PASTOR APPRECIATION DAY:
Pastor Appreciation Day is a special time that congregations set aside each year to honor their pastors and pastoral families for the hard work, sacrificial dedication and multiple blessings provided by these special people. It is also important to
remember that appreciation, affirmation and prayer support of our spiritual leaders is appropriate throughout the
entire year.

Pastor Appreciation Day By Bishop Doyle Marley, Conference Superintendent October 4 is a VERY SPECIAL day across the IPHC as we celebrate Pastor Appreciation Day. The Word of God teaches us that we are to “…give honor
to whom honor is due…” and I am confident that all of us can agree that if anyone deserves special honor it is those who faithfully serve as our ‘Pastor’. I want to encourage every congregation to see that the entire month of October is a special time for your Pastor and family. If you will go to the IPHC website www.iphc.org and visit the Discipleship Ministry page, you will find detailed information on this special emphasis including a list of ’70 Ways to Honor and Bless Your Pastor’. I challenge you to make this a Pastor Appreciation Day that your Pastor and family will remember for a long time to come. As always, if the set date (Oct. 4) is not convenient use any Sunday in the month of October for this special time of celebration and recognition. Let me say ‘thank you’ in advance for what I believe you will do to honor these special servants of the Lord.
LET’S HONOR OUR PASTORS!
Are Your Seniors Suffering From Senioritis?
(Not the 18-‐year-‐old High School seniors but the 60 – 80 year old senior adults) Some noticeable symptoms of this malady may be: • Withdrawal from involvement in the
work/ministry of the church • Expressed feelings of being unneeded/sidelined • Opting for arm-‐chair TV ministry instead of
church attendance Just what is “senioritis” and what can be done about it? Do you remember those feelings as an 18-‐year-‐old high school senior of having had enough of school and just wanting to be free from the demands of it all? That’s senioritis, and these same feelings can have a similar effect on those in our congregation reaching retirement age. Those faithful workers who have taught Sunday School, served as deacons, ushers, etc. for the past 40 years and are now moving into a different season of life. They’ve been there and done that; so what do we as a church have to offer them now? We provide a ministry specifically designed to meet the needs and wants of these senior adults.
With our country’s aging population, most of our churches are blessed with a high percentage of members in this age bracket, so let’s tap into the wealth of resources this group represents. Sound daunting? It isn’t (teenagers are much more challenging)! With the varied activity level of seniors today, the focus of this ministry should be to address the needs most common to all, such as: loneliness (loss of spouse / friends), lack of purpose (retired from workplace) and fear (concern for the future).
Here’s a glimpse of how we developed our Senior Adult Ministry. First, our Pastor sought out interested senior adults willing to serve as director and committee members. He then shared his ministry vision with us and turned us loose with a promise of support both financially and advisory. As a committee we began by choosing a name, “Prime Timers”;
adopting a motto “Redeeming the time” (Ephesians 5:16); and developing a mission statement “to include and involve all of our senior adults in the life and ministry of the church”. We then established a set time for our meetings, as consistency is a must for us seniors to arrange our busy schedules around babysitting grandchildren, doctor’s appointments and our own forgetfulness. Most importantly our meetings always include the three “F’s”: fellowship, fun and food. We make this a time to chat together, to laugh and participate in some fun activities, to share in a devotion and to enjoy a tasty lunch, topped off with dessert of course! Day trips to places of historic interest, to quaint downtown shopping areas, to a picnic in the mountains, to community theatre programs are just some of the things we do. Oh and let’s no forget to mention, a stop at the DQ is the perfect ending of a great day! During the winter months we warm up by competing in “Senior Game Day” and during the heat of the summer we cool off with a “homemade ice cream social”. To spark interest and encourage regular attendance we may invite a surprise guest speaker or an old timey singing group; plan an eclectic themed luncheon; or gather items for a silent auction or a white elephant swap. One highlight of our year is the recognition of our Prime Timer of the Year whom we honor at a special Senior Adult Sunday service and luncheon. During this service the recipient is presented a plaque and acknowledged by their church family for their faithful service and lifetime commitment to the Lord’s work. This is just some of what we have done, but the question is “what will you do to develop a ministry for your senior adults?” In all of our planning, I’ve discovered a key element to the success of this ministry. It’s communication – not just passing on information such as dates and times, but reminding each other of our individual value and worth in the kingdom of God. The Church is all-‐inclusive not exclusive and we all have a place and purpose to fulfill regardless of age. As leaders we would do well to encourage our senior adults to adopt the philosophy of Yogi Berra as he exclaimed, “It ain’t over, till it’s over!” Sounds good to me!

