Training Opportunities 2018
Domestic Abuse Awareness session – 3 ½ hours
This session will provide participants with an overview of domestic abuse. It will explore the different tactics of abuse and highlight the complex dynamics within an abusive relationship.
Indicators of abuse will be explored and risk factors considered.
Information will be provided on local and national support services, and resources will be available to take away from the session.
The session will be a mixture of presentation and informal group discussion. Video clips will be used throughout.
At the end of the session participants will
Be aware of the prevalence of domestic abuse Understand tactics of power and control Be aware of the indicators of domestic abuse Have an awareness of risk and be able to identify a variety of risk factors Know where to signpost a victim or perpetrator to get appropriate help
Training information
1. All training is free of charge 2. Choose the course and date from the list below and gain your managers
approval before applying3. Complete a booking form for each course requested and return to
[email protected] 4. There are limited spaces available on each session therefore bookings will be
taken on first come first served basis.5. Confirmation e-mails will be sent to confirm your place, once confirmation
received ensure this is booked in your diary. 6. If you have been allocated a place and then you are unable to attend, please
cancel as soon as possible to allow the place to be allocated to someone else.
7. Training will begin promptly at the start time and refreshments will be available on arrival only.

Domestic Abuse, Stalking, Harassment and Honour Based Violence (DASH 2009) – 2 hours
This session will provide participants with a working knowledge of the risk identification tool. The checklist is used to decide which victims of domestic abuse need to be referred to the MARAC process.
Information will be provided on local and national support services, and resources will be available to take away from the session.
The session will be a mixture of presentation, informal group discussion and working through the risk identification document.
At the end of the session participants will Have an understanding of how the DASH (2009) was developed Understand high risk circumstances and high risk injury Work through the tool question by question to understand why the questions
are asked Have an understanding of the procedures to refer a case to MARAC
The session will be useful for practitioners to understand how risk is identified even if you are unlikely to use the document

Forced Marriage (FM) & Honour Based Abuse (HBA)
Forced Marriage and Honour Based Abuse occurs in a number of different communities living in Wakefield District. It affects children and adults, women and also men, and has clear links to domestic abuse with lifelong consequences for victims. Sometimes victims themselves are not aware that what they are experiencing is abuse.
This session covers the background including relevant cultural factors. We will consider case studies and there will be opportunities for discussion and questions as well as clear information about safeguarding warning signs and responses.
Learning Outcomes
Define Honour based Abuse Define Forced Marriage Detect signs of Honour Based Abuse and Forced Marriage Describe honour, shame and culture Confidently ask questions and provide support Use the appropriate safeguarding pathways List where to get additional information, support and resources
Target Audience
This session is suitable for all staff working in HBA/FM practicing communities and practitioners with an interest in this area. The event will equip practitioners with an understanding of the key issues relating to HBA/FM and safeguarding.
