OPXBIO achieves key productionmilestone for BioAcrylic

OPX Biotechnologies (OPXBIO)announced another milestone that is amajor step towards commercializing itsmore-economical and renewablealternative to petroleum-based acrylicacid. The company successfullydemonstrated its fermentation processfor sugar-based acrylic acid (orBioAcrylic) in a 3000-litre fermenter runby the Michigan BiotechnologyInstitute. OPXBIO is working with DowChemical to bring BioAcrylic into the$10 bn market for acrylic used inproducts such as diapers, detergents,paints and adhesives.

Ashland introduces conditioningpolymer for more efficient,sustainable rinse-off products

Ashland Specialty Ingredients, acommercial unit of Ashland Inc, hasintroduced N-Hance 4572 conditioningpolymer. The product is a high chargedensity, high molecular weight polymersystem that is claimed to have betterwet-comb and oil-depositionperformance than current commerciallyavailable conditioning polymers. Whencompared with traditional cationic guar,the new offering is demonstrated toimprove the distribution and totaldeposition of silicone and natural oilssuch as jojoba oil and meadowfoamacross hair strands. N-Hance 4572conditioning polymer is the first in anovel series of conditioning polymersfrom Ashland that may be used as aplatform to ‘dial in’ conditioningproperties based on needs such asdistribution of oil across hair, oildeposition, combing performance andfriction value (hair softness).

Canada clears siloxane D5

Canadian regulators have endorsedthe continued use ofdecamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) inskin creams, antiperspirants,shampoos and other personal careproducts. D5 was found not to beharmful to the environment, and anybioaccumulation of the compounddoes not pose a risk to biodiversity.Cosmetic manufacturers use D5because it provides a nongreasy feelto skin creams, as well as bounceand shine in hair care products.

The European Parliament and theCouncil of the European Union, aftertransmission of the draft legislativeact to the national parliaments, havingregard to the opinion of the EuropeanEconomic and Social Committee,acting in accordance with the ordinarylegislative procedure, have adoptedRegulation (EU) No 259/2012 on 14Mar 2012. Regulation (EC) No648/2004 is hereby amended asfollows: in Article 1(2), the third andfourth indents are replaced, and afifth indent is added. Article 2 isamended. Limitations on the contentof phosphates and of otherphosphorus compounds are includedin original article. The Commissionshall be empowered to adoptdelegated acts in accordance withArticle 13a in order to introduceamendments necessary for adaptingAnnexes I to IV, VII and VIII toscientific and technical progress. The
