PROBLEMS
• Protocol
No common, Standard / open protocol
is available in the energy meters available nor themeters which are being purchased.
Standard Protocol :-
• PACT (Multi dropping not possible)
Open Protocol :-• Modbus ( Values are integers have to use
multiplying factor at software end)
• IEC 101 (No known meter available)

PROBLEMS
• Communication Port
No common type of port is available in the
energy meters available nor the meters which arebeing purchased.
The mixture of Optical, RS-232 and RS-485 isavailable and none has the record of the ports.
Recommended :-
RS-232 for the meters installed individually
RS-485 for the meters installed in groups(Substation, Group Metering)

PROBLEMS
• Existing Meters
As these meters vary in technologies, makes,
Protocols, communication ports, etc. which createsa difficult situation for AMR implementation teams.
Recommended :-
Request the manufacturer to take back old metersand replace with new ones, as in many a cases it is
only firmware up-gradation or minor modification.

PROBLEMS
• Technology
As these meters vary in technologies, makes,
protocols, communication ports, etc. which createsa difficult situation for AMR implementation teams.
Recommended :-
Request the reshuffle / change energy meters tocreate the situation for the AMR supplier to opt. one
technology / methodology for the system.
Example : Change all substation meters with theones having RS-485 port & Modbus protocol.

PROBLEMS
• Implementation Time
As these meters vary in technologies, makes,
protocols, communication ports, Multiplying factorsetc. which creates a difficult situation for AMRimplementation teams.
Recommended :-
Request the reshuffle / change energy meters to
create the situation for the AMR supplier to opt. onetechnology / methodology for the system.
This will reduce the AMR implementation timedrastically.
