With the newly developed Kayak 4 Life program, the AWA can help you, your
school and your pool organize a fun educational unit that:
• covers Alberta Education curriculum outcomes
• introduces children to a new recreational // competitive sport
• teaches water and boating safety promotes Canada’s aboriginal heritage
• challenges all students is accessible to all students, no matter what their body type or fitness
level
• is located in a safe and trusted environment, your local swimming pool
The AWA in conjunction with Makadiff Sports is sending a fleet of kayaks to 20
communities this year. After training lifeguards and teachers, the kayaks will stay in
the community for 2 -3 weeks to allow schools and groups to use for free. You only
pay the local pool costs.
Your pool and the Instructor can handle up to 10 students. We suggest that you
schedule 2 one hour lessons for half the class and send the other group to another
activity for the period.
Check out the Kayak for Life video at https://vimeo.com/124963156 and

for more information about how kayaking fits into your educational program.
Aquatic skills for watercraft require fundamentally different movement patterns from
other sports. A watercraft in a floating environment requires balance, propulsion and
directional control. This is a unique learned skill, best learned by age 10.
Developing fundamental paddling skills and safe boating practices at an early age
will enable individuals to safely enjoy a variety of water sports later in life, such as:
sailing, canoeing, rowing, rafting, paddle-boarding, surfing and general boating.
The American Academy of Pediatricians recommends overweight children
participate in activities that take advantage of their stature and muscle strength
that also neutralize their weight, such as water-based sports. This helps encourage
children to stay active while they grow taller into their body size.
When paddling skills are taught with boating/water safety and health & wellness
components, it becomes
a well-rounded program
that connects students
to a lifetime of activity
and adventure.
This program can be
taught by non-paddlers
(pool staff, volunteers or
teachers) trained in the 8
hour NCCP/CKC Pool
Kayak Instructor course
using children sized
kayaks.
