This weekend we celebrate the most precious and life giving Holy Cross. It is a day we commemorate the finding of the True Cross of Christ but St. Helen. There is a statue in St. Cecilia of St. Helena holding a cross that reminds us how beautiful this feast day really is to all of us. We commemorate the Cross that Jesus died upon and that he opened the doors of heaven.Through his great suffering and crucifixion, he was nailed to the Cross to free us from sin.

In our region we also have a 40 Hour Devotion this weekend to devote the 40 hours of continuous prayer before the Blessed Sac-rament. As we gaze upon the cross we see the great sacrifice and suffering Our Lord has made for us. Although we prayed for these 40 hours, please know that throughout our region we have adoration and a Holy Hour at each of the parishes. Take time to spend an hour with God in silent prayer during the solemn exposition. SMSJ- Every Tues. 7:00 PM, St. Cecilia- Every Wed. 7:00 PM, St. Anthony- Every Thurs. 7:00 PM.

3 | CONGRATULATIONS! Brad and Peggy Budde celebrated the sacrament of marriage on Sat., Aug. 29!

4 | WEDDINGS AT ST. CECILIA. Because of the Corona Virus this year, we had a lot of couples who had to reschedule their weddings from April-June to our fall months. This fall we will have some weekends with up to 2-3 weddings a weekend. Please be patient with us as we will be very busy presiding over their ceremo-nies and keeping track of everything! Please pray for our couples as they are having ceremonies that are a little different this year.

5 | FIRST MOM’S NIGHT! We are so blessed here at St Cecilia to have many vibrant ministries, including our very active Mom’s Group. We kicked off the year with our first meeting, a social in the Mom’s House. This year, we will be doing a study on the saints, starting with St Edith Stein and ending with the female Doctors of the Church & St Hildegard. If you are interested in joining us, please see Sarah Rose Bort’s information on the front page!

6 | COOKING WITH FAMILY! A great way to have your children learn about the saints or a fun way to celebrate with your family is through eating! Next weekend we celebrate the feast of Padre Pio. On the Catholic Cuisine page they give a little explanation about the saint and a delicious recipe to celebrate his feast day. I’m going to try and make it myself. I’ll let you know how it turns out! https://catholiccuisine.blogspot.com/2008/09/feast-of-padre-pio-italian-sausage-and.html

FAMILY OF FAITHFamily of Faith will be the ordinary means of religious education for ALL children and parents in each parish of our Eastside Pastoral Region. It is a complete replacement for PREP (Parish Religious Education Program) and is the new avenue in which all children in the region, regardless of their parish or if they attend Catholic grade school or not, will prepare for the sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation.

• Session 1 begins this Sun., Sept. 13, from 11:30 AM-12:30 PM.• Sessions on the second Sunday of each month from Sept.–May.

To register, please go to our www.eastsidefaith.org/fof and fill out the online registration form. If your child is receiving a sac-rament, you must provide a copy of their baptismal certificate.

CATECHESIS (kat’i-ke’sis) n.Can we help the departed who are in the condition of purgatory?Yes, since all those who are baptized into Christ form one com-munion and are united with one another, the living can also help the souls of the faithful departed in purgatory. [1032, 1414]

When a man is dead, he can do nothing more for himself. The time of active probation is past. But we can do something for the faithful departed in purgatory. Our love extends into the afterlife. Through our fasting, prayers, and good works, but especially through the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, we can obtain grace for the departed. (YOUCAT question 160)

KNOW YOUR SAINTSSt. Joseph of Cupertino (1603-1663)Joseph is most famous for levitat-ing at prayer.

Already as a child, Joseph showed a fondness for prayer. After a short career with the Ca-puchins, he joined the Conventu-als. Following a brief assignment caring for the friary mule, Joseph

began his studies for the priesthood. Though studies were very dif-ficult for him, Joseph gained a great deal of knowledge from prayer. He was ordained in 1628.

Joseph’s tendency to levitate during prayer was sometimes a cross; some people came to see this much as they might have gone to a circus sideshow. Joseph’s gift led him to be humble, patient and obedient, even though at times he was greatly tempted and felt for-saken by God. He fasted and wore iron chains for much of his life.

The friars transferred Joseph several times for his own good and for the good of the rest of the community. He was reported to and investigated by the Inquisition; the examiners exonerated him.

Joseph was canonized in 1767. In the investigation preceding the canonization, 70 incidents of levitation are recorded.

Fall Bible Study: Peter – Cornerstone of CatholicismA 10-week study featuring Dr. Tim GrayTwo sections available:• Beginning Monday, September 14, at 7 PM at St. Cecilia (Commons) and Tuesday, September 15, at 12:30 PM at St. Margaret-St. John (Rectory) | Material Cost: $25The character of St. Peter is both inspiring and confounding to many of us. How could a stubborn and impulsive fisherman become the “rock” upon which Jesus would build his Church? Bringing together biblical accounts, historical evidence, Church teaching, classical art, and personal insights, Dr. Tim Gray gives a fresh perspective on Simon Peter that is immediately informative and relevant to our lives. After all, if Jesus could bring out the very best in someone like Peter, then there is hope for the rest of us.

