Mr. Smith was one of 28 localofficials from throughout theI nited States to attend tlie Officeof Civil Defense Staff College inBattle Creek , Mich . He workedwith professional planners to de-vel op methods b\ which the localgovernment of Suffolk County canbest develop an essential falloutshelter program for tlie generalpublic.

In addition to defining tiie civildefense program as conductedbvthe Federal , State and local juris -dictions of government , this spe-cial training covered nuclear at-tack considerations and tlie ef-fects of modern weaponry.I ndpr Icontract with the Office of C ivil 'Defense, tlie course at Staff Col-lege was conducted bv the 1 m-versitv of Tennessee Graduate iSchool of Planning. The place oftlie planners and tiie planningagency in developing some sixsteps for a total community shel-ter program were discussed mrelationship to urban planning,contracting, organizing and staff-ing.

This planning is being consid-ered here in order to providethe public with information need-ed as to where fallout shelter islocated , how best to allocate it,and what emergency measureswill be necessary in the event ofattack on tins nation.

Also among the feature attrac-tions in the 1966 Armed ForcesDay Open House festivities milbe demonstrations by the BaseFire Department and the HH-43B¦"Huskie" turbo-jet helicopter,commonly known as the "FlyingFire Engine."

The George Washington Medalof Honor Freedoms Foundationa\vard was recently presented tothe River Avenue School , Patch-ogue, for a unit of study con-cerning American govenmentandthe responsibilities of Americancitizens , which was completed bygrade 5-10.

The medal ls engraved withthese words : "For OutstandingAchievement in Bringing About aBetter Understanding of the A-merican Way of Life ."
