tonnes per hectare respectively. Officers in the ministry would visit Nagaland to
explore “better utilization and value addition” of agricultural produce and
transforming agro-food industry for export revenue. Mrs. Badal believed that
Nagaland food processing industry would not witness any slump due to

Horticulture and food processing Minister of Madhya Pradesh Mrs. Kusum
Mahdele has urged investors at MP Food-Tech 2015' organised by Union food
processing ministry and Indian Chamber of Commerce to take interest in setting
up food industries in Madhya Pradesh. According to Mrs. Kusum Mahdele,
there are better investment possibilities to set up food processing units in the
Madhya Pradesh in view of increased production of food grains, horticulture
crops and milk. Mrs. Mahdele felt that food processing units were less in
number in proportion to production achieved in the state during the last 10
years. Madhya Pradesh has a climate conducive for all crops. It had outdone
other states in production of milk and food grains. This year, there has been
bumper crop of orange in the state. She pointed out that food processing units
should be set up for crops such as orange, guava, and ber, which were abundant.
Farmers will get maximum benefit if more units are set up. According to her,
the state has moved to fourth position from seventh in the country in milk
production. It can outdo Amul if investors take interest in production of milk
and its products. Mr. R.N. Kulkarni, chief general manager, NABARD, Bhopal,
informed that Government of India was promoting food industry and making
constant efforts to put it in good condition. The Central government has
allocated Rs. 5,225 crore for food business. Union deputy secretary food

India: The way forward for ready-to-eat products
Source: FnBnews.com, 21st Dec, 2015
In India, food processing is estimated to be a $121-130 billion (around Rs 7.5-8
trillion) industry, driven by the dairy sector (35%) and marine and poultry
(32%), according to a report by Confederation of Indian Industry. Also, in India,
only 2% of fruits and vegetables are processed as against 65% in the US.
However, off-season consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is rising—the
exotic lettuce available during the Delhi summer most likely came from the hills
of Ooty in Tamil Nadu, the beans and capsicums from Himachal Pradesh, and
the shiny apples likely travelled continents from the US, without losing their
sheen or juiciness. Once such food processing technologies are developed, retort
processed foods that do not need rehydration or preparation, may be consumed
straight from the pouch with or while not pre- warming, relying upon the
necessity of the users and therefore the weather. These foods meet the particular
wants of convenience; organic process adequacy; ambient storage and
distribution to the centres and shelf stability have made these extremely
successful and most suited to Indian cuisines. Hence a number of tasty Indian
dishes in retort pouches enable consumers to enjoy their favourite foods such as
sooji halwa, upma, and chicken curry. The use of retorting technology has thus
6
created the sale of “ready-to-eat” foodstuff commercially viable with in vogue
food styles. The pioneer for the development of RTE in India has been the
Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL); Mysore was established under
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to fulfil the needs of
varied foods of Indian Army, Navy, Air Force and paramilitary forces. Their
aim is to design and engineer lightweight convenient packed food with longer
shelf-life under varying climatic conditions - using the self- developed
technologies, DRFL has produced many ready-to-eat, quick cooking and instant
foods with longer shelf-life. Some of them are long-keeping chapatis (shelf-life
six months), high protein snacks (shelf-life nine months), spiced potato parothas
(six months), fruit bars (nine months), mutton pickle (six months), and
stabilised chikki (one year).

India: Largest producer of soybean, MP has few entrepreneurs for its food
products
Source: The Times of India, 20th Dec, 2015
Known as largest producer of soybean in country, Madhya Pradesh has the
lowest number of people taking up entrepreneurship for its food products. Out
of 560 trained, only 30 people have started their soy product business so far.
Director of Soybean Processing and Utilization Centre, Dr SD. Kulkarni, at MP
Food Tech 2015 said that we have been training people from all over country
who visit the centre to learn about food processing from soybean, but
entrepreneurship for this is quite low here. According to satellite survey 2015,
the area under soybean cultivation in Madhya Pradesh is 56.127 lakh hectares,
as compared to government's figures of 59.062 lakh hectares. Madhya Pradesh
produces about 60 lakh tonnes of soybean every year, which is 55-60 per cent of
total production in country. MP Food Tech was organized by Indian Chamber
8
of Commerce and Ministry of Food Processing Industries. Soybean Processing
and Utilization Centre, 2400 people have been trained from all over the country,
but only 450 have started their business related to soybean products. However,
Punjab and south Indian states are taking much interest in setting up business
for soybean products which are much in demand these days. In Punjab, out of
over 200 people trained 127 have already taken up business of soya products.
Mr. S.K. Verma, deputy secretary, ministry of food processing and industries,
government of India, said that Indian food processing industry needs to innovate
and strengthen the present government's policy of 'Make in India'. There are
four food parks in Punjab, and two in MP. We look forward to see more in

