October 2014
Independence? A crazy idea! Or is it?? I don’t know about you, but I watched all night as the results came in from the Scottish independence referendum. I was really hoping there would be a good ‘No’ vote, although I fully understand the reasons why many of my friends—many of them intelligent, thoughtful, passionate Scots—were voting ‘Yes’. I couldn’t quite put it into words, but I really do believe that we’re ‘Better Together’ in the UK, just as I think we’re ‘Better Together’ in our villages and in our parishes. We often admire people for being what we call ‘fiercely independent’, but at the end of the day we need each other—we’re actually ‘Better Together’, whatever we may think.
But I’m not writing about that to make a political point. It is just one of those things I have been thinking about as the harvest festival season has been coming round and the crops have been gathered in around us over the last couple of months. And it wasn’t brought on by the Scottish independence campaign, but by a bit of news from Africa.
As the Ebola crisis has got worse and worse, one of the side effects has been a food crisis. Why? Because restricting the movement of people to avoid spreading infection also restricts movement of goods—especially food—and the countries affected depend on food imports. Migrant workers can’t move around, so food production has been scaled back. The workers can’t work, and at the same time food prices have shot up. It’s a crisis—we need each other for the basics of life, and right now the people of West Africa need the support of the people of the Western World.
We’re “Better Together” in this country too, and harvest is a good time to say “thank you” to our own farmers and food producers, and to be generous to those who are struggling just a few miles from us in the Stockton area, perhaps even just a few houses from us in our own street. We have foodbank collection boxes in each of our churches. Please give generously—just a couple of items from the list from each of us can make a real difference. We’re “Better Together”, you see.
Revd David Brooke

New Sunday Service Pattern
As explained in last months magazine, Robert Cooper is now a Chaplain at North Tees Hospital so will be working less in the Stockton Country Parish. As a result there is now only one Sunday morning service on the third Sunday of the month. This will be at 10.30am and the location of this service will
vary each month. In October the service will be at St Peter’s, Bishopton and in November it will be held at St Cuthbert’s, Redmarshall. Please see the centre pages to confirm details. If anyone needs a lift to a service please contact Gwynn in the Parish Office - ring 01740 630810 or email [email protected] - or talk to one of the ministers or Church-wardens - contact details are inside the front cover. There will also be a Sunday evening service at Wynyard Chapel at 5.00pm on the third
Sunday of the month as usual which you are most welcome to attend.

10.00am 5th october
and 2nd november
st john’s stillington Last month at cross-factor we returned to our tour of famous Bible characters by looking at Samuel. We’re celebrating
harvest at October cross-factor, and the children from William Cassidi school will be with us helping to lead the service. That is always something really special. Please come along with gifts
of dried goods for the foodbank (shopping list on page 3).
To link with the harvest theme, we’re going to look at the story of two more Bible characters with names we still often use today—Ruth and Naomi. It’s a great story that takes place at the time of the harvest in Israel, and it’s really important because Ruth was the great
grandmother of the famous King David, and is even on Jesus’ family tree!
Guess where that takes us next month? Well maybe you got it half right—we’ll be discovering about King Saul—the first King—and the great King David himself. God wasn’t too keen on the idea of kings, as we’ll see, and sometimes they were good, sometimes they slipped up badly, just like us, and sometimes they were just a little crazy.
Every cross-factor includes a mix of fun, great songs, creative activities, prayer and a good time together. The October and November services are no different. They’re for anyone, young or old, and first-timers are always warmly welcomed. For details, contact David Brooke (see inside front cover for his email and phone number).
New to cross-factor? There’s always a welcome for everyone

Harvest Festival
Harvest Thanksgiving at Bishopton will be a joint service for all the churches in our Parish, and will take place on Sunday 19th October at 10.30am. Everyone will be most welcome, so please come along to this important occasion in our church’s year. We are all blessed to live in such a beautiful, agricultural area so Harvest Festival has always had special significance. Whilst it would be good to enjoy some fresh fruits of the harvest in church, gifts of dried and canned food would be particularly welcome, as the focus of the service will be on supporting our local Food Bank. We
look forward to seeing you on 19th October.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP AND DONATIONS
Thank you to everyone who has sent in donations to contribute towards the production cost of the Parish News Magazines. The brown envelopes that
were sent out a few months ago are still coming in and to date have raised over £500.00. This significant figure helps us to produce and distribute the
magazines to nearly 2000 homes.
A special thank you must go to all of our volunteers who send in the news
from their village every month and deliver the magazines.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our advertisers who continue to support the magazine. Their subscriptions make
up the rest of the revenue needed to produce the magazine every month.

