Future Release for Shipbuilders
I have recently received a ship model from a manufacturer called Dodo Models, they do 1/700 resin ships (mostly mod-ern). There was a note attached to the kit saying that a RNZN ship was going to be released soon - they did not say which, but they have already done an early and late version of the Austra-lian ANZAC frigates. They do some interesting subject matter - for example they also did the Australian Armidale patrol boat. In the box the quality of Dodo models looks very good (I haven’t actually built one yet). I have found them on ebay - if looking for them on ebay it pays to search Dodomodels as one word and as two Dodo models, you get different results!

Following on from Part 1 in the October newsletter, Part 2 covers post-1950 NATO and Warsaw Pact collections at Australian Armour and Artillery Museum in Cairns.
Looking a lot cooler in my shades than the 30°C outside, on entering the Museum I came face to face with the i m p re s s i v e and well-p r e s e r v e d Best of British, Chieftain MBT. I could the strains of Uriah Heep’s “Salisbury” album playing in the back-ground and found myself waiting for the orange smoke and Leyland L60 powerpack to fire up. Alas this was not to be, and I had to be content with quietly humming a few strains from “Salisbury” to myself, which got some strange looks from the younger generation who obviously had no taste for original Hard Rock Music. Youth is so wasted on the young!
Of interest and a surprise was a post WWII conversion of a Churchill Flail Mine clearing version which I thought were WWII era but did service in the Korean War as well.
There are also a number of ex-Royal Australian Armoured Corps Centurions on display.
The selection of Warsaw Pact hardware from WW2 era T34-85, SU100s to the later T54/55 and T-72, BMP1, and BTR-60 captured more of my attention, having seen a lot of this hardware a lifetime ago in the bush and dust of Southern Africa. One of the most impressive pieces of Soviet hardware on display was the massive 2S7 Pion Self Propelled Artillery piece below.

The Russian S-75 Dvina SAM (Surface to Air Missile), Mobile launcher and Transporter. I last saw one of these in the back of a C-130 transporter in Namibia as captured booty from Angola on its way back to South Africa for examination.
Once again, I’ll let the pictures do the talking for the rest of the article and happy to answer any questions on FaceBook or at our next club meet.

At time of writing a Panther V was undergoing restoration, which provides a perfect excuse for a return visit later next year and just to end off, I did NOT bring any “paint chip samples” back with me for paint research purposes, despite rumours to the contrary!
