.

Let’s make this the year we come to-gether in a common cause: creating an organization that improves Lake Forest and serves all residents.

A Little Bit About Sugarcane Jane…Sugarcane Jane is Anthony Crawford

and Savana Lee — Americana’s hus-band-wife duo from Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Between them, they have de-cades of rich musical experience: An-thony’s an in-demand multi-instrumen-talist and producer who has worked with such notables as Neil Young, Steve Winwood, and Dwight Yoakam. The music they make together is simple and direct, rooted in country and rock, and anchored by their sweet and soulful harmonies.

Joining Dwight Yoakam’s Fall 2019 Tour and Spring 2021 as support act, they have put together an incredible band to back them up - Pete Nice on pedal steel/lap steel/mandolin, Gary

Edmonds on electric guitar, and Leif Bondarenko on drums, all hailing out of Anthony’s hometown of Birmingham, Alabama.

Sugarcane Jane’s latest release and tenth studio album, Ruffled Feathers; Songs in the Key of Me — came out in a flurry of thoughts over a one week pe-riod. Recorded, mixed, and mastered at Admiral Bean Studio in Loxley, Ala-bama. CD packaging includes a 12 page lyric booklet. Official release date is set for Aug. 14, 2020. Lake Forest Garden ClubLake Forest Garden ClubBarry Breeland and his wife Cyndy

have created an exquisite landscape at 105 Ferncliffe on a cul de sac off Roll-ing Hill Drive. Having lived 20 years at this house they've found just the right plants in their happy location. The deep green St Augustine grass is en-abled by using 4 products mentioned on the " Lawn Care Nut" which is on a YouTube channel. Those products are humic acid, micronutrients, Air 8, and a root growth stimulant.

The delivery companies were cutting across the grass to reach the front door so now there is a sign saying keep off the grass to encourage using the drive-way and footpath to reach the front door. This lawn is Barry's pride and joy, this pride appears to be spreading to the neighbors on Ferncliff.

There has been a large patch of tiger lilies in the front garden and pink aza-leas have been blooming for months. On the opposite side, there is an arch-way covered in Confederate Jasmine. The fragrance reminds Barry of Barq's root beer. Going on to the back garden there are paving stones with well cared for pots of color tended by Cyndy, who works full time but still can support this family effort in creating a fabu-lous yard. A restful pond with koi is in the middle of this backyard oasis. with a rock garden created by Cyndy. The strong background of color is a living hedge of blue hydrangeas that are enjoyed by the golfing communi-ty. The grass clippings build a barrier from the golf course water runoff, also giving the hydrangeas a healthy dose of natural fertilizer. These hydrangeas were just tiny starts/ cuttings that have now matured into a healthy blanket of

blue blooms receiving sun from mid morning to mid afternoon Giant blue Agapanthus will also be a part of this flower garden.

Thank you to all Lake Forest neigh-bors who are maintaining tidy flour-ishing landscapes. We may be able to do another yard of the quarter soon as there are many deserving yards right now.

If you would like to nominate a neighbor or your own yard contact Jane Spicciani at 251-423-0700 or tell your favorite garden club member so that we can drive by and look at your yard.

Specializing in Individual and Small Business Tax Preparation

Submitted by Brian L. Barker, PGAHead Golf Professional

July is here! What some people call the start of the “Dog days of Summer.” Here’s a tip to enjoy these hot days; go to the beach, go to the pool, go out on a boat but my favorite,

riding down a beau-tiful fairway in a golf cart. If you love golf as I do, prepare for the round and the heat will not be a problem. I first off, recommend riding and not walking in this heat. Get an ice chest from the 19th Hole Grill and fill it with plenty of water, powerade and some type of energy

snack. Also, take a tow-el for your clubs and one just for you to wipe off perspiration. In ad-dition, do not forget to dress for the heat — that’s very important. Do these few things and you’ll have a great time and maybe lower that score.

Our Memorial Day Scramble hosted by the

Senior Golfers Golf As-sociation was held in late May with the results as follows: 1st Place Gross (58) – John Basco, Jim Courtois, Tommy Stutts, Joe Scrimpshire; Senior Couples division – 1st Place Gross (63) Laura Pitre, Ed Dorgan, B. Stout, A. Stout; 1st Place Net (42) Linda France, Mike George,

Terry Andrews, Rusty Carroll; 2nd Place Net (45) Sharon St Laurent, Bill Bullock, Barbara Swanger, Mike Lindsey. Congratulations to all or our winners!

Summer Junior Golf Camps are well under-way, and we are having a great time! There are still opportunities to sign up for the upcom-

ing camp, July 26-29, don’t miss out. Visit our website lakeforest-daphne.com to find the form under “amenities, junior golf”.

Do not forget, we will have our Annual 4th of July Scramble on Satur-day the 5th (observed). Call the Golf Shop at 251-626-9324 for de-tails and registration.

It is never too late to sign your child up for the #1 tennis and swim camp on the Eastern Shore. We have two more weeks of camp in July. Camps run 4 days a week from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Pack the swim gear, snack and a drink and tennis racquet if you have one. If you do not we will provide one for you. We even feed them

lunch, it’s pizza every-day!! Check our website at www.lakeforestdaph-ne.com for more details and to download the reg-istration form.

Remember, we are a full service pro shop that regrips and restrings rac-quets. The old saying is that you should have your racquet restrung as many times a year as you play in a week.

Also, with summer heat and the summer sweat, you should replace that overgrip on your racquet quite often. Stop by and we can let you know if your racquet and grip need replacing.

The 3.0 ladies class on Tuesday’s from 8:30-10 a.m. will remain the same through the whole summer and rest of the year. Our ladies open

class on Friday’s from 9-10:30 a.m. will also re-main the same through the summer and rest of the year. If you are not a member and would like to try the classes, you can do so for a month. After the month, you are required to become a racquet club member in order to participate in the classes and other programs we offer.

Let’s not forget about the men’s social play on Saturday morning’s start-ing at 8:30 a.m. If you live in Lake Forest it’s free to come on out and play on the clay courts. Come join us, we are al-ways looking for some more players and good, friendly competition.

The racquet club is open for singles and doubles member play

and private and group lessons. It is required you email court reserva-tions to [email protected] so we can have it ready for you. The pro shop is open for restroom use only during court reservations. Come out and get one of the greatest forms of exercise on the planet….TENNIS. Let us know how we can help.
