Imagine a world where you can be free. A place where no border can stop you achieving your dreams. A world made of skilled people prepared to understand
not just themselves but also others. A world where East and West are connected by admiration and success.
A world where everything is possible. Connecting Qatar is born out of this dream. Our aspiration is to become a bridge between different countries, to promote a symbiotic relationship with the aim of improving the quality of life in both countries, we couldn’t find a better option than to start with connecting Qatar and UK, but why?
These two have always boasted about having a special relationship which now proves stronger than ever. Qatar is not just the major supplier of energy to the UK but also has a diverse range of investments in the UK.
Being a recognized leader in the field of creativity and innovation, education and health, the United Kingdom is for Qatar not just a good friend but also a guide and constant font of inspiration. On the other hand, Oil and gas have made the Arabian Gulf State one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. Qatar, one of the top ten wealthiest countries in the world, now is the time to invest in the future. The time to invest in technology, education, and culture. The time to create our own Universities, our own Hospitals and our own businesses.
Combining experience and ambition is for us, a winning option. That is why we strongly believe that the UK and Qatar have a lot to learn and to discover from each other, and we WANT to be part of this adventure.
Kind Regards,

the Qatar econoMyDuring the past decade, Qatar has witnessed an incred-
ible economic transformation. A massive increase in oil and gas production has fuelled record economic growth, record government surpluses and record investment in energy, infra-structure and housing.
Over the past five years real gross domestic product (GDP) growth has averaged 17 per cent, resulting in the economy almost doubling in size.
As a result of this impressive economic performance Qatar is now the world’s richest nation on a per capita basis. This is set to continue and Qatar currently forecasts economic growth of about 16 per cent for 2011 and expects a budget surplus of $6.1 billion this fiscal year.
Qatar enerGy sector
Historically GDP growth has been fuelled by the huge expan-sion in the Qatari oil and gas sector. Qatar is today the world’s largest LNG exporter making it the major player in the industry.
In tandem with its LNG programme, Doha set its sights on becoming the world’s leading centre for the nascent gas-to-liquids (GTL) industry. In 2006 Oryx GTL, was inaugurated at ras Laffan with a design capacity of 34,000 barrels a day (b/d). It was joined this year with the start-up of the much larger Pearl GTL, which has a capacity of 140,000 b/d.
North field gas also underpinned a significant expansion in existing fertiliser, petrochemical and steel capacity as well as the establishment of an aluminium capability.
For the future of the oil and gas sector in Qatar, any future hydrocarbons investment decisions will not be made until the expiration of the 2015 moratorium on North Field development.
Qatar’s infrastructure sectorQatar is carefully planning a long-term strategy for
more gradual and sustainable growth under its National Development Strategy. Qatar’s future vision is focused on developing its non-hydrocarbon industries and infrastructure project activity will be the key driver of Qatar’s economy and real GDP growth going forward. The $114.5bn of current known and announced infrastructure projects underpins Qatar’s commitment to its diversification strategy.

railway work forms the largest portion of future projects

Geoff mee, Deputy CeO at Qatar railway Company confirmed at meeD’s meNA rail event that one of the key drivers for the company is the provision of the railway services for the FIFA 2022 World Cup and the Qatar Integrated rail Project (QIrP) budget is projected to be approximately QAr130bbn. The railway system needed for the World Cup is scheduled to be operational by 2020 and the complete railway system will be in place by 2026.

Qatar’s bid was based on a novel approach to hosting the event and dealing with its legacy. It calls for almost all key event facilities and venues to be located in a relatively compact area within a radius of 60km. Previous World Cup finals have involved venues in far more distant locations.
Doha is also committed to having a carbon-neutral World Cup. This is a major challenge in a country where summer temperatures can reach 50 degrees centigrade and air-conditioning
is necessary in June and July. The World Cup finals plan calls for seven host cities and 12 stadiums.
Three of the stadiums already exist and will be renovated, while nine will be constructed from scratch. The stadium construction and renovation budget has been set at about $3bn.
education city
education City will continue to provide considerable opportunities for contractors. As of mid-2011, a further $1.2bn-worth of contract work was either at the contractor prequalification or tendering stage.
In addition, there were a handful of other planned projects at the design stage that are scheduled to be
completed by 2014/15. These include a national data centre, an extension to the convention centre and a people mover.

