DENTISTRY / DEFINED
It is the health science that encompasses the:
1. Study and application of measures designed to prevent the deterioration of oral structures and
2. Use of pertinent clinical procedures to improve the oral health of those treated.

DENTISTRY / FUNCTIONS OF DENTAL PRACTICE
1. Research2. Educational efforts3. Preventive efforts and4. Clinical efforts
So that an ever increasing number of people can avoid the loss of teeth.

DENTISTRY / PATIENT’S ROLE IN PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY
If the patient begins coming to the dentist early in life and is convinced of the dividends to be earned from a policy of :
1. Preventive therapy2. Correct oral hygiene and 3. Prompt repair of the tooth when a
carious lesion has penetrated the enamel,
there should be little need later for major restorative operations.
![Page 9: Prosto 1 chapter 1](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554b40ecb4c905ff268b4bea/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
DENTISTRY / DUTY OF THE DENTIST
If a tooth must be lost, it is the duty of the dentist to ---
inform the patient that the space should be filled after surgery (as soon as healing and shaping of the ridge tissue are complete).
The significance of keeping the arches intact must be stressed…
WHY?
![Page 10: Prosto 1 chapter 1](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554b40ecb4c905ff268b4bea/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
DENTISTRY / DUTY OF THE DENTIST
The loss of one tooth can effect changes in:
1. Position of the teeth and
2. contact relationships of all teeth remaining in the mouth.
![Page 11: Prosto 1 chapter 1](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554b40ecb4c905ff268b4bea/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
DENTISTRY / DUTY OF THE DENTIST

CHARACTERISTICS OF AN IDEAL PROSTHESIS
1. Contribute to mastication,2. It should augment the ability of the
patient to enunciate,3. It should restore and preserve contacts
between the abutments and the approximating teeth and also all other teeth in the arch, and
4. It should maintain the positions of the opposing teeth and the health of the supporting structures.
![Page 13: Prosto 1 chapter 1](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554b40ecb4c905ff268b4bea/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)

An artificial replacement that restores missing tooth structure by
surrounding most or all of the remaining structure with a material such as 1. cast metal, 2. porcelain, or 3. a combination of materials such as metal and porcelain.
It is intended to reproduce 1. both the form and the function of the tooth
and, 2. in some instances, to restore and enhance
the appearance.

DEFINITION OF TERMS FIXED PROSTHESIS / FIXED BRIDGE
Non removable prosthesis that is - rigidly attached to one or more abutment* teeth *(It is the natural tooth or teeth usually two or more, that supports
the prosthesis and to which it is attached.)
- To replace missing tooth structure- To replace one or more lost or missing teeth.
The term fixed partial denture is sometimes used.

Is the restoration, usually a crown, rebuilding the prepared abutment tooth, by which the bridge is attached to the abutment and to which the pontic is connected.
![Page 28: Prosto 1 chapter 1](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554b40ecb4c905ff268b4bea/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)

Is the part of fixed prosthesis that unites the retainer with the pontic or that joins the individual units of the prosthesis.
It may be rigid, as are both the cast and soldered joint, or non rigid as is the dovetail joint.