In these ten stirring lectures, learn what happens when flawed humanity comes up against God made flesh.

To register, visit the regional website, www.eastsidefaith.org/peter and fill out the digital registration form at the bot-tom of the page. Direct all questions to our DRE, Cody Egner.

Surviving Divorce: Hope & Healing for the Catholic Family12-week series featuring Rose Sweet starting September 8• Tuesdays from 7 PM – 8:30 PM at St. Cecilia School • Material Cost: FREE!Marriage is meant to last a lifetime. Most engaged couples approach their wedding days fully believing and intending this. Sadly, however, too many hearts and homes end up experienc-ing the pain of divorce. Surviving Divorce was created to bring hope and healing to those who have experienced the pain and loneliness of a broken marriage.

To register, visit the regional website, www.eastsidefaith.org/surviving-divorce and fill out the digital registration form at the bottom of the page. Direct all questions to Stephanie Ramsey, [email protected].

This month, as we continue to follow the Archbishop’s call to “Radiate Christ,” we turn to the power of silence. In particular, we ask ourselves, “are there periods of silence in my day in which I can draw closer to God?” Let’s examine why silence is critical to our lives as followers of Jesus.

Silence plays an important role not only in the liturgical life of the Church but also in our personal lives. So much so that I think we should treat silence almost like any other sacramental, like the Rosary, like Holy Water, like the scapular…something we use every day which incites us to holiness. But it is also much more than that.

One of my watchwords the last couple of years comes from Cardinal Robert Sarah’s great book, The Power of Silence, “Man must make a choice, God or nothing, silence or noise.” It is a simple sentence, but contains tremendous wisdom. We Christians must acknowledge that our whole life is based upon a choice. Fol-low God or follow nothing. Foster silence or permit noise. Sarah reminds us that we can’t have it both ways. We know this in our hearts, even as we struggle against and strive to detach ourselves from the things that pull us away from what we are called to be.

Cardinal Sarah tells us why we have such trouble being silent. “The world no longer hears God because it is constantly speak-ing, at a devastating pace, in order to say nothing.” He goes on to describe this world of fabricated stories, impure images, harsh sounds, all of which wound our ability to hear God speaking.

It’s like trying to take a sip of water from a firehose. It is like trying to hear a whisper through a windstorm (ref: 1 Kings 19:12).

Holy Scripture is full of admonitions to silence. Knowing when to speak and when to listen. Sitting still in God’s presence and waiting for him. Jesus gave us this example every time he went off alone, early in the morning or late at night, to pray to His Father. I’m sure most of us would like to find time for this, and regret that we often forget to make it so. Some days, I move between tasks or activities at such a pace that I feel very accom-plished, I’m taking care of business! But what am I really doing by checking all of those boxes? Am I simply doing the work that happens to lay in front of me? Have I let God participate in set-ting my tasks before me?

How can I know unless I actually invite Him into every sin-gle day? This reminds me of St. Edith Stein, “Let go of your plans. The first hour of your morning belongs to God. Tackle the day’s work that He charges you with.”

Silence forces us to recon with who we are, and what we are called to do. To help us with this reconciliation, let’s consider taking on two challenges this month.

First, come to adoration. If you have never tried it, please take this as a personal invitation to something that can change your life. Our Lord makes Himself available to us in the Blessed Sacrament and He takes these intimate moments very serious-ly. This month, St. Cecilia offers 40 Hours Devotion between September 11 and 13. This is the perfect time to spend a silent 10 minutes or several hours with Our Lord. Cardinal Sarah reminds us of how adoration affected one of our most familiar contempo-rary saints, “Mother Teresa had a face charred by God’s silences, but she bore within her and breathed love. By dint of remaining long hours before the burning flame of the Blessed Sacrament, her face was tanned, transformed by a daily face-to-face encoun-ter with the Lord.”

Second, start adding moments of silence to our daily routine, even beyond our typical prayer routine. Silence can be jarring! When you truly turn off every source of noise, remove every book from your hand, close every door, and sit in total si-lence it can even be discomfiting at first. We are simply not used to it. It forces us to recon with the fact that we are not in con-trol, and that the world continues to turn around us even as we remove ourselves from time and encounter God in our hearts. Cardinal Sarah again, “There is no place on earth where God is more present than the human heart. This heart is truly God’s abode, the temple of silence. The Father waits for his children in their own hearts.”

We try it at home, even with small children, for a minute at a time. Sometimes we are interrupted by bursts of laughter or a silly face here and there, but many times we actually accomplish a full 30 or 60 seconds of utter silence. And then we want more.

Start small. Turn off the radio on one part of your daily commute. Keep the TV off, especially if it is just on for back-ground noise. Put the phone somewhere near the door and leave it there for a while. Ask your family or friends to join you in a moment each day where you say nothing at all. Turn off the firehose. Turn off the wind. Allow God to whisper directly to your heart.
