REGISTER NOW FOR THE 100TH INFANTRY BATTALION VETERANS
74TH ANNIVERSARY BANQUET by Beverly Shiroma
The 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans 74th
Anniversary Banquet will be held on Sunday, July 10
from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Pomaikai Ballrooms
at Dole Cannery in Iwilei. Everyone is welcome to
join us, you do not need to be a 100th member or
descendant of a 100th veteran to attend.
There is no charge for 100th Infantry Battalion
WWII veterans and their wives or widows to attend
the Banquet. For everyone else (including seniors and
children), the cost is $45 a person.
MENU
Lunch will be a sit down meal of one of the
following choices (no substitutions):
1) COMBINATION - Steamed mahimahi
oriental style with shiitake mushrooms, ginger,
cilantro, scallions and baby bok choy AND
macadamia nut crusted chicken with madeira sauce;
White rice; Steamed vegetables; Rolls and butter;
Coffee or tea.
2) VEGETARIAN - Tofu cakes; Grilled
vegetables; Brown rice musubi; Whole grain rolls
and butter; Coffee or tea.
HOSPITALITY HOUR
Our hospitality hour will run from 10:00 am until
11:00 am in the Ballroom Lobby area.
Check-in at the Registration Table will also begin
at 10:00 am for all guests and VIPs. This would be a
good time to get your parking ticket validated as there
will not be anyone at the Registration Table while the
Banquet is ongoing (you’ll have to wait for us to
contact someone from Dole who can validate your
ticket).
We are planning to take a group photo of the 100th
veterans attending the Banquet promptly at 10:30 am
so please be on time (or even early) if you are a
veteran or his “driver” for the day. Please listen for
the announcements as the time nears on where to line
up for the photo.
Several vendors including the Education Center
and the Descendants Chapter will be selling 100th
logo items and other merchandise in the Lobby.
The Ballroom doors will remain closed until 11:00
am when the Banquet officially begins. We would
like to have all 100th veterans individually introduced
before they enter the room so they should remain in
the Lobby outside the Banquet doors until they are
announced. If a veteran is in need of assistance to
enter the Ballroom, we ask that a family member also
remain by his side and walk in with him.
PROGRAM
Our theme for this year’s Banquet is “The
Enduring Legacy of the 100th Infantry Battalion” and
our program will focus on what the future holds for the
Club and the next generations of the 100th family.
By popular demand, our co-emcees will once again
be two young men who truly uphold all that the 100th
has come to represent, SSG Christopher Arakawa

