Honoring the key roles women have played in fly fish-ing history and the inspiration of these pioneers, the exhibit opened on June 11 with presen-tations by legendary women fly fishers. Among those appearing were Joan Wulff, “The First Lady of Fly Fishing,” Fanny Krieger, founder of the IWFF and the Golden West Women Fly Fishers, world record hold-
er Diana Rudolph, and instruc-tor/guide Lori-Ann Murphy. Presentations included fly-tying, the history of women’s fly fishing organizations, and casting workshops.
Other events upcoming at the museum include a Tag Sale on June 18, an Ice Cream Social on July 16, and “Angling and Art,” the annual benefit art auc-tion on July 30, featuring the work of New Hampshire water-colorist, David Tibbetts. As the clock ticks down for the 19th Annual Vermont-New Hampshire Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on July 23, Manchester, Vermont will be turning pink in preparation.
“We wanted to get some excitement going in our home base,” said Debbie Peretz, president of the Komen organiza-tion’s Vermont-New Hampshire affiliate. To date, 441 runners have signed up to participate in the 5K run.
With the “Paint the Town Pink” theme, race organizers are encouraging Manchester businesses to deck them-selves out in pink as they collect dona-tions. As an example, Peretz noted that Coach will display all-pink products in their display window.
“We hope it gets the spirit flowing,” she commented. Participating business-es will have pink receptacles for dona-tions, and anyone donating $1 or more will receive a pink bracelet. Businesses wishing to participate should call the affiliate office at 802-362-2733.
Several other new events are planned this year to get people in the spirit of the race. One of the most highly anticipated events is “Paws for the Cure” on Wednesday, July 20 at 6 p.m. Held at the Manchester Dog Park at the Manchester Rec Center, the event is a one-mile fun walk for owners and their dogs. Dog own-ers are encouraged to “pink up your pup” for the festivities. Prizes will be awarded for the “Pinkest Dog,” “pinkest” large dog and small dog, along with a prize for the dog and owner who look the most alike.
Also new this year is a Zumbathon on
Sunday, July 17 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Burr & Burton Academy cafeteria. Participants can come and go as they please from the event, which is presented by the Manchester Gym. Registration fee is $20, with tickets available at the gym on 320 Airport Rd. in Manchester.
Race week kicks off on Sunday, July 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with “Pink in the Park,” a fun afternoon at Factory Point Park that will feature the music of The Don’t Leave Band, pink hula-hoops and more. The park is located at the intersec-tion of Routes 11/30 and 7A.
Pre-race week events include “Music in the Meadow” on July 9 from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Motel in the Meadow in Chester. The event features the music of the Ninja Monkeys, the Stockwell Brothers and more. Suggested donation is $5.
Also on Saturday, July 9, the 5th Annual Tour de Bondville will take place at Stratton Mountain. Choose an 18, 25, or 50-mile bike ride, a golf outing, or run or hike up the mountain prior to the After Party. To register, visit www.tour-debondville.com.
Peretz noted that anyone who regis-ters for the race by June 23 will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift cer-tificate to the Sirloin Saloon in Manchester.
“These events are all fun, and a great way to get people thinking about the race,” said Peretz. “The race is a fun day, but it’s also a serious day,” she added, emphasizing the organization’s mission to find a cure for breast cancer.
For more information on the race, events, or to register, visit www.komen-vtnh.org or call 802-362-2733.

Rev. Clarke to talk on 'The Great Awakening' in 1761 Bennington
Learn about the early origins of Bennington, when the Bennington Historical Society presents Reverend Ken Clarke on Sunday, June 19 at 2 p.m. in the Ada Paresky Education Center, located on the second floor of the Bennington Museum. Rev. Clarke will discuss “The Great Awakening Comes to Bennington.” The event is free and open to the public.
When Bennington’s first settlers arrived in 1761, part of their mission was to form a new church. Those who organized Bennington’s Old First Church on December 3, 1762 were known as “Separatists,” as they were heavily influenced by the

