What is Creativity?
Wikipedia
• Creativity is a phenomenon whereby something new and in some way valuable is created
Michael Mumford:
• “Over the course of the last decade, however, we seem to have reached a general agreement that creativity involves the production of novel, useful products” [1]
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi:
• "the process of producing something that is both original and worthwhile" or "characterized by originality and expressiveness and imaginative" [2]

Benefits of Creativity
Adaptation
• We have adapted to new challenges
Creativity leads to the following:
Ultimately people overcome what is presented to them in a new way
Invention
• Results in new designs
Progression
• Progress is made
Evolution
• Continue along a path of evolution – opposite to stagnating

An example
Burj Khalifa: Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Became the tallest structure in the world in 2010
Adaptation to the challenge – “cranes lifting cranes”
Invention in a new style of building
Progress in the form of new heights
We have evolved in the way to build
Ultimately overcame the challenge of creating the
highest building in the world

Another example
They adapted from their observations
and technology available at the time
Invention of aircraft controls that made
fixed-wing powered flight possible
Progress – powered flight!
First controlled, powered and sustained human flight, The Wright Brothers,
1903
Evolved from bicycling mechanics
to aeronautical engineers
Overcome their competitors in
being the first

Problems with Creativity
Its boundless and misdirected
Physics provides a
ready made platform for traditional
architecture
Unless there is perspective; where am I?
Unless there are limits; what can I do?
Unless there is the correct environmental conditions; what are the
correct materials?

Problems with Creativity (in IT)
Anything is possible
IT practitioners work from
“pure thought stuff” –
anything is possible
The medium appears to have no ready made constraints
This leads to optimism – people expect few difficulties in
implementation

Another factor: Maturity of the creator
Why is this important?
As it determines
what is created
Using relevant experience; they know what has worked before
Environmental awareness; tools and methods
Proven practice; patterns and methods
Boundaries; knowledge of where they lie, and the confidence to work
within them