VETERANS INVITED
100th veterans are invited as special guests to the ‘Iolani Summer School Fourth of July Parade and
Celebration on Friday, July 1 from 9:00 am. The 100th/442d Color Guard will lead the parade of students.
The school has asked a famous 100th descendant to be the Parade Grand Marshall but are waiting to hear
back from him. Veterans will not walk in the parade but will sit under a tent and watch the program which
lasts about an hour. Lunch for the veterans and soldiers will follow at the Clubhouse.
442nd RCT and MIS veterans are also invited. Veterans who attend the parade may bring their spouses
and descendants.
If you would like to participate, please contact Jayne at the Office at 946-0272 or e-mail
[email protected] by Friday, June 24.
BAKER CHAPTER NEWS
by Ann Kabasawa
Bakerites, we WILL have a Chapter meeting on
Saturday, June 4 at 1:00 pm at the Clubhouse. Thank
you for your patience and understanding regarding the
April and May meetings. We should be back on our
regular monthly schedule now that all of the
membership meetings have wrapped up.
I recently returned from Southern California
where I was in charge of a tour group for the annual
reunion of George Company, 442nd RCT. During my
trip, I attended the Service of Celebration and
Remembrance of Osamu Sam Fujikawa (Charlie
Co.) in Los Angeles. As Sam had been deeply
involved in the Nisei veteran community on the
Mainland, there were many familiar 100th faces in the
audience as well as participating in the service.
Tokuji Yoshihashi (Able Co.) represented the 100th
in presenting the floral tributes to Sam.
Also during the Reunion, we were treated to a
sneak preview of the Go For Broke National
Education Center’s Defining Courage . Although no
displays were up yet, we had a good idea of what it
will look like at the Grand Opening on May 28start to
finish.
“TORCH PATCH” FORM LETTER
In response to the article in last month’s PPP about the 100th/442d possibly losing the right to wear the “Torch Patch”, several members have asked if the Club could provide a form letter of support for them to refer to when writing their own letter. We will have one ready by June 10th so please contact the Office if you would like it e-mailed or mailed to you.
DOG CHAPTER NEWS
by Joy Teraoka
Harry Nakayama, our Doggie President,
will be on a trip to the Mainland, so there will
be no Dog Chapter meeting in June.
I hope all you members in good standing
sent in your ballots regarding the proposal to
enter into a long-term lease of the Club’s
property with ‘Iolani School for the purpose of
developing the property. It is an extremely
important decision we must make soon in order
to perpetuate our organization for many years to
come.
According to professional analysis, the
reality of surviving on our own, trying to
maintain our Clubhouse, our apartments, our
finances and our history for years to come
presents a rather stark and discouraging picture.
My own opinion is that partnering with
‘Iolani is a “gift offer” and a win-win situation
for both the 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans
and ‘Iolani School. Would any other
organization or company offer as much to help
us keep alive the 100th’s precious legacy?
HEADQUARTER CHAPTER NEWS
by Janice Sakoda
Have you been keeping up with Club 100’s
Long Range Planning Committee’s
recommendation? I hope so. To paraphrase
President Lloyd Kitaoka, being involved (by
attending meetings, raising questions, and
voting) shows you care about the future of the
Club. Thank you for making the effort to stay
informed and for voting.
I’m told the Anniversary Banquet
information is included in this Puka-Puka
Parade; please take a moment to complete the
Registration Form before it gets forgotten!
(I’m sure we all know how that goes!)
I recently had the opportunity to chat with
Ethel Teruya, widow of Wallace Teruya
(HQ). She hasn’t aged since I last saw her a
few years ago! She is still spry and youthful
looking, although she tells me she has her share
of aches and pain.
ABLE ANTICS by Beverly Shiroma
I would once again like to say “Doomo Arigatoo” to the
reservists of the 100th/442d who gave up yet another Sunday
on May 1st to do yardwork and clean the Clubhouse. The
crew gets bigger and bigger every month and has turned into
a family affair with the soldiers’ significant others and their
children brightening up the entire place. Mahalo to Gary
Hayakawa for being the head of hospitality and holding
down the fort as I had to leave early.
At the Informational Meeting for 100th members on May
7, Al Matsumoto (Able Co.) was the sole veteran in
attendance. Al is also the “last veteran standing” at the
Clubhouse as he still comes by every morning to fill two
coolers with ice as he has done for decades.
I hope everyone read the front page article on the new
Nisei Soldier/Congressional Gold Medal digital exhibit at the
Smithsonian’s Asian Pacific American Center website (http://
cgm.smithsonianapa.org/) and saw President Lloyd
Kitaoka’s interview about the exhibition on KITV news the
same day (photo of Lloyd with KITV reporter Paul Drewes).
Able Co. veteran and Medal of Honor awardee Sadao
Munemori is one of two 100th veterans featured on the
website (Sakae Takahashi of Baker Co. is the other).
Munemori’s profile begins with his birth in Los Angeles in
1922 and his family’s internment in Manzanar, where he was
selected to join the MIS language school but later transferred
to the 100th to avoid fighting in the Pacific. What I liked was
that his story didn’t end in 1945 when he was killed in action
in Italy during the Gothic Line Campaign but continued on
with the posthumous awarding of the Medal of Honor to him,
the impact of his passing on his family, and how he is still
remembered today around the world.

by Bert Hamakado
TURNER HALL THEATER
Thank you to everyone for being so understanding
when we had to cancel our Mothers Day Turner Hall
Theater event at the last minute to accommodate a
change in the Clubhouse schedule. I know a lot of
people were disappointed, especially those who had
already signed up, as they were looking forward to day
of Movie Magic!
The Descendants Chapter will be having a Fathers
Day themed Turner Hall Theater on Saturday, June
18 from 12:30 pm in Turner Hall at the Clubhouse.
The cost for a “ticket” is $10 which includes
admission to the movie, snacks, beverages and your
choice of three different bentos from Kokoro-Tei.
You must have a “ticket” to be admitted to the movie
so please complete the order form below and send it
with payment to the Clubhouse by Thursday, June 9.
Parking at Ala Wai School.
In honor of Fathers Day, we’ve asked Richard
Ching, a Japanese movie historian and a friend of Ann
Kabasawa, to pick a old-school samurai movie to get
us all in the bushido (warrior) spirit. We don’t have
the title as yet but Richard has mentioned he has one
in mind featuring some legendary handsome
heartthrobs to keep the mothers entertained and lots of
skillful swordplay for the fathers.
We would welcome any volunteers to help with
check in, set up, clean up and serving lunch that day
as well as donations of snacks and desserts. Please
contact the Office if you can help in any way or have
questions.
LOGO WEAR ON SALE
If you are looking for some last minute Fathers
Day gifts, we do have 100th polo shirts and t-shirts
still available for purchase. The polo shifts come in
mens and womens sizes (small to 2XL), in white or
blue, with or without pockets. We also have white t-
shirts with the 100th logo in various sizes, with or

Chapter activities like Turner Hall Theater.

