Conformance StandardsSpecifications — Fittings OnlySAE Standards. Code 61 and 62 fittings meet or exceed allrequirement of SAE J518.
ISO Standards. Code 61 and 62 fittings meet or exceed allrequirement of ISO 6162-1 and -2, respectively.
The fittings with square bolt pattern flange connections meet orexceed all the requirements of ISO 6164.
How Code 61/62 Flanges WorkThe fitting body, weld sleeve or braze sleeve contains a highdurometer O-ring that is held captive in a precision machinedgroove. As an alternative, a plate with a bonded high durometerelastomer seal is placed between the flat face of a flanged tubeand the port connection.
As the four-bolt clamp is tightened, the O-ring, or bonded seal,is compressed to achieve a tight, positive seal. When as-sembled to the recommended torque, a leak-free connection isassured. With flat sealing surfaces on mating components, allflange connections have virtually unlimited remakability, pro-viding the O-ring or bonded seal is in good condition.
Tube Flanging with the ParkerParflange MachineThe Parker Parflange 1090 machine is designed specifically toflange tube to Code 61 and 62 connections. Utilizing an orbitalcold forming process, a flat, smooth and rigidly supported 90°sealing surface is produced. Flanging with the Parflange 1090machine eliminates the need for welding or brazing a sleeve tothe tube end. Some of the advantages of the Parflange systemare:
• The Parflange process is several times faster than mostwelding or brazing methods. After the tube is placed inthe machine, a cycle time of 15 seconds delivers a fullyformed tube end.
• The Parflange process does not require any specialpre- or post-cleaning of the tube or sleeve.
• Unlike brazing, the Parflange process does not requireany flux, braze alloy, post-braze cleaner or rust inhibi-tor.
• Unlike welding, the Parflange process does not requiredegreasing of the tube and sleeve, x-ray inspection orpressure testing to assure integrity of the weld joint.
• The Parflange process uses an environmentally safelubricant which does not emit hazardous fumes.
• The Parflange process eliminates the potential leakpath between the braze/weld sleeve and the tube.
• The Parflange process does not require cool down toprevent tube warping associated with welding.
IntroductionThe SAE and ISO Code 61/62 and ISO 6164 flange fittingshave been added to Tube Fittings Division's product line toprovide a leak-free solution and higher pressure capabilities insizes 3/4" through 3".
The Code 61/62 and ISO 6164 flange fittings incorporate eitheran O-ring or bonded elastomeric seal, a fitting body or flangeand a four-bolt clamp. As shown in Fig. J1, this connection canbe achieved in five ways: a machined fitting body whichincorporates an O-ring can be mated to a flat face port andattached by a four-bolt clamp, a flange formed on the end of atube can be mated to a flat face port using a metal plate withbonded elastomeric seal and assembled with a four-bolt flangeclamp, two flanged tubes can be connected using a steel platewith bonded elastomeric seal, a flanged tube and hose end withO-ring can be connected using four bolt flange clamps, or ahose with flange end and O-ring can be connected to a flat faceport.
Design and ConstructionCode 61/62 and ISO 6164 connection consists of three maincomponents: a flange, a seal and a clamp.
The Flange. There are three types of flanges that may be usedto complete this connection.
1) A machined fitting body which includes a flange headon one end and may have many types of connectionson the other. The available configurations for theopposite end are: Seal-Lok, Triple-Lok, Ferulok, EO/EO-2 and a weld spud.
2) A flange assembled by forming tube material around asleeve using the Parflange process. This forms asmooth flat face on the end of the tube, eliminating theneed for welding or brazing.
3) A flange which is welded or brazed to the end of thetube.
The O-ring or Seal Plate. When using a machined fitting body,weld flange or braze flange, sealing is achieved by an O-ringwhich is placed in a groove machined in the part. When usinga flanged tube end formed by the Parflange process, a sealplate, composed of a metal plate with a bonded elastomericseal, is placed between the flat flange face and the mating part.
The Four-Bolt Clamp. Clamps are usually necessary to as-semble the connection to either a port or another fitting/flange.Some fittings are manufactured as blocks which do not requirea clamp. Clamps are available in both a one-piece and a split(two-piece) style. Both styles are attached by threading fourbolts into a port or opposing threaded clamp to a predeterminedassembly torque.

AssemblyFitting/Tube to Port Connection. When assembling a fittingadapter or brazed/welded tube end, assure that the O-ring is inplace in the flange head groove. When using a Parflangeformed tube end, place the seal plate on the port, aligning itsholes with the threaded holes of the port.
Place the fitting/tube on the port, centering it between themounting holes. Place the solid clamp/split clamp halves overthe fitting and thread the four bolts into the port.

Assemble the bolts, gradually tightening in a crossing patternuntil the recommeded assembly torque is reached.
Tube-to-Tube or Tube-to-Hose Connection. When assem-bling two flanged tubes, place the seal plate on one flange andthen place the second flange against the seal plate. Whenassembling a flanged tube to a hose, assure that the O-ring isin place in the hose end and then place the hose end againstthe flanged tube end.
Place the flange clamps over each tube/hose end and connectusing four bolts. Please note that when making this type ofconnection, it is necessary to use at least one solid flangeclamp. This connection is also made easier by utilizing oneclamp which has threaded holes for the attaching bolts.

