Even if the production of geothermal energy in Europe has grown in the last 10 years, geothermal energy contributed only 0.2% of total net production from renewable energy in the EU-28 countries.

At present, geothermal energy still has a low penetration in Spain’s energy balance, despite the importance of Spanish geothermal resources (Only 0.02 % of the energy consumption in Spain in 2010 was generated by geothermal energy).

Competitive low-carbon energy (LCE) Opportunities exist in the LCE category for shallow geothermal with a call for projects investigating vertical borehole drilling technologies.
For deep geothermal, a range of calls exist in the same category for 2014 and 2015; they concern
• new drilling technologies and concepts,
• the development of new geothermal technologies,
• the testing of EGS.

• Financing instrument managed jointly by the European Commission, European Investment Bank and Member States for subsidising installations of innovative renewable energy technology and carbon capture and storage (CCS).
• In December 2012, the European Commission awarded NER300 funds to the Geothermal South Hungarian Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) Demonstration Project.
• The Hungarian project is one of the 23 innovative renewable energy technology projects funded according to the outcome of the first call for proposals under the NER300 programme. Next call is foreseen in 2015.

• investment support (capital grants, tax exemptions or deductions on the purchase of goods)

• the Commission pointed out that the main support instrument in place in the EU is the feed-in tariff, i.e. a fixed and guaranteed price paid to the eligible producers of electricity from renewable energy sources

The new Cohesion Policy means regions and Member States must target EU investments on four key areas for economic growth and job creation:
• Research and Innovation
• Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)
• Enhancing the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
• Supporting the shift towards a low-carbon economy
At least 20% of total ERDF resources at national level has to be allocated in the field of renewable energies

Investments from the ERDF and the Cohesion Fund in the field of energy will include the following areas:

• Promoting smart energy systems
Total EU allocation of Cohesion Policy for Spain (2014-2020): 28,559.5 million euros
El EU Startup Accelerator es el primer acelerador basado en la Unión Europea en
Bruselas para Startups españolas. Su objetivo es dar apoyo a jóvenes españoles para
obtener financiación UE para sus proyectos, abrir sus startups al mercado europeo y
aprender las particularidades y características de la Unión Europea. EU Startup
Accelerator está subvencionado por el Ministerio de Empleo y Seguridad Social dentro
del proyecto de Jóvenes de la Dirección General de Migraciones.

ENERGY HYBRIDATION:
• The MINITURB project aims to introduce an innovative Mini-Hydro Turbine,
that inserted in a pipe or any other channeling system with a circulating fluid (air, gas, water, petrol, oil, …) is able to produce electricity, to meet energetic supply needs in several production areas, in particular farmer and irrigators cooperatives, in order to produce and optimize energy consumption, reducing waste and CO2 generation compared to other energetic sources.

• El Ayuntamiento de Soria ha convocado 2 becas destinadas a jóvenes emprendedores relacionados con el municipio que cuenten con proyectos de base tecnológica.
• Los emprendedores formarán parte del programa EU StartUp Accelerator desarrollado por la Fundación Finnovaregio en la ciudad de Bruselas y subvencionado por el Ministerio de Empleo y Seguridad Social.
