Section 2: Foundations
MissionTo inspire, educate, and empower teachers, parents, and caregivers to increase the amount and quality of physical and emotional education they offer their students and children by providing an innovative and engaging variety of active play and mindfulness activities easily integrated into any daily school or home routine.
Educational PrinciplesOur program is informed by eight learning principles
1. Learning is an integrated experience that is processed both kinesthetically in the body and cognitively in the brain.
2. Play is a child’s work and offers a natural, effective, and rewarding classroom.
3. Movement is the doorway to learning; once it is open, repetition of concepts, explored with engaged curiosity, is the key to retention.
4. Storytelling is one of the most powerful techniques we have to communicate, teach, and motivate.
5. Optimal development and successful learning bloom in a stress-free environment.
6. Acquiring self-regulation and mindfulness skills is crucial to developing the self-control and socio-emotional intelligence needed for lifelong success.
7. Secure relationships are essential for children to thrive physically, emotionally, and cognitively.
8. A healthy, happy, effective learning environment is interdependent and nurtures the health of the whole.
3
MwM Movement and Mindfulness Curriculum4
IntentionThe intention of this comprehensive 30-week movement and mindfulness program is that children enjoy greater physical fitness, emotional stability, and social harmony, as well as ease and joy in learning. Our goal for you, their teacher, parent, or care-giver, is that you enjoy meeting health, physical education, social-emotional learning, and expressive arts standards creatively and effectively.
The program is specifically designed to support the development of the whole child — physically, cognitively, and emotionally — through play. Play-based learning has been shown to decrease stress and increase mind-body well-being, physical and mental coordination, direction-following, early literacy, emotional intelligence, self-control, empathy, resilience, and learning readiness.
Play — open, creative, rollicking play, as well as slow, intentional play — is the organizing principle that brings learning to life and fuels each child’s engagement, creativity, and success. Scientific studies demonstrate conclusively the importance of exercise and divergent (creative) play to the healthy growth and development of the brain and body.
We have organized the curriculum around the nine playful Scooter & Me™ video classes, allowing you to bring a movement specialist directly into your classroom. The video classes engage children in story- driven, follow-along movement sequences embedded with self-regulation skills and universal values. Participation enhances development of:
· Motor Skills and Movement Vocabulary · Early Literacy, Direction Following, and Cooperation· Coordination, Flexibility, Strength, and Balance· Focus and Concentration· Self-Control and Impulse Redirection· Emotional Intelligence, Compression and Resilience
By combining pretend play with instructional, active play, the video classes establish a foundation of movement, health and self-regulation skills. The additional components - cards, poster, music, and curriculum - integrate movement and mindfulness activities into developmentally appropriate themes aligned with the video series.
We emphasize reinforcement of the self-awareness and self-care techniques in order to empower children to recognize, reflect on, and adjust their own behaviors and emotions when appropriate. We call these tools “Adventure Skills.” Regular use of these mindfulness practices diminishes stress and increases the classroom time available for real connecting, caring, and learning.
The Adventure Skills are not just for the children - they are for you, too. We urge you to do them together as a class regularly to de-stress, regroup, support harmony and prepare both mind and body for different kinds of tasks. In one study, conducted in 2005 and repeated in 2007, just five minutes of bilateral exercise (the majority of Adventure Skills involve bilateral movement) at the beginning of the day resulted in a statistically significant decrease in physical and behavioral challenges (Dustow 2005, 2007) in comparison to the days when the activity was not conducted.

Lesson Plan 1 - Physical Strength Why? Building a strong and healthy physical body is crucial to learning and living. Movement that builds physical strength, simultaneously strengthens neuronal connections in the brain. Body and mind are inseparable learners and creators. Engage Me! Strong muscles let us play, run fast, jump far, swing high, crawl, skip, move our body from one point to another, and so much more. Invite the children to do different movement activities and ‘feel’ their muscles at work. Use the movement examples we use above and/or come up with your own. What else does strength help us do? How about help others? When a friend falls down, can you help them up? Can you help Mom carry groceries? What else can you do? Lesson Plan 1 - Physical Sensations Why? Physical sensations accompany every thought, action and reaction. When children can start to track sensations in their bodies, they develop greater mindfulness and self-‐control. Whether exploring the texture of a fern or feeling the rush of fear from being startled or scared, this week, regularly encourage your students to pause, breathe deeply, and focus on what they physically feel and why. Extension for Circle Time: Gather together objects with different textures, temperatures, and weights. Place half in a paper bag. Ask your students which they would prefer: putting their hand into the bag and exploring something they can’t see, or touching the things they can see. The unknown is often scary, what they can see, however, they are probably curious about. This is a familiar learning pattern. Engage Me! What physical sensations do you feel as you touch different objects (cold, warm, feathery, scratchy, soft, ticklish, hard, slimy, wet, damp, pokey, electric, dull, sharp)? When you touch something can it affect how you feel (happy, sad, comfortable, miserable, excited, scared, angry)? Adventure Skill DescriptionsThe Physiological Basis
Strength: The Magic Scooter
Drink Water #1a simple action – that has a powerful effect – and yet is easy to forget to do. But, it’s so important, to model and remind your kids to be sipping water every 20-30 minutes. Water is absorbed well by the body when taken in frequent small amounts. sipping water, the universal solvent, plays an essential role in the efficient functioning of the electrical transmissions within the nervous system and ultimately our ability to think, learn and interact. We are electrical beings we need to stay hydrated to feel, think and do well.
Breathe #4When we are upset, anxious or tense, we often hold our breath, which makes us even more upset. you can shift yourself anytime by just remembering to pause, settle down and breathe.