Trouble Shooting
Leakage at faceseal end:
Misalignment Align the brazed tube end and theor improper fit connecting fitting properly before
tightening the tube nut. Hold the flatfaces of the mating fittings againsteach other while threading the boltsand wrench tightening. Ensure that thetube bends are made to the appropri-ate angle(s).
Damaged, pinched Use a new O-ring or seal plate.or missing O-ring/ Properly install O-ring in the fittingSeal Plate groove. Make sure that the O-ring
stays in the groove while tighteningthe fitting.
Extruded O-ring/Seal Replace the O-ring or seal plate andcheck for the following:- Proper alignment (see above)- Pressure surges in excess of 133%
of rated pressure of the fitting couldcause the O-ring or seal to extrude.Tighten the nut to the recommendedtorque.
Improper tightening Check the joint for tightness. Retorqueto the Parker recommended torquevalue. If it still leaks, it could be due toany one or combination of causeslisted below. Take the joint apart andfollow the recommendations listed.
Braze overflow Remove the affected sleeve and re-on sealing surface braze a new one in its place. Do not
try to file, sand or grind the brazeoverflow. Braze alloy tends to flow inthe direction of higher temperature.This overflow can occur if the sealsurface is at a higher temperaturethan the tail end of the sleeve whenthe braze ring starts melting. There-fore, when the ring starts melting, theheat source should be relocated to thesmall diameter of the sleeve topromote braze flow through the joint.
Damaged fitting Check and replace fittings. Because ofelastomeric seal, this connection istolerant of minor imperfections on itssealing surface; but it cannot tolerategross scratches, nicks, dents, etc.Damaged threads can give a falsesense of joint tightness because oftheir poor threading ability.
Leakage at braze joint:
Improper joint Flux and reheat the joint, removeclearance and replace with a sleeve of appropri-
ate material and with recommendedbore diameter for proper joint clear-ance. Repeat brazing in accordancewith recommended procedures.
Mixing of sleeve & Do not mix sleeve and tube mater-tube material ials. Always use steel sleeves with
steel tubing and stainless sleeves withstainless tubing. Mixing materialschanges the joint clearance becauseof different thermal expansioncharacteristics of the two materials.
Improper/inadequate First degrease the tube end andcleaning sleeve in suitable alkaline cleaner.
Remove oxide build-up with aluminumfree emery cloth, if needed.
Improper braze alloy Check with the manufacturer toconfirm braze alloy compatibility.
Improper/inadequate Apply flux liberally to the sleeve andflux tube end. Use AWS FB3A Parker
White Flux (Handy & Harman’s HandyFlux) for steel only and AWS FB3CParker Black Flux (Handy & Harman’sType B-1) for steel or stainless steel.
Inadequate/improper The key is to ensure that both thebraze temperature tube and sleeve reach braze tempera-
ture at about the same time. A dull redcolor of the tube and sleeve is a goodindication of adequate braze tempera-ture at which the braze ring shouldmelt completely. Too little heat maynot melt the braze ring completely,causing incomplete braze flow.
Too much heat can cause braze alloyto boil resulting in pinhole type porosityin the joint. It can also burn the fluxretarding the braze flow.
A complete 360° fillet at the small endof the sleeve is a good indication of fullbraze flow.

Features, Advantages & Benefits8. Tube Wall — Code 61/62 fittings can be used on thin toheavy wall tubing. Code 61/62 fittings can also be used with thewidest range of tubing grades.
9. Reusability/Remakeability — Code 61/62 fittings can bedisassembled and reassembled many times. Simply replacethe O-ring or seal plate and tighten to recommended torque.
10. Materials — Code 61/62 can be manufactured from awide variety of materials. The most popular materials currentlyused are steel and stainless steel.
11. Available Configurations — Code 61/62 fittings areavailable as a standard in 14 different configurations (as shownin the visual index on page J2). Some of these configurationsare available in as many as 28 different size combinations.Several of these fittings can actually reduce the total number ofconnections needed in a system. (Other configurations can bemanufactured upon request.)
12. Available Sizes — Code 61/62 fittings are available asstandard in sizes 3/4" through 3".
13. Parflange Technology — Designed to be used with Code61/62 fittings, the Parflange machine utilizes an orbital coldflow forming process to produce a smooth, rigidly supported90° sealing surface on the tube end. The flanged tube endsconnect with SAE J518 conections. This patented Parflangeprocess eliminates the need for messy and time-consumingbrazing and welding.
1. Manufacture — Code 61/62 fittings conform to SAE J518and ISO 6162. This specification controls dimensions andtolerances of Code 61/62 fittings. (All shaped fittings aremachined from forgings for additional strength.)
2. Sealing Capability — An elastomeric O-ring or bondedseal forms the primary sealing element. The O-ring is con-tained within a precision machined groove on the fitting body.It is compressed into the groove by the flat face of the port, thusassuring leak free sealing.
3. Pressure Rating — Code 61/62 fittings have the highestworking pressures on the market in sizes -12 to -40, ranging to6,000 psi, depending on size.
4. Visible Inspection of Parflange — The surface of theflange should be reasonably smooth with no deep scratches,gouges or indentations. Minor surface imperfections outside ofthe seal area are acceptable.
5. No Tube Entry — Tube does not enter into the body of thefitting, allowing for zero clearance, drop-in installation of com-ponents. This makes repair and maintenance very easy.
6. Assembly — A variety of sleeve attachment methods areavailable. These include torch brazing, welding and flanging.Code 61/62 fittings can also be used as hose adapters.
7. Make-Up — Code 61/62 fittings require asembly to speci-fied torque values.
