Legal Interventions
PIL in the matter of custodial torture and death of Gopi s/oThankappan, Cherthalai, Alleppy. Final order given in favour ofJananeethi by Kerala High Court in 1998.
PIL in the matter of trafficking of 75000 young women fromKerala and North East States to Thailand for sex trade by Shillongbased H & Z International. Interim stay was given by Kerala HighCourt in 1995 and was made final in 2008.
PIL filed by Jananeethi in the Supreme Court against theconfirmation of capital punishment awarded to Mr. T.A. Josephby the Division bench of Kerala High court in a communallysensitized issue of land dispute that caused death of three people.The appeal resulted in reducing the death penalty to lifeimprisonment.
Our contributions as Change Maker
Jananeethi introduced the concept of ‘litigation-freezone’ for the first time in India and proved that it waspossible. The first litigation-free village in India made in 2000in Thichoor village of Varavoor Panchayat in Thrissur districtof Kerala.
Jananeethi started negotiated settlement of disputesthrough mediation and clinical legal counseling as alternatedispute resolution (ADR) in 1992.

Jananeethi introduced sensitization workshops in ruralareas through its association with the ICDS network. Womengroups on an average of 200 numbers in a year were trainedin elementary legal principles so that they could be watch-dogs of any untoward incidents on women at home and insociety.
Therapeutic Jurisprudence through psycho-legalcounseling process was introduced in Kerala by Jananeethifrom 2001 when it was unheard of in judicial proceedings.
Jananeethi monthly journal in Malayalam was startedfrom 1993, covering topics of socio, political and economicimportance judiciously and dispassionately.
Accreditations
Jananeethi is accredited with the Department of Social Justice,Government of Kerala and State Legal Services Authority. Itenjoys accreditation of Credibility Alliances, India under itsdesirable norms.
Jananeethi represents Non-profit organizations/voluntaryorganizations at many of the district level bodies onrecommendation of the District Collector.
Our Roadmap
Sustain core activity of providing legal aid and psycho-legalcounseling services, including helpline support to women,children and elderly in distress.
Function as a resource centre for research, intellectualexchanges and dissemination of news and views on humanrights, migrant labor, human trafficking, gender justice,environmental justice, sustainable developments, publichealth and social legislations;
Establish a training centre for para-legal activists, social workstudents, social activists, service providers and law studentswith residential facilities for 50 persons at a time;
A short stay home for women and adolescent youth in crisisand victims of violence;
Reclaim the vantage position as an operational hub for humanrights defenders, environmental activists and change makers.