The Cost Of A Good Nights Sleep The sleep industry is booming in America. Analysts have reported the accumulated cost of a good night's sleep in America reached over 32 billion in 2013. This includes pills, products, medical devices, sleep labs, sleep consultants and a host of other purported remedies. Today that figure will rise much higher. I'm not dismissing the legitimate need for some of this in many medically based cases. However, I do want to point out a remedy that many of us may have overlooked. Sleep is God's idea. He created us in such a way that one third of our day, every day, is reserved for renewal and rejuvenation through sleep. Psalm 4:8..."In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. " Proverbs 3:24…"If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet." Psalm 127:2..."It is vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved, sleep." Sleep is not a formula; sleep is a focus. "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on
thee."(Isaiah 26:3) We may close our eyes and sleep knowing that God never closes His. He is always watching over us and protecting us and, who knows, maybe even resolving the issue that loomed so large the day before. If we awake during the night with anxious thoughts, why not refocus our thoughts by reading portions of Scriptures to settle us. The cost of a good night's sleep may be as simple as a surrendered heart and a focused mind. Can we trust him tonight? I hope so… Sweet dreams.

A seventh grade biology teacher was teaching his class about the flow of blood. To illustrate his point he asked his class, ““Why is it that if I would turn upside down, my face would turn red since the blood would flow to my head, but when I stand upright my feet don’t turn red?” He was taken aback when a boy blurted out, “that’s cuz your feet aint empty!”.
Every pastor knows the feeling. The living, powerful Word of God is on your desk, books surround you, and you have access to unlimited resources on the Internet. Yet you have that gnawing feeling deep down—“I’m empty!” Your heart is full with a love for God and the people you serve, yet once again you’re bombarded with feelings of anxiety about what to preach this coming Sunday. You’ve been busy all week laboring for the Lord, yet you know that Sunday you’ll stand before a congregation with high expectations of a powerful and practical message from the Bible. Like a Drill Sergeant screaming in the ear of a new recruit in boot camp that inner voice yells, “Sunday’s coming!” But your “thought box” is empty. One way to silence that shrill voice series of sermons. One valuable resource for ideas for a sermon series is auditing a course in the BMI.
For fifteen years the Cornerstone Conference has been providing quality training in the various areas designed to posture ministers toward the goal of maximum effectiveness. The primary purpose of the BMI is to serve ministerial candidates who are in the process of securing their credentials; however, the BMI is an excellent resource for satisfying the required Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) required of all ministers, with the exception of retired ministers (see Article IV, Clergy, section “C,” Minister’s License, item l, page 179 of the 2013-‐2017 International Pentecostal Holiness Church Manual). Any minister or layman may audit any of the classes offered in the BMI. The cost of auditing a course is only $20.00, plus the investment in the textbook and study guide.
Each class offered through the BMI is designed to provide a sturdy foundation upon which the minister can continue to build. I encourage all of our current pastors to access the remaining class schedule, and consider auditing a class from time to time. You will benefit from the material covered, and be a blessing to other aspiring ministers.
Every class is important to the overall curriculum requirements for completion of the program. Yet several of our upcoming classes would be advantageous to the ministry context of all of our pastors.
YOU CAN’T RUN ON EMPTY!
Let me suggest at least three: Perhaps no area of life has come under the assault of Satan, more than has the family. In November a class will be offered on the Biblical basis for effective ministry to the families in the local church and community. In January, we offer a class on the Book of Acts. This class is strategically scheduled to serve as a reference to any pastor who desires to challenge his congregation to be an effective witness through the power of the Holy Spirit. The third of Seven Core Values of the IPHC will be emphasized in 2016, which deals with the subject of holiness. We will offer a study in the Book of Leviticus in February. A fundamental aspect of the Pentateuch, Leviticus emphasizes stresses the definition and application of what it means to be a separated people. Finally, in a time when worldliness is finding inroads into the church through its philosophies, pursuits, and preoccupations, your congregation would be benefited from a study in the Book of Ecclesiastes. We plan to offer a class on the Book of Ecclesiastes in April 2016.
Hey busy pastor, take a glance at your pulpit ministry dashboard. Are you running on empty? Do you sense your heart is full, but your mind is empty? Why not access the class schedule on the conference website, and make your plans to audit one or more classes in the near future?

effectiveness.”