Stay tuned for details as the date gets closer.
GREEN THUMB CLUB by Jan Sakoda
I would like to send a big MAHALO to Tetsuo Tateishi
(Company A) who offered cuttings of succulents and other plants
to members of the Green Thumb in response to my previous article
in the Puka-Puka Parade asking for donations. (I thought I had
sent out an email to the Green Thumb members with this offer but
just checked my email and I can’t find it. Yikes! Please email me
if you’re interested in getting clippings of succulents from Mr.
Tateishi and I’ll pass on his phone number to you.) I had the
pleasure of putting Ken Akinaka in touch with Mr. Tateishi. Mr
Tateishi knew Ken’s dad and wanted to tell Ken about his dad’s
kindness while they both were in Italy. It is always special when
I’m able to talk to a veteran, and even more special when the
veteran can tell stories about my dad or a friend’s dad.
There will be no Green Thumb Club in June (I’m taking a class
on caring for roses) and in July (I’ll be on vacation). The next
Green Thumb meeting will be an excursion to the Annual
Halawa Xeriscape Garden Open House and Unthirsty Plant
Sale on Saturday, August 6. If you are interested in going, please
email Arlene Sato at [email protected].
The Body, Mind, Soul Club, has several activities coming up
and I encourage you to sign up for these fun and informative
classes. So far, I’ve taken classes on making shio koji and miso,
soap making, perma probes, kombucha, and bacon! Looking
forward to learning more! Thanks, Jan Nadamoto, for working
hard to coordinate these classes.
If you’re interested in being included in our email group, please
let me know ([email protected]) Dates and times may
change so please email me if you’re interested so we can keep you
updated of any last minute changes.
LAS VEGAS MINI-REUNION by Ann Kabasawa

possible. Registration forms and information is
available in the Lounge or contact me at 781-8540

the Mainland and need help with travel plans, contact me and I can
help you with that too.

LOVE YOU ALL, MY 100TH/442D NINJAS!!!!
When I got in to work on May 19, SSG
Chris Makinano of the 100th/442d was
waiting outside for me. He said he was
going to help CPL Dason Zheng move to a
new home but his car had died and had to be
towed. He very reluctantly asked if he could
borrow my car and I handed him my keys, warning him
that my car was a mess inside and I had less than a
quarter tank of gas. I told him I had another cleaner car at
home with a full tank of gas that he could use as long as
he wanted that but he said my car was okay.
Several hours later, SSG Makinano returned and
asked me if I could step outside because there was a
problem with my car that happened while he was driving.
I went out and was shocked to see that my car was
sparkling and shining like brand new! Everything that
was broken had been repaired plus the exterior and
interior had been spotlessly detailed. The whole story
about moving was a white lie told so the soldiers could
take my car away. I took me an hour to stop crying over
what they did for me and I still tear up now.
I would like to give 100 major mahalos and 100 big
hugs to all of the soldiers of the 100th/442d who chipped
in money, time and talent to fix my car. You all put a
smile on my face that I am sure will stay there until you
youngsters are in your 90s and 100s like my WWII boys.
Special thanks to CSM Beau Tatsumura (my brother
from another mother), SSG Makinano (incredibly
talented actor) and CPL Zheng (project coordinator no.
1) for being the Ninja Team who put the plan together.

PARADE ADDENDUM VETERANS WANTED TO ATTEND THE
MILILANI MIDDLE SCHOOL
PEACE CEREMONY
The faculty and students of Mililani Middle
School have once again invited our WWII Japanese
American veterans to attend their annual Peace
Ceremony and Luncheon on Friday, June 17, 2016
from 8:45 am to 11:00 am at their school’s Peace
Garden and Cafeteria.
Veterans will be invited guests and are not
expected to give a speech or presentation, although
individual students may want to talk to them or ask
them questions. While they are hoping to have
veterans from the 100th attend, veterans from the
442nd, MIS and 1399th are also welcome.
The teachers and staff will provide round-trip
transportation to any veteran from home and back if
needed.
The Peace Garden project began in 2000 as part of
the students’ curriculum on WWII. Students and
several 100th veterans painted rocks with symbols
reflecting their thoughts of peace. The 100th has been
invited to attend the Peace Ceremony every year and
we have also hosted the students at the Clubhouse on
occasion (.
If you are a 100th, 442nd, MIS or 1399th veteran
who would like to attend, please contact Jayne at the
Office at 946-0272 or e-mail [email protected]
and we will put you in touch with Ms. Keri Coloma
who is the teacher in charge of the event.
