Course Description This course gives students a solid foundation in the fundamentals of black and white photography. Students will learn to use a 35mm camera, develop film and print photographs. In addition, students will learn the basics of digital photography, taking digital photos and doing basic editing in Adobe Photoshop. Through technical skill building and creative problem solving, students will learn how to use the elements and principles of composition to create meaningful images. The emphasis will be on the process of creative exploration and experimentation. In addition to the technical learning and creative expression involved in this course, students will also learn about the history of photography, its development and its many and varied purposes and forms. Students will also learn to analyze, interpret and evaluate their photographs and those of other photographers. Resources Basic materials including photographic paper, film and chemistry are provided.

Overall Expectations

Expectations are organized into three strands: Creating and Presenting, Reflecting, Responding and Analysing, and Foundations. A. Creating and Presenting

The Creative Process: use the creative process to create a variety of photographs, individually and/or collaboratively.

The Elements and Principles of Design: use the elements and principles of design to create photographs for the purpose of self-expression and to communicate ideas, information and/or messages.

Production and Presentation: produce photographs using both analog and digital technologies and techniques, and demonstrate an understanding of a variety of ways of presenting their works and the works of others.

B. Reflecting, Responding and Analysing

The Critical Analysis Process: use the critical analysis process to examine, interpret, evaluate and reflect on various photo-based images.

Art, Society and Values: demonstrate an understanding of how photo-based images reflect the society in which they were created and of how they can affect personal and societal values.

Connections Beyond the Classroom: identify types of knowledge and skills they have developed in photography and ways in which they can apply this learning in work and career contexts.

C. Foundations

Terminology: demonstrate an understanding of and use correct terminology when referring to elements and principles, and other components and techniques in photography.

Conventions and Techniques: demonstrate an understanding of the conventions and techniques used in photo-based media and its history in the context of societal change.

Responsible Practices: demonstrate an understanding of responsible practices related to photography, particularly the use of cameras (both analog and digital), the darkroom and computer lab..

Course Evaluation Learning Skills Students will be assessed on the following Six Learning Skills; Responsibility, Organization, Independent Work, Collaboration, Initiative, Self-Regulation Teaching/Assessment and Evaluation Strategies A range of instructional strategies will be used to address student needs. Some of these strategies include direct instruction, interactive instruction, experiential learning and independent study. Students are given opportunities to learn through assessment before evaluations. Summative evaluation for this course is based on an in class culminating assignment. Achievement Chart

Communication – C (30%) Assessment/Evaluation may be based on final artwork, written or oral critiques, essays, oral presentations, in-class questions and answers, terminology, etc.

Thinking and Investigation - T& I (20%) Assessment/Evaluation may include proposals, reflections, technical skills, open-ended test questions, concept maps, formulating questions, process work, etc.

Many of the above tasks will include Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). 30% Grade Based on Common Course-Culminating Activities All students will produce a final culminating activity based on their learning from the course. A doctor’s note will be required for absences from culminating activities and exams. For more detail, please consult the Student Agenda. Late Assignments/Missed Evaluations 5% per school day will be deducted for late assignments at the teacher’s discretion Missed tests or quizzes may result in a mark of zero if appropriate documentation is not provided. Chronic absences from evaluations may result in referral to administration. Grade Reports throughout the Year The grade for each term/reporting period is based on the evaluations that have been conducted to that point in the course. They will be based on the most consistent level of achievement to that time. The students’ grades may change when all work is evaluated by the end of the course. An interim report will be sent home in October/March. Midterm reports will be sent home with the students approximately half way through the semester.
