Air Pollution in London: Exposure and Deprivation
Rosie Brook6th March 2017
Project Outline:Aim: To understand inequalities in access to clean
air in London.
Objectives: • Analyse the relationship between exposure to
AP and deprivation• Through presenting our results, increase public
awareness and support a mandate for action.
What other applications for AP data are there?
Air Quality Data:Annual average air quality concentrations of NO2, PM10 and PM2.5 across London in 2013 at a 20m: http://www.londonair.org.uk/london/asp/annualmaps.asp
• Aggregated to OA and LSOA
Predicted concentrations also available for 2020, 2025 and 2030
Disclaimer: future estimates are to be updated later this year based on methodology developments such as new COPERT emission factors which take closer account of “real world driving” emissions from road vehicles.
Air Quality Data:
• Areas of deprivation (2015):• Combined IMD• Income
• Each LSOA Allocated to a deprivation decile (10% of groups)

Population Data:Most vulnerable age groups:• Schools (average concentrations within a
150m buffer around each school)• Under 19• Over 65
Total Population Exposure: Exposure to NO2
concentrations > 40 µg/m³(at OA level)
Results: DeprivationExposure to exceedances:
In areas of poor air quality, where the annual mean NO2 limit value is exceeded, 32% of people are from the most deprived groups, whereas only 7% are from the least deprived.

Mandate for action
Summary• Combining air pollution data with
population data to understand exposure• Using analysis to draw attention to air
quality issues• Air quality is a sensitive issue, through
suitable analysis can gain some robust and clear messages•What other applications are there for
existing AQ data?
