This Week’s Reflection
This weekend the Church has celebrated the Feast of the ' Presentation of the Lord ' It is traditionally
celebrated 40 days after the birth of the Lord and is the official conclusion of the season of Christmas.
It is for this reason that many Catholic churches throughout the world still keep this tradition alive
and do not dismantle their cribs until after the celebration of the 2nd of February. (Fr Joe still had his
crib up in the porch of his house at St Basil's until midday on Saturday!!!)
The origins of the Feast has its roots in the Gospel of St Luke 2: 22 - 40. Where we read about the
presentation of the child Jesus in the Temple and the extraordinary sequence of events that took
place there. It certainly brings alive that old saying that ' God works in mysterious ways ' and always
takes us by surprise.
The scene in the Temple is no exception where God revealed his intentions for the world through
that epiphany of the old man Simeon. Luke tells us that Simeon was an ordinary upright man whose
greatest wish and prayer was that God would allow him to be alive to see the prophecy fulfilled,

little dreaming of course that he would be the one chosen by God to announce the fulfilment of the
prophecy. No one was more surprised than Joseph and Mary when they stood there mystified at
the things being said about their son as Simeon took the child in his arms, he thanked God with
those immortal words on his lips of the " The Nunc Dimittis” (Gospel of Luke 2: 29 – 32) ‘a light to
enlighten the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel'.
In the liturgical celebration of the Feast of the Presentation on 2nd February the Church uses the
symbol of light in proclaiming Jesus as the Light of the Nations with the blessing and procession of
candles at the beginning of the service. Fr Bill

SYNOD 2020
Father, we thank you for the love you have shown us in the gift of Jesus, your Son.
We thank you for the gift of the Church, through which you show us that you are always with us
and are always at work in our lives. As we journey together to Synod 2020 help us to become the
Church that you are calling us to be. May your Holy Spirit be powerfully at work among us.
Strengthen each of us and guide Francis, our Pope and Malcom, our Archbishop.
Help us to respond to the challenges of our times in new ways to bring your love to all our sisters
and brothers. We make this prayer through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Staycation
Air travel is one of the biggest ways that
individuals increase their carbon footprint. It
is thought that a single return flight from
London to New York contributes to almost a
quarter of the average person’s annual
emissions.
There are so many amazing places to
explore in the UK which involve a much
lower emission and also support the UK
economy; Cheshire countryside, beautiful
Scottish Lochs, the Lake District, Wales, to
name just a few.

The Parish of St Wilfrid can offer you a chance to
meet like-minded people… to share conversation
together, in a warm and friendly atmosphere… to
provide a place where some of the questions that
may puzzle you can be explored… to have time and
space to discern if you are being called to a Catholic
way of life. For more information speak to Pauline

Sacrament of Reconciliation
During this week the children of our parish who are
preparing to make their First Holy Communion in the
Summer will be celebrating the Sacrament of
Reconciliation for the first time.
As they gather with their families and catechists, we
keep them in our prayers.
ALTAR SERVERS
Over the next few weeks you may notice in
the four churches of our parish that the
altar servers are seated in a different place
to where they have been so far. The
reason behind this is to make them a more
visible part of the Liturgy, and especially to
give more prominence to the ministry of the
young people in the parish.
Newsletter Printing Team New rotas are now ready for collection from the Parish Office.
Walsingham Pilgrimage

The Knights’ Choir needs Gentlemen Singers!
The Knights’ Choir has for many years provided a
service available to people and organisations within
the town to entertain in afternoon clubs and
residential homes etc. One of the choir’s main
services is to be available to the bereaved, to lead
the singing at family funerals when required.
However, if the choir’s future is to be assured, it now
needs to recruit more singers, particularly male
singers. If you are a retired gentleman and have
some free time on weekday mornings and are
interested in becoming involved please contact Roy
(424 1924) or Brendon (420 0611).
Audition not required and little travelling is involved
as most engagements are in and around the Widnes
area. The choir donates, on average, £5,000 per
year to local causes.

Rudder, Fr Carl Mugan, Catherine Darby SND,
Jessy Mottram-Noé, Tony Rudder, Shelagh

the overall development of the parish.

reflections on the Gospel for this
Sunday.
• This week the group were at Parbold for
the Away Day and were joined by Martin
Miller, (Chief Operating Officer
Archdiocese of Liverpool) and Susan
Warburton from the Administration
Team.
• The main focus of the day was to share
thoughts, ideas and reflections on the
following areas of parish life;
➢ Administration
➢ Co-ordination
➢ Finance
➢ Buildings/Site Management

➢ Staff/Line Management
• To aid discussion the group looked at;

the smooth running of the Parish; what
systems/structures do we have, (exist
in), that might hinder the smooth
running of the Parish?
• Further considerations and
developments will continue over the
coming weeks.
