Preschool One Book, One Denver
One Book 4 Colorado is modeled after the successful Preschool One Book, One Denver program originated by the Denver Preschool Program. Both programs stem from the idea that providing young children with access to books promotes early literacy and helps families serve as their children’s first and most important teachers.
Historically, there have been key events held throughout the week. Denver Events include readings at the Museum of Nature & Science, Art Museum, Denver Zoo and much more. The books theme is woven into preschool classroom curriculum and often local figures will read at schools as well.
Logistics: Why?
Project goals: Increase awareness of early literacy Encourage parents to read more to
young kids Make reading fun for young kids Give 4-year-olds a book!
Logistics: When? Where?
Books to arrive: mid-late April Book giveaway: May 6-20 Denver Preschool Program preschools Statewide: public libraries, Reach Out
and Read Colorado clinics
Logistics: How?
Getting your books
There are two options about how you’ll receive your books:
Direct Ship Couriered Books
Preschool distribution sites: you will receive an email with more information
For clinics: Be on the lookout for information via email about how your clinic will receive your books. You can always contact your Regional Coordinator (Carol, Mary or Meredith) for more information.
For Preschools: Contact Ellen For Libraries: Contact Beth
Giving your books
For clinics: One Book 4 Colorado books are IN ADDITION to your normal Reach Out and Read books.
For this reason: You DO NOT need to track them in
the same way as your Reach Out and Read books
You DO NOT need to give them out only at Well Child Checks
Giving your books
For clinics continued: These books are for any 4 year old that visits
your clinic during the OB4CO Week in May. Any 4 Year Old Means:
Any sibling Any 4 year old WCC gets the OB4CO book
PLUS their ROR Book Any sick visit
If you run out of OB4CO Books, please contact your local library first, and then contact the Colorado Coalition.
One Book 4 Colorado in the Classroom
The book provides a great opportunity for a themed circle time or to integrate the theme into your classroom curriculum
Lesson Plan contests are a great way to engage teachers.
Include Event information in Friday folders to help families integrate literacy at home.

Events
Denver Health Events as an Example All 11 Denver Health locations partnered
with local preschools and had local celebrities (city council members, mayor etc.) read to the kids and then each received a copy of the book.
Does anyone else want to share stories about OB4CO event(s) at their clinic last year?
Curriculum/Template for an event-at your clinic
Contact your local library and see what events they are doing!
Contact a local preschool/child care center and see if you can coordinate an event
Even having the Medical Provider read in the waiting room is fun!
Curriculum/Template for an event-at your clinic
Arrange for 30min event Have reader read the story Distribute the books Provide a small snack
For a longer event, have an activity for the kids to do: a coloring sheet with a duck or a bike on it. Talk about bike safety.
Using the book:
Ideas to talk about and model for parents how to use the book at home:
Animal Sounds (Cow, Sheep, Duck etc.) Healthy Living-playing outside, being
active Do what makes you happy! The duck
rides a bike, even though other animals think it’s silly because he likes it
Bike safety—the duck isn’t wearing a helmet
