COMPAC

COMPAC is a 3 year EU funded project running until 14.07.2017. It aims tointegrate production of an all-cellulose composite (ACC), commonly known asvulcanised fibre, with a conventional reel-to-reel paper and board makingprocess. Integration to existing production processes to secure economicfeasibility and it is the innovation objective that separates us from othersimilar research projects.

Application possibilitiesBy developing a strong bio-based material for the packaging industryCOMPAC project aims to create value for our project partners by reducingtransport costs, increasing the value of the products and replacing non-recyclable materials.

Future implicationsProperties of plasticised fibre material are comparable to glass-fibrecomposites and plastics. Effective use of overcapacity of reel-to-reel paperand cardboard production lays a possibility to push the production costs downand spread to other markets than packaging products.

Strengths of our COMPAC research team:

» International collaboration of 3 universities and 12 industrial partners provide us with sufficient knowhow and material resources to succeed.

» Industry partners include players from raw material producers to end-users of packaging materials giving us knowledge on whole value chain.

» Review on best available natural fibre source

» Research on plasticization parameters of selected natural fibres

» Study of processing parameters and required modifications on existing reel-to-reel paper machines

Until recent years development of bio-basedmaterials has been outshadowed by bio-basedenergy development projects. However, thepolitical incentives have been developing to ourfavour, promoting a healthy base of companiesentering the markets with innovative productsand applications made from bio-basedmaterials.