India: Food Processing Industry: From farm to shelf
Source: FnBnews.com, 19th
Dec, 2015
Food processing began about two million years ago when our distant ancestors
put flame to food and “discovered” cooking. After that came other primitive
forms in food processing such as fermenting, drying, preserving with salt, and
so on. India’s food processing industry has a wide range of products that include
fruits and vegetables, meat, seafood and poultry, dairy and dairy products,
fermented foods and drinks, grains, cereals and millets, bakeries, confectionery,
nutraceuticals, ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook, sauces and spreads, and so on
and currently ranks fifth in the world in exports, production and consumption.
Though the ready-to-eat market is bourgeoning, the ready-to-prepare market has
already witnessed a reasonable amount of traction amongst the urban
households. India is rapidly moving towards becoming a globally important
market for the consumption and manufacturing of processed foods. According
to a report by FICCI, the industry is estimated to be around US$180 billion (Rs
8 lakh crore), and it contributes about 1.3-1.5% to India’s GDP. The growing
urbanisation, emerging cosmopolitan culture, the influx of multiple foreign food
chains, exposure to Western condiments and food items, globalisation of Indian
food has contributed to the growth of this sector.

India: FDI in Food Processing Sector
Source: FnBnews .com, 19th
Dec, 2015
India annually produces 205 million tonne of fruits and vegetables and is the
second-largest country in farm production in the world but unfortunately the
processing percentage is poor - only 4.6%. In contrast, countries like USA
(65%), China (23%) and the Philippines (78%) are far ahead of India in
9
reducing wastage and enhancing the value addition and shelf life of farm
products. This is an alarming signal for India as a large volume of the
agricultural produce is wasted. About 35% of the fruits and vegetables are
wasted annually due to poor storage facilities, amounting to a revenue loss of Rs
500 billion. Also, 80% of the vegetables rot due to high water content and lack
of processing facilities, resulting in a revenue loss of Rs 125 billion. The Indian
food industry is projected to grow from US$100 billion to US$300 billion by
2017, according to a report by a leading industry body and Technopak. During
this period, the share of processed food in terms of value is expected to increase
from 43% to 50% of total food production. India allows 100 per cent FDI in
food processing sector. Foreign firms do not require government's approval to
start business here. Moreover, they can take advantage of the development
schemes offered by the government. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is an
international financial flow with the intention of controlling or participating in
the management of an enterprise in a foreign country. FDI plays an important
role in India’s growth dynamics. There are several examples of the benefits of
FDI in India. FDI in the food retail sector can expand markets by reducing
transaction and transformation costs of business through adoption of advanced
supply chain and benefit consumers and suppliers i.e. the farmers. India being
the second-most populous country in the world has immense scope for retail
expansion as along with time, urbanisation and consumerism have also been
increasing.

India: Smaller food parks better for farmers: Harsimrat Kaur Badal
Source: Economics Times, 10 Dec, 2015
Food processing minister, Mrs. Harsimrat Kaur Badal said that instead of giant
food parks, it is better to focus on small clusters covering 1-3 commodities
locally grown, which could bring prosperity to farmers' lives. The minister also
feels that a scheme where every Member of Parliament is given a grant to boost
local food processing sector will be beneficial. She also said that while the
former food minister's vision was to create big infrastructures at a food park, I
found that in most of the parks, infrastructure is way beyond what is necessary.
The park should not be restricted to 50 acres and should have the flexibility to
resize the park depending on need of the area. The scheme of mega Food Park
provides modern facilities for the food processing infrastructure along with the
value chain from the farm to market. The main feature of the scheme is cluster
based approach, with minimum requirement of 50 acre land. Under the scheme,
42 projects have been sanctioned by the government and out of these; five food
11
parks are currently operational. Mrs. Badal said that states should promote small
clusters, rather than going for mega food parks.

in part through an Australia-India Council grant, allows consumers to scan the
barcode of a packaged food item and see easy-to-understand information on fat,
sugar and salt levels, using the established traffic light labelling system of red
(high), amber (okay), and green (good). FoodSwitch then searches the database
for similar but healthier products and displays this on screen, alongside the
selected item, for comparison. Mr. Bruce Neal, senior director at the Institute
said that FoodSwitch helps consumers evaluate the nutritional content of
packaged foods and suggests better options that would have lesser sugar, fat and
salt levels. The app has already been launched in Australia, New Zealand,

