Did you watch the David Attenborough documentary, "Climate change - the facts", shown on BBC on 18th April. If not it is well worth a watch. It was a stark reminder,
even a warning.
Our world is suffering and we must change the way we live. Why? To reduce the ef-fects of climate change which are already seen in terms of rising sea levels, extreme
storms /flooding, severe droughts.
Attenborough's documentary linked togeth-er many actual facts with climate change caused by global temperature rise due to CO2 levels rising, mainly due to the use of
fossil fuels:
We can no longer ignore the facts.
School children have been on strike across the world recently to share the same
urgency.
It is a challenge for each of us- can we really say, "It is not true" or " I can do
nothing", or " It is the fault of another country"?
We can encourage our MP, our councillors, to take action, and influence
government policies - indeed.
But also each of us can do something now ....................
Attenborough suggested: eating local food, (fewer transport miles), insulating our houses, eating less meat (beef production particularly has a high energy and greenhouse gas load). Walk more, rather than drive the car to the local shop. Plant
trees - which soak up CO2. Simple ideas. More can be found at:
https://householdquotes.co.uk/lower-your-carbon-footprint/
Psalm 24 vs 1 says, "The earth is the Lord's and everything that is in it" . God cares and our God has given us a responsibility to care for the world. At the beginning of
the bible, Genesis chapter 2 vs 15, God says to us, "Till the soil, and take care of it".
The picture above shows caring hands surrounding our planet- can we care for our
planet? It is our responsibility, we can all do something.
Stephen Burgess, Lay minister

year of the Lenten lunches – next year will be a special one
so look out for notices.
Doynton & Wick WI: At the April meeting, John Hoyland told
the story of the Friendly Societies – the forerunner of today’s
welfare state. The Friendly Societies were set up by working
people, who paid a small monthly subscription in return for
sick pay, medical care and pensions in times of need. They
also fulfilled a valuable social function, with monthly meetings
(often in the local pub) and an annual “walking day” – a holiday on
which members paraded around the village carrying their
distinctive brass emblems.

News from St Bartholomew’s
Well, Easter has come and gone, with its message of hope and new life, and here at St Bartholomew’s we had a marvellous celebration! The church looked amazing, with flowers on absolutely every flat surface (well done to Monica and her team) and Easter lambs dotted about the place. The vicar had to go and have a lie down with half a Junior Disprin after his marathon efforts - we are very grateful for his energy and enthusiasm, especially as it coincided with a very sad time for him and his family.
I think there may be evidence of a Divine sense of humour, as Storm Hannah was VERY apparent on our chosen “Planting Day” in the churchyard! However, there were three of us and my very grateful thanks go to Anne and Lenny who planted and strimmed with gusto. We now have Ragged Robin, Lady’s Bedstraw, Musk Mallow, Wild Carrot
etc in our wildflower patch, lots more English Bluebells, and some Hellebores, Red Campion and Foxgloves in the shadier areas. Many thanks to the anonymous donor of an enormous bag of snowdrops - they have been distributed around the churchyard, so fingers crossed for a lovely display next year. Who knows, we may even be able to rival Abson one day! Talking of strimming - we are sad to report that someone thought it would be a good idea to force the wooden cover of the window to the boiler room at the back of church and help themselves to our petrol-driven strimmer. There was much consternation and “Have you seen the strimmer?” type questions until we looked a little closer and realised what had happened. This is a blow, as the sort of strimmer that we need to keep the churchyard under any type of control is not cheap, and we will need to dig deep to replace it. In the meantime, if anyone feels that they could come and do an hour’s voluntary strimming, like Lenny, we would be very grateful. You will easily see where you are needed! It will soon be Ascension Day, so more celebrating! I love this time of year...

Wick Sports Ground Vacant Secretary role – Our voluntary committee are seeking a new secre-tary to help with our meetings that run every two months. We meet for an hour at the Sports field, where alongside normal secretary duties, the per-son would form part of the committee which determines how the sports ground is run and developed. Over the last 2 years the committee with the help of the Wick Parish Council and Malcolm Watson have made vast im-provements to the facilities and continue to apply for further grants to continue the good work. We are a friendly group and would welcome any-one what every age. If interested, please contact Treasurer Matt Davis on 07977510352.
Multi-Use-Games-Area Re-surfacing Grant Applications – WSG after another rejection from Sport England for additional funding to resurface MUGA with 3/4G, are determined to keep applying so we can provide a safe playing surface for five-a-side football, rugby training and other fitness activities. Our latest grant applications have been submitted into WofE Ru-ral Development Programme and the Enovert Community Trust and we are expected to hear in late May/early June. WSG feel this is their number one priority as currently the MUGA is not being used to it’s full potential.
Architect Help Needed – We are looking for some expert help with a few developments at the club and was hoping that someone in the village may be available to help. If so, please contact Matt on the above number.

