Magnus Carlsen of Norway on 23 November 2014 won FIDE World Chess Championship 2014 played at Sochi,

Russia. He defeated Viswanathan Anand of India with a score of 6.5 – 4.5. Out of a total of 12 games played, he won

the Game 2, Game 6 and Game 11. Anand only managed to win the Game 3 whereas Game 4 and Game 5 were drawn

between the two. Thus, Carlsen became the first player to score 6.5 points to win the FIDE World Championship. With

this he retained the FIDE World Championship which he had won in Chennai in 2013. In 2013 he had won the game in

just 10 games against Anand.

Switzerland defeated France to win 1st-ever Davis Cup of Tennis

Switzerland won its first Davis Cup Tennis title after defeating France by securing three-one lead at Lille Stade Pierre

Mauroy. Switzerland led by Roger Federer on 23 November 2014 defeated France to win their first-ever Davis Cup of

Tennis. Swiss tennis team defeated French team by 3-1 in the finals played at Lille Stade Pierre Mauroy, France. With

this win, Switzerland became the fourteenth nation to win the Davis Cup in the competition’s 115-year history.

The Davis Cup 2014 between France and Switzerland will go down in history as the Cup that witnessed world record

crowd of 27228 viewers. Following the Davis Cup 2014 results, the top three teams are: Czech Republic, Switzerland

and France.

About Davis Cup

The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis. It is run by the International Tennis Federation

(ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format. The competition began

in 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States. The women's equivalent of the Davis Cup is the

Fed Cup. Australia, the Czech Republic, and the United States are the only countries to have held both Davis Cup and

Fed Cup titles in the same year.

Union Government approved launch of Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana

Union Government on 20 November 2014 approved launch of Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DUGJY) to

provide access of electricity to rural households across the country. A decision in this regard was taken at the Cabinet

meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

The Union Cabinet also decided to merge the ongoing Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) with

DUGJY scheme. Components of the Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) includes -

- To separate agriculture and non agriculture feeders facilitating judicious rostering of supply to agricultural and non-

agricultural consumers in rural areas

- Strengthening and augmentation of sub transmission and distribution infrastructure in rural areas, including metering

of distribution transformers/feeders/consumers

The two components of the scheme will be implemented at an estimated cost of 43033 crore rupees which

includes required budgetary support of 33453 crore rupees from Union Government over the entire implementation

period. Apart from this, the balance work related to rural electrification as per CCEA’s approval of August 2013 with

the norms of the ongoing scheme of RGGVY in the 12th and 13th plans will be subsumed in DDUGJY as a distinct

component for rural electrification. For this purpose the CCEA has already approved the scheme cost of 39275 crore

rupees including budgetary support of 35447 crore rupees.

This outlay will be carried forward to the new scheme of DDUGJY in addition to the outlay of 43033 crore rupees.

The scheme would help in -

- Improvement in hours of power supply in rural areas

- Reduction in peak load

- Improvement in billed energy based on metered consumption and

- Providing access to electricity to rural households

As per the cabinet decision, the process of sanction of projects will commence immediately and for execution, the

projects will be awarded by States Discoms/Power Departments. The projects shall be completed within 24 months

from date of award. Apart from this, the Cabinet also approved a North Eastern Region Power System Improvement

Project for six north eastern states for strengthening of the Intra-State Transmission and Distribution System. These

states are Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tnpura and Nagaland. The project will be implemented at an

estimated cost of about 5111 crore rupees. The project is a major step towards meeting the national objective of Power

to All. It will also increase the per capita power consumption in these States.

Rampal Singh Jatin arrested by Haryana Police from his ashram in Hisar

Rampal Singh Jatin was in news because he was arrested by Haryana Police on 19 November 2014 from his fortified

Satlok Ashram in Hisar of Haryana. He is famous as Sant Rampal and is a self-styled Godman.

He was arrested after two weeks of intense attempts by police to arrest him that involved rioting in which scores of

persons were injured and around 5 persons were killed. He was arrested under fresh cases of sedition, criminal

conspiracy and rioting. Rampal will be produced in the Haryana and Punjab High Court on 20 November 2014. He was

booked after the Haryana and Punjab High Court directed the Haryana Government and Police to arrest Rampal

without fail after he defied court orders thrice in contempt case citing bad health. His non-appearances forced the court

to issue non-bailable warrants against him. Problem that led to Court order and his arrest -

Rampal in 2006 criticised Dayanand Saraswati, the founder of Arya Samaj his criticism led to violent clashes at

Karontha ashram between the followers of two sects, in which an Arya Samaj follower was killed. Following the death

of the follower of Arya Samaj, Rampal was charged with murder, and was arrested but was released in 2008 after

spending several months in jail.

About Rampal Singh Jatin

- Rampal is an Indian Kabir panthi religious leader and the founder of a dera (socio-religious movement), which is

popular in Haryana

- He claimed that he was a spiritual successor of Kabir, while some of his followers considered him an incarnation of

Kabir

- He was famously addressed as Jagatguru Rampal JI Maharaj by his supporters

- His sect prohibits temple visits, idol worship, untouchability, adultery and vulgar singing and dancing among other

things

- Rampal was born on 8 September 1951, in Dhanana village near Gohana town of Haryana's Sonipat district and came

from a family of farmers

- In 1999 he established an ashram in Karontha in Haryana's Rohtak district but was forced to vacate his ashram

following clashes with religious groups in July 2006

Hyderabad to have H-TRIMS to tackle traffic problems

H-TRIMS project was in news in November 2014. Hyderabad has found an intelligent way to manage the traffic

problems in the city in a smart way by using H-TRIMS (Hyderabad Traffic Integrated Management System).

H-TRIMS, the first of its kind intelligent signaling system in the country comprises intelligent timers and vehicle

detectors, the integrated traffic management system and will primarily work on solar power. The H-TRIMS is aimed at

providing commuter-friendly traffic atmosphere and a state of the art multi-purpose technology for the police, as a shot

in their arm. The intelligent signals will adjust themselves automatically by the traffic density and will provide easy

passage and warnings to other commuters in other places in case of excess traffic.

The H-TRIMS project was taken up in August 2012 after Dilsuknagar Blasts and has been conceptualised and

indigenously developed by Bangalore based Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

At present the intelligent signals have been placed at 221 out of 227 junctions in Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
