IntroductIon

wHyIsItsoImPortant toImProveHygIene?theglobalincreaseininfectionduetobacteria,viruses,fungi,prions,orparasitesisevidentinallnations.westerndevelopednationshaveseenanincreaseinhospitalacquiredinfectionandantibioticresistantstrainsofbacteria,whilesomedevelopingnationshaveseenincreasesinresistanttuberculosis1 andinmalaria.2

regardlessofgeographicallocation,manyinfectiousdiseasescanbepreventedorcontainedthroughgoodhygienepracticeandeducation.whetherthisistoensurethatstoredwateriscoveredtoreducethespreadofdengueormalaria,thatpurifyingtabletsareusedfordrinkingwater,thatthemouthiscoveredwhencoughing,orsimpleeffectivehandwashingwhenrunningwaterisavailable.

Prevention is better than cure.

theHygieneCouncilisagroupofleadingglobalexpertsinthefieldsofmicrobiology,virology,infectiousdisease,immunology,andpublichealth. theCouncilreviewscurrentinfectiousdiseasethreatstosocietyandformulatesrealisticrecommendationsonsimplehygienemeasurestohelpthepublicimprovelevelsofhygieneinthehomeandcommunityandinturnhelptopreventthespreadofallkindsofinfections.

thisyear,theHygieneCouncil,respondingtoconsumerconfusionabouthowbest tobehygienicallysafeduringthespreadofinfectiousdiseases,hascomeupwithasetofpracticalrecommendationstohelpallofuspracticegoodhandhygiene.Bytranslatingscienceintopractice,everyonecanhaveaclearideaofbestpractice.
