The easterly mule taking a beating. Note
the height of the water under the head
pier.
The strong winds moved a winter
stored easterly gangway across the
head pier. The yardarm listed significantly in the
gusts but survived, amid concerns.
One boat broke its mooring and sailed into
an easterly slip, sideways causing damage
to the boat and marina. Two other boats
were blown up onto the airport and one
dragged its mooring into the channel.

Attention CPYC Members
As you all know, I run a program of sending care packages to
our men and women serving in the military in Iraq, Afghanistan,
Kyrgyzstan and other hot spots in the middle east. Perhaps they
are aboard a ship in the Pacific Ocean, the North Sea or the Per-
sian Gulf. Maybe on guard duty on the DMZ in Korea or as an
embassy guard in a foreign country. Next month marks the be-
ginning of the holidays. If you have a family member . . . . . .
brother, niece, uncle, brother in law or a close friend serving in
that area, let me know. Perhaps I could send them a little holiday
joy, a Christmas Tree or a care package from Winthrop.
Send me an email at [email protected] with their name,
address, branch of service, rank etc. You could also tell me a
little bit about them, age, hometown, MOS or military occupa-
tion. If they have a favorite snack or sports team, let me know
and I'll put a smile on their face, a smile in their heart and a smile
in their stomach.

Nominating Night
November
All members with voting rights are requested to attend the Nomi-
nating Night Meeting on November 28th at 7PM. The primary
purpose of this meeting is to elect a Nominating Committee. As
outlined in the By-Laws, Article VII, Section 2. “A Nominating
Committee of five members shall be elected each year by paper ballot.
Names for election to said Committee shall be accepted from the floor
only. Of the five members elected, the one with the greatest vote shall
serve as chairman.”
The election of the Nominating Committee is very important
because it is the Nominating Committee that compiles a slate of
candidates to fill the offices of Commodore, Vice Commodore,
Rear Commodore, Treasurer, Secretary, Board of Directors, and
Audit Committee, all elected annually. Election to the Board of
Directors occurs as terms expire.
Usually the Nominating Night Meeting falls on the third
Wednesday in November except when that date is the night be-
fore thanksgiving, as it is this year. Accordingly, the meeting is
the week after Thanksgiving.
Information on other matters to come before the membership will
be announced closer to the meeting. You are encouraged to at-
tend.
The Barge replacing approximately 20 piles which have
broken over time had been hard at work the week of October
22nd. The picture above really shows just how big the barge
is in relation to the club house. The tide was quite low when
the picture was taken.
The Children’s Halloween Party was a tremendous success.
About 50 beautiful costumed children decorated goodie
bags, did the limbo, paraded their costumes and watched a
Halloween movie. Many thanks to Janine Stanton and
Shannon Girard for their efforts. Enjoy the costumes below.

A Tribute to Tink Martin By Richard Honan
I'd known Anita “Tink” Martin for fifteen or more years. She always used to tell me
that my mother and father were the first people to greet and welcome Tink and her hus-
band, Bill when they moved back to Winthrop several years ago. She loved the fact that
I built wooden boats and promoted boat
building with my family and friends. I
loved to tell her about my trips with my
grand children out to Snake Island or the
hazardous winter conditions we encoun-
tered in the Hull Snow Row (named for
Winthrop's own, Edward Rowe Snow) I'd
always make a point of rowing or pad-
dling by her house on Washington Ave-
nue to show off my latest boatbuilding
project.
She was an advocate for the clam
digger, lobsterman, fisherman and any-
one else that made their daily bread from
the sea. She just had it in her blood, the
need to get out the news about anything marine oriented, whether it be the latest infor-
mation about the dredging of Winthrop Harbor or the arrival of the tall ships. She be-
lieved that children in Winthrop, besides learning english and math, should have the
opportunity to learn how to build a boat. That Belle Isle Marsh was not only a place to
visit for a nature walk, but was even more important as an environmental site for mi-
grating birds and clam beds that helped filter the sea water. She loved the beauty of the
lighthouses that dot our coast and the history that went along with them. Whether she
was writing about the Boston Harbor Islands, Snake Island or Belle Island Marsh, she
always made a point of highlighting those people who worked behind the scenes to en-
sure that these treasures will be there for future generations. I think her biggest disap-
pointment was the fact that Winthrop had no Clam Warden. She will be forever missed!
To Tink - May the road rise up to meet you, May the wind always be at your back,
may the sun shine warm upon your face and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until
we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
(Editors Note: Tink was a great supporter of CPYC and of the Windjammer by adding
our events to her weekly column and by making references to the Windjammer. It will
be very strange not to send her an issue this month.)

