ALL-TIME VS OPPONENTSERIES RECORD:OVERALL: 2-6-0 LAST MEETING:REAL MONARCHS 3, NEW MEXICO 2; JUNE 30, 2021
Real Monarchs (2-5-4, 10 points) defeated New Mexico United 3-2 at Zions Bank Stadium in dramatic come-from-behind fashion to earn the team’s second-ever win against the formidable opponent.
New Mexico took the early lead in the 15th minute with a goal from Bruce and then doubled the lead just ten minutes later. The Monarchs cut the lead in half in the 38th minute with a long-dis-tance goal from Portillo, giving the home side something to build on heading into the second half.
In the 54th minute, Briggs volleyed home the equalizing goal from inside the box on a low-crossing pass from Douglas Martínez. With momentum on the home team’s side, Powder rocketed the game-winning shot from well outside the box to give the Monarchs the lead in the 65th minute and the Monarchs finished the night with all three points in hand.
LAST TIME VS OPPONENT
Real Monarchs (4-15-4, 16 points) fell 2-0 to Eastern Conference foe, Hartford Athletic, at Dillon Stadium. James Moberg made his 100th appearance for the Real Monarchs as a substitute in the 82nd minute, meanwhile Yekeson Subah made his club debut.
Hartford Athletic opened the scoring in the 30th minute with a goal from Juan Carlos Obregon Jr. to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Danny Barrera pushed a through ball into the box and Obregon Jr. beat his defender to the pass before firing the ball into the back of the net. In the 43rd minute, Hartford sent a high-crossing ball into the box that bounced off two attacking players before Ibrahim Bancé rescued the Monarchs and headed the ball out for a corner. On the ensuing corner, Jeff Dewsnup made a diving save on a headed shot aimed at the top right corner to keep the Monarchs within striking distance, as the home side took the 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.
The Monarchs looked to equalize after winning a foul in the 70th minute. Forward Max Mata restarted play quickly and found Daniel Flores making a run down the left-side of the pitch. Flores sent a blistering ball into the box that zipped across the face of goal, but the Monarchs were unable to get anything on it and the scoreline remained the same. In the 83rd minute off of a Hartford Athletic set piece, Luka Prpa looped a ball into the box that redirected off of a defender and snuck inside the near post to extend the host’s lead and give Hartford the 2-0 win.
SEASON STORYLINESYoungest Signings in Club HistoryThe Real Monarchs will be featuring two of the youngest sign-ings in club history in its seventh season1. In January, Real Salt Lake signed RSL Academy product and Herriman City native Jeff Dewsnup. At 16-years-old the goalkeeper became the youngest signing in RSL history and the first-ever Herri-man City native to sign for the club. The Monarchs then made 15-year-old Julio Benitez its youngest-ever signing when he signed with the team in march. The midfielder was also an RSL Academy stand-out. Welcome in the KiwisIn back-to-back months during the offseason the Monarchs signed the team’s first-ever players from New Zealand. The first was 20-year-old forward Max Mata who arrived from Switzer-land where he spent time with the second tier of Grasshopper, scoring five goals in 10 matches. The second was 24-year-old Kyle Adams from the Houston Dynamo FC where he appeared in 61 matches for Houston’s USL Championship affiliate, Rio Grande Valley FC. Columbian TrioAs the Monarchs continued to revamp its roster this offseason, the team signed three young players from Columbia. 21-year-old defender Kevin Saucedo signed with the Monarchs after
spending the 2020 season with Colombian Categoria Primera A side Millonarios F.C. He represented Columbia in the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup. In January, the Monarchs signed its second Columbian of the offseason in Brayan Gomez. The 21-year-old midfielder played for CDC Atletico Nacional at the U-20 level in Columbia. Internationally, Gomez represented Columbia in the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup alongside his Real Monarchs teammate Juan Vidal. 20-year-old Vidal is the third Columbian on the roster this season who joins the club from CF Barranquilla. Real Monarchs 2.02021 marks the beginning of the Real Monarchs 2.0, a new blueprint set by the front office to optimize the roster and promote opportunity and growth within the club. The Monarchs are shifting focus to signing promising young internationals and promoting heavily from the RSL Academy. With eight new international signings joining James Moberg, Sam Brown and Jimmy Slayton, there are now a lot of roster spots available for Academy products to see the pitch and make an impact. Head-lined by Benitez, Academy youngsters are expected to make up almost a third of the roster this season.