India: Food processing and packaging now have a dedicated platform
Source: Packaging Europe, 25th Nov, 2015
To keep up with developments on the Indian food and beverage market,
the range of products and services at International PackTech India and drink
technology India will be joined by a third event – the newly developed
FoodPex India. It will focus on the processing and packaging of solid foods of
all kinds. In the future the newly created trade fair trio will map the thematic
areas of packaging and related processes, beverage technology and liquid
food as well as food processing and packaging under one roof. PackTech
India and drink technology India have already come to be seen as the most
important platforms for these industries in India. Mr. Bernd Jablonowski,
Global Portfolio Director for Packaging and Processing at Messe Düsseldorf,
the organisers of International PackTech India and of the new FoodPex India
said that the Indian market shows a clear interest in food processing and
food packaging. He also said that it’s a logical step to enhance this range by
adding a dedicated platform under the name of FoodPex, a brand which we
previously launched in China. India is a dynamic market with major potential
in packaging and related processes, particularly in packaged food and
beverages. Although per-capita consumption is still relatively low, figures
from the market research institute Euromonitor have shown that the demand
for processed and packaged food is set to rise by about 31 per cent by 2019.
During the same period soft drinks sales are even expected to rise to more than
twice their current level. India is already the world’s number one in milk
consumption, and its market for liquid milk products is developing very
dynamically. This development is driven by social change and clear economic
growth. Moreover, the resulting growth of the middle class has led to a
16
greater demand for hygienically processed and packaged food and
beverages. This is putting greater pressure on local manufacturers to invest
in high-quality processing, packaging and bottling equipment, so that they
can compete with imported products.

India: Soybean: A Nutritive Food and its Processing
Source: FnBnews.com, 16th
Nov, 2015
Soybean (Glycine max) is being used as food for over 5,000 years in China,
Japan and Thailand. It has now become a major source of protein, oil and health
18
promoting phytochemicals for human nutrition around the globe. It is the
leading source of edible oils constituting about 30% of the world supply. Soy
products are nutritious, economical and healthful. Use of 30-50g of processed
soybean in daily diet protects human health and enhances the longevity.
Soybean on an average contains about 40% protein, 23% carbohydrates, 20%
oil and reasonable amounts of minerals, vitamins and dietary fibre.
Supplementation (5-25%) of soybean in various traditional foods/recipes is
recommended. Soybean can be utilised in the form of whole bean or after
partially or fully defatting. The importance of soybean was again recognised in
India in early 1960s when research works were initiated at JNKVV, Jabalpur,
and GBPUAT, Pantnagar, incorporation with USAID and University of Illinois,
USA, to provide sound research base for long success of soybean in the country.
ICAR launched a multi-locational intra-disciplinary All India Co-ordinated
Research Project on soybean, subsequently supported by establishment of
National Research Centre on Soybean established at Indore. The research
efforts have sequentially led to identification and development of a number of
improved varieties, production technology, companion cropping, crop
management, disease and pest control measures and so on. CIAE, Bhopal;
JNKVV, Jabalpur; GBPUAT, Pantnagar; RAU, Udaipur; and so on are the
research and development organisations, which have developed different types
of agricultural machinery required for harvesting, threshing and processing of

Australia: An app to scan nutritional contents in packed food
Source: Business Standard, 08th Dec, 2015
The mobile application, funded in part through an Australia-India Council grant,
allows consumers to scan the barcode of a packaged food item and see easy-to-
understand information on fat, sugar and salt levels, using the established traffic
light labelling system of red (high), amber (okay), and green (good).
FoodSwitch then searches the database for similar but healthier products and
displays this on screen, alongside the selected item, for comparison. Mr. Bruce
Neal, senior director of the George Institute for Global Health said that the app
sometimes made complicated information on nutrition panels immediately
understandable. He also said that FoodSwitch helps consumers evaluate the
nutritional content of packaged foods and suggests better options that would
have lesser sugar, fat and salt levels. The app has already been launched in
Australia, New Zealand, Britain, China and South Africa; India is the sixth

Belgium: Heat and high pressure: new technique to process food
Source: Your is.com, 11th Nov, 2015
High pressure to preserve and sterilize some foods, prolonging their shelf life:
this old method of food preservation is called High Pressure Processing (HPP)
23
or Pascalisation, from the name of the 17th century French scientist Mr. Blaise
Pascal, famous for studying the effects of pressure on fluids. In Japan since
1990, HPP has been used to preserve some juices, jellies, and jams, whereas it is
now used to preserve fish and meat, salad dressings, rice cakes, and yoghurts. In
the US the technique has been used for guacamole: it did not change the taste,
texture, or colour, but the product’s shelf life increased from three to thirty days.
Now a new version of HPP, the so-called “High Hydrostatic Pressure in
combination with Temperature” (HPT) technique, could represent a significant
improvement in food processing, by adding a heating step to the high pressure
processing. The combination of a preheating stage and high pressure is expected
to sterilise food products and ensure greater food safety, freshness and
nutritional quality, while extending shelf life. In addition, HPT promises to be
environmentally friendly thanks to its low energy costs and reduced water
consumption.