CONGRATULATIONS TO D. J. KNIGHTEN: Honor Gold Medal of Achievement Recipient
On Saturday afternoon, August 8, 2015, Expedition Ranger D. J. Knighten of the Triangle Christian Center Outpost in Raleigh received the Honor Gold Medal of Achievement, the highest advancement and leadership award honor in Royal Rangers! We congratulate D.J. who is the first ever in the IPHC to attain this level (and only a few have received the Honor GMA in the Assemblies of God)! The Honor GMA represents the pinnacle of achievement in the Royal Rangers! The requirements for this prestigious award include earning the highest award in each age group (Ranger Kids Gold Trail, Discovery Rangers Gold Eagle, Adventure Rangers Gold Medal of Achievement and the Expedition Rangers E3 Award), read the entire Bible, demonstrate ability to present the plan of Salvation and be an active member of a Royal Rangers Outpost for at least five years! D.J.’s accomplishments include numerous leadership positions in the Outpost, serving on the Cornerstone Conference staff and leadership positions in numerous Ranger Training Academies, etc.
The Ceremony was well attended – one of the largest I’ve seen. Guests included the IPHC National Cmdr. David Moore, IPHC Deputy Nat. Cmdr. and Cornerstone Conf. Cmdr. Michael Hubbard, NC District AG Director Brady Allen, representatives from the Governor’s Office, IPHC National FCF VP Jerry “Son Chaser” Overstreet and the special guest speaker Cmdr. David “Bent Knee” Marshburn! It was also great to see so many of D.J.’s family and many friends present along with the committed church family and Pastors Jim Whitfield and Joel “Shepherd Crook” Whitfield! D.J. received many gifts and presentations including his gift (from his family) of a black powder rifle kit and a meticulous hand made shooter’s box as made and presented by D.J’s Granddad! D.J. gave a wonderful speech sharing his gratitude for what Royal Rangers, the Honor GMA, his Family and God means to him. He also shared his commitment to the future in all he may do for God! The highlight of the Ceremony was the receipt and pinning of his Honor GMA by his Mother Maria and Father
Eddie Knighten. A wonderful time of refreshment and fellowship ended the day including viewing of a very well done display of D.J.’s Royal Ranger and personal journeys! We congratulate D.J for this incredible, committed and honorable award of the Honor GMA! If your church does not include Royal Rangers for your boys, please contact either the Conference DM Department or Michael Hubbard, Cornerstone Conference Commander at [email protected] or 919-‐467-‐6960, for details on how to get started, training, etc. I look forward to seeing you all at future Royal Ranger activities.

Be part of CORNERSTONE BIBLE QUEST! By Mrs. Sue Goins
The purpose of Bible Quest is to implant the Word of God in the hearts and lives of students, empowering them to live victorious lives with the Sword of the Spirit (Matthew 16:18; Hebrews 4:12). The format of Bible Quiz tournaments provide students with a powerful incentive for the study of God’s Word. The goals of Bible Quest are to make the Word a practical reality in daily living and to involve maximum participation in Bible Quest competition. Bible Quest competition ranges from the Local, Conference, and National levels.
What an exciting year for Teen Bible Quest this year! We are studying the book of Acts. A few years back we had a group of teens that studied the book of Acts during Bible Quest and the biggest benefit that year for the team was that most of the quizzers received the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-‐edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints
and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12
The rewards of doing Bible Quest will exceed anything that you can image, so let me (Sue Goins) know you want to start a team and she will help you get started. You can contact her at 336-‐427-‐3551 or [email protected].