both awards have confirmed the efforts of the government of Qatar in increasing the number of various tourist activities as well as sporting and cultural events held in the country. Although Qatar Tourism Authority is not looking for Qatar to be a location for mass tourism, rather QTA are focused on presenting the country as a world class destination, with high-quality services.
Qatar Tourism Authority does not seek to attract visitors just for the sake of getting more people. “We want to attract them and make them discover and catch our independent spirit and our progressive orientation, as Qatar is a destination that changes the way people see things. Qatar’s goal is to offer business oriented tourism, combined with unique leisure attractions.” As said on QTA website.
but why is Qatar ranked as a high quality conference and exhibition desti-nation? trevor McCartney, Director of business Development of the Qatar national Convention Centre, explains to Connecting Qatar UK all the reasons:

last several years. Its consistent high ranking in the Global Peace Index shows that Qatar is one of the safest countries in the world. We have seen a host of high-profile conferences, exhibitions and events such as 15th Doha Asian Games and the latest winning bid, FIFA World Cup 2022. Planners and buyers are seeking safe and stable destinations and Qatar certainly fits the bill.
• easy access – Qatar acts as the bridge between East and West wel-coming visitors from all around the world. Doha International Airport is
served by major international airlines which operate regular flights from Europe, US and Asia Pacific. Qatar is only seven hours away from the capital cities of Europe and Asia, and 13 hours from major destinations in North America. The award-winning national carrier; Qatar Airways, and other international carriers fly to the capital city of Doha from 102 destinations. The New Doha Interna-tional Airport is currently being built to accommodate 50 million travellers each year.
• people and language – Qataris are friendly and extremely hospitable. Qatar is a progressive and modern Arab state where English is widely spoken.
• sun-kissed country – Qatar enjoys sunshine and blue skies all year round.
• World-class accommodation – Doha has a host of luxury hotels of-fering the traditional Arab hospitality that Qatar is famous for. The luxury hotel chains are well represented as well as a range of three and four star properties.
• great food everywhere – In ad-dition to fresh seafood from the Arabian Gulf and traditional Arabian delicacies, Qatar offers a wide range of international cuisine ranging from Asian, Italian, French and Mediter-ranean.
• heritage and culture – Intrigu-ing growth and opportunities in the country and well-thought-out development provides an interesting background for delegates to explore. Unlike other cities in the region, Doha preserves its heritage and cul-ture to complement the modernity of the developing city resulting in a truly authentic Arabian experience. Mod-ern facilities and international service standards blend well with cultural and traditional values.
• According to the Qatar Tourism Authority, Qatar is already a hub for business and the MICE industry, with over 120 international conferences and exhibitions organized in 2010.
QTA plans to grow the tourism indus-try by 20% in the next five years.
What to do when the business time is over:
“Qatar offers unique middle eastern experiences for visitors. These include exciting desert safaris which showcase the remarkable landscapes of the sand dunes, opportunities to catch the grace-ful oryx in their natural surroundings, marvel at the beauty of pure-bred Arab race horses and sunset cruises on a tradi-tional dhow in Doha bay.” Trevor says.
The museum of Islamic Art is a must-see for those art enthusiastic as it is one of its kind in the world devoted exclusively to Islamic art. There is also the Arab museum of modern Arts where you can witness the expressions of Arab culture and creativity.
“A personal favourite of mine is the Souq Waqif, an authentic Arabian market which is home to local cuisines, local souvenirs, multi-coloured spices and is a hub of activities for locals and expats alike.
“ Trevor says and adds: “There is also a cultural village called Katara which features an opera house, an open-air amphitheatre, boutique shopping, amazing restaurants and a beach.” CQ

The UK is joint first with the USA in the world for Product market regulation (Pmr). It has the least barriers to entre-preneurship in the world and has the third fewest barriers to trade and invest-ment in the world.
sPrinGBoard uk
The UK is the number one gateway to europe, giving easy access to the 27
member states of the european Union, the world’s largest single market. It offers world-class transport links - with Heathrow’s new Terminal 5 , and more expansion planned for international airports, sea containers and the rail network. “London is an energy capital, an unequalled business and financial centre, and a global transportation hub”
ma Weihua, President, China merchant bank
uk LaBour Market
The UK’s labour market is one of the worlds’ most flexible.
This factor combined with its strong skills base in the UK is reflected in its excellent record of attracting major foreign investors from all over the world.
innovation, research and creativity in the uk
The UK is one of the world’s leading locations for commercial and academic r&D and creative industries such as film and TV production and computer gaming.
With world-class universities and research institutes involved in undertak-ing leading-edge r&D in all business sectors, many leading companies have already made considerable investments in r&D activities across the UK.
QuaLity of Life in the uk
UK residents enjoy a high standard of living, education and recreation. Publicly funded health care is free to all and there is a rich cultural heritage and abundance of leisure facilities. CQ