Building a more dementia friendly Stockton-on-Tees
Cleveland Alzheimer’s have been working with individuals and organisations from across Stockton-on-Tees to develop the borough as a
nationally recognised dementia friendly community.
The Dementia Friendly Stockton project aims to ensure that people living with dementia can remain active and included members of our communities and is asking every individual and organisation from across the borough to think about what they can do to help achieve this aim. The photograph below is from the project launch which was chaired by Alex
Cunningham MP.
The project is supporting organisations from the private, public and voluntary sector to increase their awareness and understanding about dementia and will ask local organisations to take a number of easy, low cost steps that will make their services more accessible to people living
with dementia.
There are currently 18 members of the Dementia Friendly Stockton project including the ARC, Cleveland Fire Brigade, Lloyds Bank, St John the Baptist Parish Church, Stockton Library Services, Tesco Extra and Tilly
Bailey and Irvine Solicitors among others.
Organisations that sign up to become more dementia friendly will display the ‘Working to become dementia friendly’ symbol to show their commitment. Chair of the Dementia Friendly Stockton project, Peter Otter explained “’It’s great that we already have so many local organisations committed to becoming more dementia friendly however this is only the beginning and we will hopefully see many more local businesses across
the borough following their example.”
To find out more information about the Dementia Friendly Stockton project and how your organisation can get involved please visit www.dementiafriendlystockton.co.uk or contact Peter Otter on

William Cassidi C of E School News
The new school year has brought with it many changes to William Cassidi School. Our new nursery children are enjoying the opportunity of staying for full days, we have lots of children opting to stay for school dinners
and with a new cook, there is definitely a real buzz about meal times.
Co-operative learning has been in full force this term. Children have enjoyed working in teams during their English lessons, learning to be active listeners and celebrating their success with team cheers. It is nice to see them helping and encouraging each other, not just in their lessons but
in all aspects of school life.
This message was reinforced by our annual Year Six trip to Robinwood. Mrs Robertson and Mrs Chatto experienced the joy of the ‘thousand mile trek’ to the centre as well as such delights as the ‘piranha pool’. It is a great team building experience for all the pupils and a chance for them
to see the staff as more than just teachers.
They were not the only class to venture outside the school gates. Year Four visited Teesmouth Visitors Centre. The children had a preliminary session in school from staff there and then spent a day on the dunes, beach and finally back in the visitor centre, studying the mini-beasts they found. This linked well with their science topic of living things and habitats and took advantage of the
wonderful natural resources we have on our doorstep.
Despite lots of changes, some things always remain the same. Once again our Year Six children will be helping with the harvest festival service at St Johns Church and collecting gifts of food produce brought in by the children of all classes in order to distribute them to the elderly members of the local community. We know from their responses that they really
appreciate these donations and the thoughtfulness of our children.
At a time when the news seems so full of hate and division, our annual peace day celebrations seemed even more pertinent. Children in each class spent the day doing various activities to really focus their thoughts on the importance of striving for peace and looking at ways in which they can play their part. It is important that we can make time in the frenetic and exciting aspects of school life to think about life outside school and how we
all have a role to play.

The Gallops There appears to be confusion about access to the bridleway often referred to as “the Gallops”. The bridleway is privately
owned by Mr and Mrs Ellison. It is a bridleway for the community to exercise horses in a safe manner and for the general public to use and exercise their dogs. The general public have permission from Mr and Mrs Ellison to use the
bridleway unheeded.
