Professionalismisacorecompetencyofgraduatemedicaleducation.Skillsincludestrongcommunicationabilitiesandsensitivitytodiversepatientpopulations.Manyprogramslackwell-definedprofessionalismcurriculums.Theintensedemandsofclinicaltrainingcanresultinaninabilitytotreatthepatientasaperson.

Cinemaandliteraturearenoveltoolsthatcanevokeemotionsandpromotereflectivediscussionaboutpersonalbehavior,humaninteractionandculturalsensitivity.Engagedlearningoutcomesusingthesemethodshavenotbeenwidelystudied.Objective: Todeterminewhetherabook/movieclubwillimprovethefollowingengagedstudentlearningoutcomesamongphysicianlearners:- Communicationskills- Culturalsensitivity

BackgroundandObjective

Intervention:Neonatologyphysicianlearners(n=8)andfaculty(n=4)have

participatedin5of6book/movieclubs.Usingtheflippedclassroomideology,allparticipantsreviewedtheassignedbook/moviepriortotheevent.Eachclubconvenedoutsidethehospitalenvironmentandconsistedofamealfollowedbyaonehourdiscussion.Physicianlearnerscompletedapreandpostquestionnairereflectingonvariousdiscussiontopics.AssessmentandAnalysis:1)PatientandTeamCommunicationSkillsofPhysicianLearners- PreandpostquantitativeselfevaluationbasedonthemodifiedversionoftheAmericanBoardofInternalMedicinePatientAssessmentSurvey(Symonsetal.)andthe360DegreeEvaluationofResidents’InterpersonalandCommunicationQuestionnaire(Joshietal.)comparedtoacontrolpeergroup(n=15).-Preandpostquantitativeevaluationbynursingstaff(8-12staff/learner)usingthe360DegreeEvaluationofResidents’InterpersonalandCommunicationQuestionnaire(Joshietal).2)CulturalSensitivityofPhysicianLearners- PreandpostquantitativeselfevaluationbasedontheCulturalIntelligenceScale(VanDyne)comparedtoacontrolpeergroup(n=15)- Qualitativeanalysisofclubreflectivewritingsforcommonthemes.

PrejudicesandRacismCharactersacthatefullyinsomesituationsbutkindlyinothers.Whatdotheseincidentssayaboutpeopleandhumannature?

Ithinkitishumannaturetopassjudgmentbasedonwhatweseeandnotthepersoninside.Weseethishappeneverydayandit’sbecomethe“norm”unfortunatelyandIthinkit’ssomethingweallmustworkon.

OutcastsAsphysicians,canweavoidorrefusetotreatapatientbasedonourbeliefs,fearsorriskstoourownlife?

Idon’tthinkitisrighttorefusetotreatapatientbasedonbeliefs/race/etc.However,wedohavetotakecareofthesepatientssafelyforthemandforus.Butitseemsthereshouldalwaysbeawaytodothat.

IntegrityandCultureThereweremultipleopportunitiesforindividualstocomeforwardandpotentiallypreventharmtofuturepatients.Howdoyouthinkthe“culture”ofa professionorinstitutioninfluencesourpersonalintegrity?

Ideally,integrityshouldtrumpculture.Trueintegritywouldcauseyoutoignorecultureanddowhatisright.However,cultureisoftenthemostoppressingforce.

ThePatientPerspectiveAfterviewingthemovieanddiscussingVivian’sexperience,willyouchangeyourbehaviorwithpatientsmovingforward?

It’salwaysgoodtohavearemindertore-commityourselftoprovidegoodcare,andtothinkabouteveryinteraction,bigorsmall,asanopportunitytodobetter.

- Feedbackfrombothfacultyandphysicianlearnershasbeenverypositiveregardingtheoutsidehospitalsetting,timedemands,book/moviechoicesandthemesandsenseofcomraderyamongthephysicianlearnergroup.

- Currentplansaretocontinuethebook/movieclubaspartoftheUniversityofMichiganNeonatologyFellowshipprofessionaldevelopmentcurriculumforthe2017-2018year.

FutureDirections:-Itisanticipatedthatpost-clubdatacollectionandstatisticalanalysiswillbecompletebyJuneandAugust,2017,respectively.-FinalresultswillbesharedwiththePediatricandMedicalEducationCommunityviapublicationsandpresentationsatlocalandnationallevels.
