Active antennas will support future sites
Active antennas are the next logical step in building base stationsites. Flexi Multiradio Antenna System provides an attractivealternative to Flexi RF Modules/RRHs, or it can be used in
combination with these traditional Flexi RF units.
It is clear that active antenna systems will bring about a step-change in the evolution of radio networks and Nokia Networksis leading the way with its Flexi Multiradio Antenna System.Complementing our existing base station portfolio, the systemwill evolve to provide active support of various frequencybands, new radio systems and advanced technologies such asuser-based beamforming.

Boosting capacity
Flexi Multiradio Antenna System increases site capacity andcoverage with advanced features like vertical beamforming,2 x 2 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) and independent Txand Rx electrical tilting per frequency or RAT. Up to 160% uplinkand 70% downlink capacity gains and up to 30% coverageenhancement with beamforming compared to standard3-sector feederless BTS. Future active antenna developmentsare expected to support multiple columns and horizontalbeamforming, to further enhance the capacity.
Higher energy eciency and RF performance
Moving the RF function inside the antenna means that nocoaxial cabling is needed, avoiding components such as feedersand connectors. This reduces RF power losses signicantlycompared to conventional base station sites, raising overallenergy eciency to reduce electricity costs and carbonemissions for a much greener site.
Minimizing investments in the multiradio future
As multiple radio standards become available, existing basestation sites will need to be upgraded smoothly and quickly.Active antenna technology helps to protect base station siteinvestments by providing multiradio capability to support GSM/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA, LTE and LTE-Advanced.
Ready for multi-band sites
To meet the booming demand for mobile communications,a raft of new spectrum is becoming available worldwide.Nokia Flexi Multiradio Antenna System combines active andpassive elements to also support traditional base stations onadditional frequency bands. This protects an operator’s existinginvestments by eliminating the need to install additionalantenna elements when deploying new bands. Future activeantenna systems will also support multiple bands on theiractive elements.
