The Grand Mommy Wars
Call it the echo grandbaby-boom! 4 Library
staffers have new grandbabies this year, plus
Tammy’s 2nd is due in Dec. and Sara’s 2nd in
early Feb. Kristin is a grandma too, so we’re
all jockeying for vacation time to spend
hugging these young ’uns.
The following comments really hit home with me, as the NPCC Library works to incor-
porate the digital world while maintaining a physical library.
"There's such a huge difference between a digital and physical library," Stripling says,
explaining that in a library collection, there are a range of titles with different perspec-
tives right next to each other. But on the Internet, websites typically offer one point of
view and often link to other sites with similar views. So unless
kids have the right research skills, they won't see a broader per-
spective. "It's this whole idea of the filter bubble-we get trapped
into one point of view on the Internet and we don't develop em-
pathy for other points of view, and so we make judgments based
on narrow perspectives. Empathy is an important 21st century
skill." from Barbara Stripling, a U of A graduate and former school
librarian in NW AR, now professor at Syracuse University's School of
Information Studies (iSchool).
The Arkansas Library Association Confer-
ence (ARLA) was held in Little Rock on
September 24-27. This year’s conference
was especially fun as it marked the 100th
anniversary of ARLA. We talked shop with other librari-
ans, met vendors, were inspired by new products and tech-
nology, picked up some great ideas to bring to NPCC, and
enjoyed the ducks at the Peabody!
NPCC Library Director Sara Seaman presented a program,
Money Smart Week @ Your Library at this year’s Confer-
ence. Sara reviewed our first MSW program and her up-
coming plans for this year’s event April 21-28.
Brenda Van Dusen, Multi-Media Specialist, also enjoyed
the conference. Brenda is very active as Treasurer of the
Arkansas Library Paraprofessional Division (ALPS) and
assisted with conference audio-video equipment needs.