Eat Fruits and Veggies #2These foods provide vital nutrients and anti-oxidants to every system of the body. They also contain phyto-nutrients, which are water dense, help lubricate the body and act as cleansing agents, which facilitates absorption of water through the intestinal wall system. Make sure you and your children eat fresh, unprocessed, colorful fruits or veggies at every meal.
Play, Move & Exercise Every Day (and get lots of play) #3Movement and play boost the levels of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) a substance important for the growth of brain cells. in one research study, several primary schools cut back on academic instruction in order to make more time for physical play. The kids involved either maintained or improved. Research shows that the more kids move, the stronger, smarter, more aware, in control and able to learn they become.
Section 8: Adventure Skills
Flexibility: Monkeying Around at the Zoo
Humming Breath #5Place one hand on your belly button, place the other hand in the middle of your chest, close to where you would place your hand for the pledge of allegiance, yet centered. Take a deep breath and hummmmm while breathing out, exhaling through the nose and letting the naval move toward the spine to ground, center and relax the body and calm the mind. This switches on the attention pathways, wakes up the brain and helps one pay attention to what is going on.
Infinity 8’s (aka: Vision 8’s) #6With one thumb at eye level, centered on the nose, the other hand relaxed at your
side, draw the thumb through the air up and to the left, tracing a large 8 lying on it’s side, moving counterclockwise for the first loop and then up through the midline of the body and to the right, clockwise for the second loop. The infinity symbol encourages coordination of the eyes for crossing the visual midline and facilitating eye-teaming and binocular vision.
Balance: Possum’s Tail Oh No! Ah Yes! #7
When we have been given sad or bad news we often reach up and instinctively cradle our forehead in our hand or hands. We shake our heads, thinking or feeling, “oh no.” This innate wisdom brings attention, focus and awareness to the prefrontal cortex, the site of planning, complex decision-making, and intentional social behavior. engaging these executive functions appears to regulate the amydgala’s fight-or-flight hyperarousal response (Ratey, 2008) and calm and relax the body.
Elephant Wisdom (aka: Full Sensing Mode) #8elephants have an acute sense of hearing and can communicate with others as far as 4 kilometers away (Katy Payne). When we want to hear and respond to the world around ourselves we can reach up and gently rub our ears from the top down to the bottom, relaxing the tension in the neck and shoulders and bringing our attention to our auditory system. This exercise is used in Touch for health and other acupressure systems and is said to stimulate acupuncture points in the ears, points related to every mental and physical function.

Monkey Wisdom #9standing loosely and easily reach across the midline of your body and touch the opposite leg, smoothly and comfortably switch, swinging the other arm across midline to touch the opposite leg. Moving rhythmically this whole body motion is an ideal gross motor warm-up to prepare for fine motor skills, like reading and writing, which also cross the body’s vertical midline.
Curiosity: Robot Makes a New Friend on the Moon
Full Scanning Mode #10Place one hand on your belly button, place the other hand in the middle of your chest, close to where you would place your hand for the pledge of allegiance, yet centered. your thumb and forefinger rest on the soft tissue points beneath the collar bone and on either side of the sternum. inhale fully and then as you exhale slowly and smoothly, move just your eyes from right to left. The movement facilitates improved eye teaming skills and cross-motor coordination.
Full Sensing Mode #11When we want to hear and respond appropriately to the world around ourselves we can reach up and gently rub our ears, relaxing the tension in the neck and shoulders and bringing our attention to our auditory system. This exercise is used in Touch for health and other acupressure systems and is said to stimulate acupuncture points in the ears, points related to every mental and physical function.
Choices: Set Sail!
Deep Down Wisdom #12Seated on the floor, in a chair, or standing up, whichever is the most comfortable and stable position for you; place one leg over the other. Put two thumbs facing up, rotate your thumbs down toward the floor, cross your arms, link your fingers and roll your hands into your chest and up. this activity invites calm, dissipates fear and anger and helps to focus scattered attention, allowing us to dig deep down into our clearest, quietest self to figure something out or just feel how quiet and relaxed we can be.
Section 8: Adventure Skills
Rock the Boat Wisdom #13When stormy emotions crowd the horizon, sit on a padded floor or surface and lean back, letting your hands support your weight behind you and lifting your feet off the floor. With your weight balanced between your hands and your feet, gently rock on one gluteus (bottom) muscle, than shift to the other. The learned relaxation of this movement supports attentiveness and memory.
Perseverance: The Tortoise, The Hare and The Dragon
Elephant Wisdom
Cat Wisdom: (aka: Cat-Dog Stretch) #14sweep your legs around come into a tabletop, tummy down position. arch your back. cat Wisdom is about the power of releasing stress. Bring your paws forward, sit on your heels and stretch your hips back, lengthen out your arms in front of yourself. Feel your muscles limber and lengthen. curl toes under and push back, bottoms up, heads down. lengthen and relax your heels to the ground, releasing your calf muscles.
Acceptance: The Coral Reef
Fish Breath #15Take a deep breath through your nose, now push it all out through the mouth with bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop bloop, blooooop. and again, deep breath in, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop bloop, blooooop. inhaling deeply to pull all the oxygen we need into our lungs and exhaling completely to make room for more. When we bring our conscious awareness to our breath, allowing ourselves to expand and relax in a steady even rhythm, we facilitate the abundant intake of oxygen to the brain and body, relaxing and restoring our system.
Ocean Wisdom #16Place one hand on your belly button, place the other hand in the middle of your chest, close to where you would place your hand for the pledge of allegiance, yet centered. your thumb and forefinger rest on the soft tissue points beneath the collar bone and on either side of the sternum. inhale fully and then as you exhale slowly and smoothly, move just your eyes from right to left. The movement facilitates improved eye teaming skills and cross-motor coordination.
