Roughness Measurement in Machine Tools
Producing the highest quality within the shortest period of time – this is the target of a machining production. Thereby, not only the dimensional size accuracy is of vital importance, also the surface quality must fulfil the requirements. BLUM surface roughness gauges close this gap within the process chain: Thanks to the proven hardware and ingenious software, poor surfaces can be detected automatically and rapidly on the machine tool. Result: 100 % good parts and maximum productivity.
Surface roughness gauges by BLUM are specially designed for the extreme requirements of high-productive machining centres. They are coolant-resitant and IP68 rated, making them entirely suitable for machine tools.
Your benefit:
• Automated measurement without manual intervention by the operator
• Poor surfaces are already recognised in the machining centre
• No continued production of NOK-parts due to downstream, external measurement
• Recognising problems in the cutting process
• Reduced costs: > Usage of the tools until the end of service life > Less rejects

Software for Roughness Measurement RG 2.0
Specially developed for the use of BLUM surface roughness gauges, BLUM RG 2.0 offers the perfect opportunity for data entry, calculation and evaluation of the roughness values, recorded in the machining centre.
Features:
• Automatic calculation of the roughness parameters
• Visualisation at the control screen or BLUM Touch Panel TP48-21
• Flexible definition of warning and tolerance limits per measuring path
• Alarm output when exceeding the warning and tolerance limits
• Immediate processing and editing of the measuring results
• Providing the tracked data in a log-file
Conformity of BLUM Roughness Measurements
Roughness measurements in machine tools are subject to more complex requirements than is the case with conventional measurements outside the machine. The measuring values, recorded by BLUM surface roughness gauges, are oriented to the generally applicable standards DIN EN ISO 4287 and ASME B46.1.
Following roughness parameters may be detected and edited:
Ra: Arithmetic average roughness value Rz: Average roughness depth Rq: Square average roughness value Rt: Total height of the profile (roughness) Rmax: Maximum roughness depth
Comparative Test
Measurement of a precision component with a conventional surface roughness gauge and the machine integrated system BLUM TC64-RG.
Conventional surface roughness gauge
BLUM TC64-RG
Roughness parameter
Conventional TC64-RG
Ra 0.63 0.59
Rz 3.95 3.85
Rmax 5.91 5.68
Result: The roughness values, defined by BLUM TC64-RG are comparable with those of a conventional, external surface roughness gauge.
