Demand
Established need for accessible schools data at all levels
Parents
Teachers / Administrators
Government
Donors / NGOs
Want a comprehensive school data picture
Data Interoperability
Matching OpenStreetMap and Kenya Open Data
Using open source tools
KOD issues: 7 years old, not always accurate
High confidence in community data
Bottom Up data exposes needs and gaps in government and civil society
information, and suggests way forward
Potential to guide donors

Citizen Data Collection
● 3 teams of 1 mapper, 1 photographer Local youth members of Map Kibera
● Location collected w/ GPS● More than 50 attributes surveyed on
each school, based on stakeholders● Photos of each school● Edited and uploaded into OpenStreetMap
Data Collected by Map Kibera (Based on stakeholder concerns)
* Name* Contact (email, phone)* Type (primary, secondary, vocational, nursery)* Operator, and type* Village Location* GeoLocation* # of pupils, male and female, age ranges* # of teachers, male and female, TSC employed, TSC accredited* Fees* Boarding or dayschool* Building material, roof material, # of floors* Vehicle Accessibility* Electricity availability, toilets* Programs (feeding, sports, etc)* Affiliated school for examination
Observations from data collection:
Data collection is opportunity to advocate, and bring schools into
process.
Some data is easier than others (fees, images)
Results
> 250 schools> 50K students> 2K teachers
Outputs
Lessons to date
Potential new paradigm emerging:
Local citizen data collection enriches and checks available information,
builds community ownership, increases data use
Future Outlook
● Scale up to county level and beyond● Work more closely with MoE● Feedback Mechanism for parent
opinion● Schools take ownership of page and
contribute info● Take approach to new sectors
What we’re looking for:
● Funding support to scale up● New data sets to include● Partners in implementation and
network building
