The Oculus Rift Kickstarter project launched on August 1, 2012. It was announced with a YouTube video, and was widely reported in the tech-press. All charts included here begin on this date an continue through April, 1, 2014. This first chart does not differentiate between press coverage and VR content, but includes all Oculus Rift related video content on YouTube, as indexed by Google. Because the Facebook acquisition deal was announced on March 25, 2014, and the final data-point is April 1, 2014 (which at the time of publication, is identical to that of March 1), it is presumed that little of the content surge due to the acquisition has yet been factored in.

Ambient Noise: Because YouTube does not provide tools to search by date-range, but Google search allows for both date-range and domain level search, data was collected using Google. Because Google search captures all of the text on a page, not just video titles, and bacause older videos can contain links to newer ones in their margin, many results are from secondary margin links instead of the main video title. To account for this, a series of random searches were performed with date ranges prior to the Oculus Rift announcement. These were indeed found to have newer content in their magin links. They averaged out to 25000, which has therefore been noted here with a gray threshhold to show ambient noise in the results, but are still included to show clarity. This methodology is repeated, on the following chart.

As the date range was capped on both the front and back, and neither “Oculus” nor “Rift” were included in the search string, no ambient noise is messured in this graph.

This graph attempts to show the trend line for stereoscopic 3D video content available on YouTube, beginning with the launch of the Oculus Rift, but without icluding them in the search string. With the date range capped on both the front and back, so as to only capture new videos, added since the time of Oculus Rift's launch. This should show the influence of the Oculus Rift’s launch on 3D content available, in general.

This graph attempts to seperate out 3D content from Oculus media coverage by introducing “3D” into the search string. While the results do fail to capture some content that does not include both “Oculus” and “Rift” in the name, results from using one or the other were found to have more noise. This seach string was therefore found to have the best reflection of Oculus specific 3D / VR content growth.

Ambient Noise: Being a more specific search, the ambient noise measured at 1150, is much lower on this graph.Note: An additional correction was made on the first datapoint. Results for August 1st measured 5040, this anomaly was seen to be a result of data bleeding over from the Kickstarter launch coverage and has been averaged out.