Wick Football Club
End of Season Overview
As the season ends it is time to reflect on what has been and hopefully to look for-ward to what is to come. Having lost our 'A' team at the end of last season, we acknowledged that the club was in a transitional period. Our hope was that the first team would consolidate their position in the County League, and I am glad to say that this has been accomplished, so many thanks to Mike Strawford, James Pocock, Shaun Morris, Nigel White and the players who have done the club proud this sea-son with a top six finish, a two-place improvement on last season. They finish their season on Bank Holiday Monday 22/04, with a home game against Henbury, 3pm KO.
The reserves are still in a state of flux and with a stop/start season due to fixture clashes with the first team, we are thankful to Mark Cousins, John Gaylard and Kev Ashwood for working hard to keep team spirit up through some difficult times, and a big thanks to those players that have supported them. Our links with Larkhall youth has paid dividends and we expect to restart our 'A' next season with a youthful core. They are planning their first friendly against Hanham Abbotts on Tuesday 23/04 at Wick FC, KO 6:30pm.
The vets continue to go from strength to strength. The over 35s remain undefeated this season and the Over 45’s having lost just one game, which is a great achievement for Matt Davis and his players. Both teams have not mathematically won their leagues as yet but need a point from their remaining games to be crowned champions. The Over 35’s could go one better and complete the double if they win the Harry Mottram Cup final on the 05/05 at Cribbs FC.
The club would not function without the tireless work of its committee and helpers so a big thank you must go to them who make Wick a great place to be and play. The work starts now to prepare for next season so I wish each Wick team the very best.
Thanks to all sponsors – Wick FC would like to thank to all the local companies, businesses and fans that support the club in sponsorship. Without their help it would be impossible to push our club forward. Sadly, space constraints mean we can’t name them individually, but we are enormously grateful.

We are glad that our Minister Reverend James Jang is back with us His wife, Sarah, is feeling better but not able to return home yet. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, as they are with all our fellowship.

Wendy Haines writes:
Our March meeting was very interesting: our speaker, Dawn Lawrence, decided to became a poet after Virgina McKenna set up “The Born Free Foundation” Dawn was inspired by poetry at a young age, and was very passionate about endangered animals behaviour. Dawn has successfully written five books, and she also has illustrated all her poems in her books.
Wick Village WI generally meet in Wick Village Hall but because of the
EUROPEAN ELECTIONS this month, the WI Meeting will be held at the Church Room in Wick 7.30pm. (NB If the elections are cancelled we will be at Wick Village Hall 7.30pm as usual.)
The meeting will begin with our Resolutions. Our speaker will be Tina Symmons, a nurse who will teach us basic First Aid. So if you would like to join our meeting you will be warmly welcomed.

2. Provide support to people aged 18 and over to assist with the purchase of tools, clothing or other relevant expenses incurred in support of further studies, training or work-based learning (such as text books, field trips or equipment).

Dyrham & Hinton Diversions
We now have our own website dyrhamandhintonwi.co.uk.
“Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme” was the opening slide from our speaker in April, Jutta Blumenthal, a master medical herbalist; her title for the evening was Herbal Remedies from your Garden. The talk was aimed to get members to use common garden herbs for health and simple herbal remedies. We learnt how to use herbs in our everyday life e.g. that Rosemary is good for a bad memory, something very helpful in our busy lives!
Our next meeting on Thursday May 9th is a resolutions evening accompanied by wine, cheese and a quiz.
Thursday 13th June is our trip to the Lavender farm including a ploughman's supper! Numbers are limited so get in early if you want to come.
Our Skittles team sadly lost their last match after a valiant fight and getting through to the 4th round – well done ladies!
The next Bull Books meeting will be at the Bull on the Thursday 16th May at 7pm (for members only).
Reminder date for your diary: Dyrham & Hinton Revel 28th and 29th June (see attached poster for details).
Volunteers are needed for the Revel Fete on Saturday 29th June including additions to our removals team to transport equipment to and from the Village Hall. Contact Chris Grose ([email protected]) if you can help.