rBs is ‘Most innovative investMent Bank for structured finance’
The banker magazine has presented rbS with the global award of
‘most Innovative Investment bank for Structured Finance’. The banker magazine has presented rbS with the global award of ‘most Innovative Investment bank for Structured Finance’ in its Investment banking Awards 2011. The banker said that rbS had “reopened the market for a number of structures and found investors for wholly new structures”, citing a number of recent transactions: • Northern Rock - RBS reintroduced residential mortgage-backed securi-ties (RMBS) in the first deal for the client since its rescue in 2007. The Banker said the deal demonstrated
the strength of RBS’s investor educa-tion and interaction process.
• BAA - RBS’s long-term, capital-raising relationship resulted in the first non-investment grade issue by a European utility holding company. The Banker said RBS’s leadership in corporate secured debt demonstrated the close integration between structured finance and the wider debt franchise.
• Federal Deposit Insurance Company (FDIC) - RBS worked with FDIC for five months to structure a wrapped RMBS deal to dispose of assets from 17 failed institutions in order to replenish client funds without sell-ing collateral at a loss. The Banker attributed RBS’s ability to compete
with US competitors to its “stable, experienced structuring team”.
• Macquarie - RBS successfully placed the first-ever Australian asset-backed securities in the US, acting on behalf of Macquarie. The deal provided much-needed diversification for the client and paved the way for other Austalian issuers into the US markets. The Banker said investor education by the bank was vital to securing 30 investors who were unfamiliar with Macquarie’s auto lease structure.
richard bartlett, Head of Corporate DCm & risk Solutions, emeA, said:
“This is an excellent endorsement of our ability to innovate and collaborate in order to achieve results for our clients globally. Congratulations to all those involved in this high profile industry award win.”

Harrods estates, the luxury real estate arm of the Harrods targeting the Asian market.
Despite the current global economic forecast, Harrods estates has been witnessing renewed interest and record sales of its prime central London residential property to the South east Asian market over the last six months – a seminal factor in its decision to attend this pre-eminent real estate event, for the first time.
The weak pound and soaring domestic prices have made the London property market extremely attractive to South east Asian buyers. Whilst in mainland China, the authorities have restricted property speculators to dampen the market, in Hong Kong, prices have risen by 70 per cent in under two years.
Data from real estate service provider Savills, has shown that currently buyers from southeast Asia - and those from the mainland and Hong Kong in particu-lar - account for 35 percent of new development sales in London, making the Chinese the most active overseas buyers in the city.
Shirley Humphrey, Sales and marketing Director for Harrods estates, commented: ‘This is a particularly interesting time in the Central London property market. Whilst traditional
buyers and renters from North America and europe are finding their domestic economic situations constricting their property investment decisions, it is precisely the domestic environment in South east Asia that has shown a 15%
increase in sales to the region by Harrods estates over the last 6 months. In 2010, 40% of our sales came from Asia.
‘The time is now right for us to visit Hong Kong and we look forward to attending mIPIm Asia.’

Lusail City Prepares for the 2022 FIFA World Cup hoteLs, restaurants, stadiuMs and hosPitaLs to Be at the service of
the chaMPionshiP
Lusail City will ensure that all of its services are dedicated to hosting
the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with hotels, stadiums, parks and all other facilities designed and operated to ensure a successful championship. The total area of the Lusail City project is 38 square kilometers, including 28 kilometers of waterfront.
It will comprise marinas ith berthing for yachts and motorboats and several canals, and will feature 5 islands and 19 commercial and residential areas. Lusail City has been planned as a fully integrat-ed community with entertainment and residential areas and public venues – a city designed to be atractive to all. The Lusail City master plan specifies accom-modation for 200,000 residents, a workforce of 170,000, and a capacity to welcome 80,000 visitors in the highest standards. The city will have the facilities to provide its population with everything it needs to live in comfort. The city’s target population number is 450,000 people.
Lusail City will be home to a wide range of residential and commercial units. It will also contain 22 luxury hotels. As a place
both to live in and invest in, the city offers an extremely a¬ractive prospect. Lusail City has also invested a great deal of its resources in
sports facilities. There will be five
outstanding sports fields for training at Al-Wadi, Aqua Park and education City, and also the 86,000-seater Lusail National Stadium for major sporting events. The stadium will represent a quantum leap in terms of
football stadium design. Work in the Lusail City development first started with the marina district, which will eventually have 80,000 residents. The centerpiece is a marina with space for 90 boats, and entertainment options that will give residents access to all the
amenities of modern living. The marina district will be the largest of its kind in the Gulf region in terms of size and population. because the city is surrounded by water on all sides, there was an obvious demand for a water taxi service that would be both a practi-cal and fun means of ge¬ing around. There will also be a light-rail network with stations linking the different parts
of Lusail City. The company also recently begun work on the Fox Hills area of development, and has already a¬racted a significant number of investors.
