If a student went to the nurse yesterday because of a stomachache and is not in school today, we can infer that our classmate is home sick. Making inferences as we read is a lot like making inferences in life.
Good readers ask themselves: What is the author telling me here that is not directly stated and goes beyond the facts I read?

After reading the first sentence I began to understand that drums have been used for a very long time and were important enough to be included in a painting.
I also remember when I looked at the chart on page 6 of the different types of drums. I can infer that the woman on page 10 is holding a different type of drum. It is flat and was beat with one hand.

When I read on, I came across a word I looked up in the glossary earlier: sacred. Knowing what this word means, along with the fact that the Egyptians used drums to honor their gods, I can infer that drums are not just for entertainment. The drums are part of serious ceremonies, too.
Reading that priestesses played the drums, I can infer that some women had a valued role in Egyptian society.

In the second paragraph, I realized that the white settlers were confused by the Algonquian language. The author doesn't say it, he implies it.
The white settlers started calling all gatherings powwows. They did not understand that pauwau and pau were for medicine man and religious ceremonies. I can infer that the settlers did not understand the differences. By making these inferences, I can better understand how people can wrongly interpret what they see other people do.

Talk (and infer) TogetherListen as I read pages 11 and 12.
Think about facts the author provides related to the importance of drums and drumming in Native American Indians lives.
*How do the facts about native American drums and how they are viewed help you to infer how drums are treated by Native Americans?
*Using the description of drumming at a powwow, what can you infer about what happens when the drumming starts?
*Are powwows happy events? What facts did the author include that support your evidence?

Read pages 6870 and create your own chart.
• Why is the spine important to the body? (What facts from the first paragraph on page 68 support your answer?)
• What would happen if human beings did not have ball and socket joints? (What stated facts support your inference?)
• What would life be like without opposable thumbs? (What tasks do opposable thumbs allow us to do?)