“Great Awakening,” a divisive religious revival movement. Since the church played such a major role in community life, “the church was Bennington and Bennington was the church,” said, Ken Walling, his-torian at Old First Church.
The church organizers, who were also the proprietors of the new town of Bennington, built a plain pine meetinghouse in the center of the village, which served for public meetings, a school and for worship. They also built the green in front of the present church structure. The organization of the Bennington church showed how lessons of dissent resulted in innovation, and, in turn, pro-vided a way for religion to exist in a society full of change, said Walling.
Rev. Clarke is a lawyer and the minister at Old First Church in Bennington. Earlier in his ministry, Clarke served the his-toric First Church of Salem, Massachusetts, which was orga-nized in 1629 as the first Protestant church on American soil. He is a graduate of Bowdoin College, Vermont Law School and the Harvard Divinity School. For more information on this event, call 802-447-1571 or visit. www.benningtonmuse-um.org.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, June 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. for seven solo artists who will be exhibiting their work at the Yester House Galleries in the Southern Vermont Arts Center. The exhibit runs from June 18 through July 19.
“The art on display ranges from some of the best interpre-tations of traditional Hudson River School painting to the more abstract and conceptual work of Gary Haven Smith,” said Gallery Manager Jocelyn Grayson.
Featured artists include Elfriede Abbe, Elizabeth Allen, Virginia Bradley, Chris Malcomson, Ian Marion, Crickett Polis and Gary Haven Smith. Mediums used range from sculpture to photography to painting.
“This show cycle gives us the opportunity to pay tribute to the impressive achievements of long-time artist member Elfriede Abbe, while at the same time introducing us to the excit-ing work of a number a new artists,” Grayson said.

This new, wildly diverse col-lection examines the human experience from its bizarre fringes to the hopelessly medio-cre and desperately below aver-age. Populated with brilliant scientists, workaholic artists, depraved murderers and delud-ed losers, the stories in “You Think That’s Bad” are all whol-ly convincing and utterly fasci-nating.
Shepard is the author of six novels and three previous short story collections. His work is published regularly in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and McSweeney’s, among others. He lives with his wife and three children in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
On Saturday, June 18 at 7 p.m., Northshire Bookstore wel-comes beloved humorist Roy Blount Jr., who will be discuss-ing his new book, “Alphabetter Juice.” The author of 21 previ-ous books on subjects ranging from the Pittsburgh Steelers to what dogs are thinking, Blount is also a regular panelist on NPR’s “Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me!”
Blount’s new book builds on his 2008 work “Alphabet Juice,” unearthing a slew of factoids, fripperies and flabbergasting phenomena that will change the way your speak. He lives in western Massachusetts with his wife, the painter Joan
Griswold. The public is invited to an
author reception for Roy Blount Jr. at 6 p.m. at the bookstore’s Spiral Press Café. Tickets are $15 to the reception, which fea-tures light refreshments and
coffee, and is limited to 40 peo-ple. To purchase tickets, order online at www.northshire.com, or call the store at 802-362-2200. Mr. Blount’s reading at 7 p.m. is free and open to the public.

Learn about the revolutions that changed the concept of art when the Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning hosts art historian Bob Manning with “From Whistler to Warhol” on Wednesday, June 22 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Manchester, Vermont.
Manning’s slide lecture examines the time period from the 1870s to the 1970s, when a series of seemingly endless rev-olutions radically changed the idea of what is art. The presen-tation is a visual romp through Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and much more. Against a backdrop of world events, Manning will trace the influ-ences of one visual philosophy to the next.
Registration fee for this event is $15. To register, visit www.greenmtacademy.org or call Renee Bornstein at 802-362-1199.

Here she’s part of a team that’s been nationally recognized with the Press Ganey Summit Award for patient satisfaction four out of the last five years.
With two children and a husband who’s also an emergency physician, Janel leads a busy life. But she occasionally steals away to the Northshire Bookstore in Manchester—a Fortress of Solitude for our very own SuperDoc. Learn more about SVMC and our dedicated employees at svhealthcare.org.