Youth sailing wrapped up an-
other successful sailing season
on August 17th with a year -end
pier party. (Pictured on left)
The party was a big hit and en-
joyed by everyone. As is our
tradition the season concluded
with a "fun week". The older
kids enjoyed a trip to George's
Island and a pool day while the
beginner class enjoyed swim-
ming and kayak races. The pro-
gram ended with our annual
pirate day and scavenger hunt.
It was another successful season on the water for our sailors. Emma and Ally Montgomery placed first in the Championship Fleet at
the N10 Open and Town River Regatta's. Marc and Joey Montalto won the Intermediate fleet at Town River.
The 2012 N-10 Midgets
Regatta was held on July
24th and 25th at the Med-
ford Boat Club. 55 boats
participated in this two day
regatta, with six from
CPYC. (Pictured to the left)
Emma and Ally Mont-
gomery finished in second
place. Congratulations to
10 year old Christopher
Rodriguez (right) won the
Merriman Trophy for the
best sailor 11 or under rac-
ing in the regatta. Christo-
pher actually finished 20th be-
cause he did not race for the last
two races, It was so windy
that half the fleet did not race. He
did well enough the first day to win
the Merriman!
Over the years, there have been a
number of sailors from Cottage
Park that have won this trophy in-
cluding (pictured to left) Kayla
Famolare, Emma Montgomery,
Christopher Rodriguez, Mark Montalto,
Celia Moriera.
Our beginner class continues to show tremendous improvement and enthusiasm for the program. Both Tuesday Twilights ( run by Mark Montalto) and Tiller Time helped strengthen the begin-
ners. CPYC hosted The Juniors Regatta for the second year in a row. We had one of the biggest fleets
ever with 16 sailors age 13 or older single- handing an N-10. 5 clubs were in attendance. It was a
beautiful day of racing and when all was said and done only one point separated 1st and 2nd. 1st
Ethan Cash WYC, 2nd Cecilia Moreira CPYC, 3rd Michael St. Jean CPYC. (Cecilia Moreira
pictured right sailing Lil' Rebel)
We had very good finishes at the N10 open, MAW and there was participation in our Hatch
Brown Series by many of our sailors. The program would not be possible without the hard work
of our instructors. All the instructors led by Lianne did a great job this year. The Youth Sailing
Committee would like to thank the Flag Officers and Board of Directors for their support and
assistance during the season. The program would not succeed without their support.

This month the Windjammer is spotlighting member and artist Frank Costantino. An
architectural illustrator of international note, he is also a watercolor artist. Often you
will see Frank on the head pier with his easel and paints capturing CPYC scenes. He
has been very generous donating works to our Make-A-Wish events over the years.
Frank will be having four shows around Boston November through January: THE FRAMER’S EDGE, 210 Quincy Ave., Braintree, MA Saturday, November 3, 5-7pm;

Regatta Committee Season Wrap Up
This past spring the club by-laws for the Regatta Committee were updated in line with
current racing practices. As a result , under the leadership of Chairman Mitch Wiest, a
more representative committee was formed and train-
ing sessions were offered to help train new volun-
teers. The committee hopes that the bank of volun-
teers will continue to increase in the future. Race
Committee volunteers are being given shirts to thank
them for their service and to wear when on race com-
mittee duty next year.
The Boston Harbor Rumble had a banner turnout with
52 boats participating. The Constitution Cup and JFK
regattas drew 26 and 27 boats respectively. The Make
-A-Wish Chase Race, One Design and Youth races were well attended with good rac-
ing. The Wednesday Night races concluded in mid September. Of the 15 scheduled
races, 3 had to be cancelled due to a lack of wind.
The CPYC Awards night will be held in conjunction with the Mass Bay Awards Dinner
on Friday November 16th, cocktails at 6:30 PM and dinner at 7:15 PM. Tickets are $30
pp. Reservation may be made online at www.massbaysailing.com or delivered to

The Bosun Reports —- The launch Windjammer went through a
major restoration this spring. No item was
left unchecked. Some feared that things
would not be put back together again.
The boat was restored successfully as
shown below.
In addition the Windjammer had to un-
dergo a USCG mandated stability test. This
test was performed by a qualified naval
architect during which barrels filled with
water were used to challenge the stability.
Thank you to Dean Fairbrother and Dave
Aloise for all of their hard work in the res-
toration and upkeep of the launch.
My apologies if I left someone out.

vice was provided on every day that it was
scheduled to run.

Anne and Paul Duval had a great month in France this last August. They flew the CPYC burgee on two boats they rented while there. The first boat was a Jenneau Sun Odys-sey 36 named OMER. ►They sailed this boat from La Trinite sur Mer to the islands of Houat, Hoedic, and Belle lle off the Quiberon peninsula on the coast of Brittany .
▲Their favorite anchorage on Houat.
On the Canal de Robine on the outskirts of Narbonne. ▼
▲Locking downstream on the Canal du Midi. Their German friend's son Marcel Horbach handled the stern line. Note the burgee flying off the stern with a makeshift flag staff. ▲
The second boat was the canal boat Normandie which they picked up in Trebes and mo-tored down the Canal Du Midi for a week with the final drop off in the city of Narbonne.

CPYC has lost a great lady with the pass-

much to the club with her smile and en-
thusiasm. She could light up a room.
Judy was always a supporter of activities
and a helper. She did so much for the
club. She was treasurer of ladies bowling
and raffle seller extraordinaire. Judy
was the innovator of the Ducky Regatta,
the Vehicles of Distinction, and Drop-in-

Our deepest condolences to Judy’s hus-
