MESSAGE FROM THEFESTIVAL PROGRAMMERIttookusquiteawhiletodecideonwhatwewouldname EMMEDIA’s media arts festival. It had to besomethingthatreallyspoketowhatEMMEDIAwasallabout, andmakepeoplefeelexcitedfor it.Thiswasgoingtobeourfirsttimeholdingafestival,andwithastrongreputationalreadyinplace,wedidn’twanttodisappoint.ItwasGrantPoier,oneofthefoundersof EMMEDIA, and also an active participant on myprogramming committee, that struck a chord with“Particle + Wave”. Inspired by our new 2012/2013programming theme,Light, itwasano-brainer thatthis was it. We decided it was about time this cityhad a media arts festival, and if EMMEDIA wasn’tgoingtoholdit, whowill?

For the festival, I knew there were three things I wanted to do. First of all, Iwanted toactivateapublic space, specificallyCentralMemorialPark since it ’spracticallyEMMEDIA’sbackyard.Beforeyouknew it,we roundedup17artiststobepartofanamazingeventcalledBringYourOwnBeamer(BYOB).Imagine,themostbeautiful park in the city lit upwith lights and sounds from someofthemosttalentedartistsinthecity.Ifthat’snotenoughtohookyouin,Ithinka foodtruckor twomightappear… justsayin’.Secondly, Iwantedtoshowcasethe works that have come out from EMMEDIA, made by our many talentedartist-producers.Someoftheseworkswereincludedinthisyear’sPrairie Tales, which is already in its14thyearof celebratingAlbertan filmandvideo!Otherworks were produced in-house through our Compression Camps, all made injustseveraldays!Someofthemweremadebyseasonedproducers, whilesomeof themmade their first video through Compression Camp. It ’s amazingwhatpeoplecanaccomplishinashortamountoftimewiththerightresources.Lastly,Iwanted to throwaparty! What’sa festivalwithout thecelebration?We’llbeclosingthefestivalwithabigbang,activatingthehistoricRoyalCanadianLegion#1Branchwithscreenings,installations,andofcourse,musicanddancing!

LUMINARIES:PRODUCTION ACCESS 2012

Now in its 29th year, EMMEDIA’s annualProduction Access program has supportedlocal emerging and established mediaartists in the creation of new worksover an intensive four-month period, byprovidingaccess toprofessionalproductionequipment, post-production facilities,hands-on training, as well as conceptualandtechnicalmentorship.Luminaries is theculmination of the 2012 Production Accessprogram, andIampleasedtobepresentingsix diverse and challenging works createdby this year’s participants; Zac Slams,MattMcKinney, Kim Seung Pen, Greg Marshall,LonParkerandBogdanCheta.A luminary isliterallyanobject, a celestialbody like themoonorsun, thatgivesoff light. Incontextof theprogram, it should beunderstood as

anindividualwhoenlightensorinfluencesothers.

This programming year of Light marks the inaugural presentation of Particle + Wave: EMMEDIA’s festival ofmedia arts. The exact nature of visible light isa mystery that has puzzled humanity for centuries. Greek scientists from theancient Pythagorean discipline postulated that every visible object emitsa steady stream of particles, while Aristotle concluded that light travels in amanner similar to waves in the ocean. Wave–particle duality postulates thatall particles exhibit bothwave and particle properties, meaning at times lightbehavesasaparticle,andatothertimesasawave.Thiscomplementary,ordualroleforthebehavioroflightbecomesafittingmetaphorfortheworkscreatedbyourLuminaries.

Creatingworksthatchallengeorsubverttraditionalmodesofpresentation, ourProduction Access participants have broken free of the screen, expanding theimageandbreakingthenarrative.Thefestivalhasaffordedustheopportunitytomove away fromour traditional venue, the historic Plaza Theatre, and intomoreintimatepublicandprivatespaces.Eachoftheworkspresentedchallengeaccepted conventionsofwhat constitutesMediaArt in their ownuniqueway;fromZacSlams’sgender-hackingmulti-channelvideoinstallationattheUnitledArtSociety’sSatelliteGallery, toBogdanCheta’s research-heavyexplorationofrelation-aesthetics,presentedintheformofa48-hourretreat.Alloftheworksexemplify the notion of wave-particle duality by refusing to be contained ordichotomisedbythetoolsorprocessesemployedintheircreation.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Bogdan lives and works in Calgary. His work has shown at places suchas the Illingworth Kerr Gallery,TRUCK Gallery, Pith Gallery, UntitledArt Society’s Satellite Gallery, theHigh Performance Rodeo and morerecently, EMMEDIA. Last year, heinitiated a series of walk-basedprojects in his hometown Bucharest,Romaniawhich ledhim to re-imaginepossibilities within his ongoing walk-based research in Calgary. Formally,Island Night is in direct relation tothe late-night walks in Bucharest,

in the way that it constructs an ephemeral urban classroom througha cityʼs unexposed, internal secrets. In an aggressively unhip effortto make money, Bogdan cleans toilets at a local gym, then at night, and insecret, hebuildsacomplexworldofsculptureswhicharethenabandoned insideparked railway trains;enablinghiswork the liminalpossibility to travel across Canada, anonymously – like train carsdressed in graffiti. f/ash/v/itter isanexplorationofnewwaystocreatemusic. It isbasedonthebroad concept of light as found inmonitors, televisions, computers, tablets, mobiledevices, andother technologies.Thepremisebehindmonitors is thattheycreateawindowoffakespacethatisaugmented, mediatedandvirtual;itisessentiallyanimitationofrealityorrealities.Sinceourrealitieshavebecomesimulatedwithmonitors, adistortionorglitch inthis“reality”makesviewersawareofthissimulation. Therefore, thesoundsandvisualsoftheperformanceare focused on using the flaws found in technology, because it triggers adisruptioninthesimulation.

“BYOB is a celebration of the new world we live in and a glimpse of what computing could look like in the future. Today, the Internet is confined to screens. Tomorrow, information will surround us, composing our surfaces, defining our spaces, enmeshing itself with the ether. A moving image is never an object, and when it is coupled with the increased flexibility of portable projection, the realm of experience quickly expands.”- Rafaël Rozendaal
