New Technology Specialists Team looks to add value
NHP Holdings welcomes new ChairmanN E W S
NHP constantly strives to remain at the forefront of our industry by ensuring we have the technology, skill base and resources to deliver the best possible outcome for our customers.
To continue as a Leader in our field and be the Industrial Electrical Supplier of choice, it is important that we foster and grow an “expert culture” and as a result, the newly created “Technology Specialist Group” has emerged. This important addition to our business will be responsible for providing Application and Product specialised technical support to our customers and to our “customer-facing” team across the Company.
In this competitive world where information is available at the “touch of a button”, adding real value needs to go beyond the written word. Our Technology Specialist group will be available to assist and to offer expertise to our customers as part of our “day to day” business offering – this is primarily a pre-sale activity.
We believe that NHP’s core value of delivering what our customers wants, when, where and how they want it is enhanced by providing the technical expertise of this specialist group - the “Right People”, “Right Place”, “Right Time” with the “Right Knowledge”. NHP has the “Right People” who provide “Right Knowledge” across all regions in our key markets in both Australia and New Zealand.
Our dedicated and proud history of building strong relationships with our customers is a commitment which will flow on through our Technology Specialists. The benefit is now even greater as customers have access to some of the best people in their chosen fields within our industry. It’s our way of delivering that important extra value that most of our competitors simply can’t match.
Whilst NHP have always been dedicated to providing quality products and solutions backed by expert technical knowledge, our point of difference is now being able to have our “experts” become more customer-facing.
Many can compete on price but few can compete on the complete NHP value proposition!
Lloyd Thomas - Managing Director, CEO
On the 28th of May, 2013, NHP Electrical Engineering Products Pty Ltd founder, Nigel Peck AM, officially retired from his position as Chairperson of NHP Holdings Pty Ltd which is the sole owner of NHP.
Since founding the company in 1968, Nigel Peck has overseen NHP’s progression and development and leaves the organisation as a proudly Australian owned company committed to serving the electrical industry – just as it was the day it began over 45 years ago.
Much admired for his successes within NHP, Nigel Peck’s services to the electrical industry reach far greater than the company itself and in 2004 he received national recognition for his work in the electrical industry by becoming a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).
Nigel Peck hands over his responsibilities to David Thomas who also has an association with the company, spanning back to his father’s initial involvement prior to the commencement of operations in 1968.
Of no relation to NHP’s CEO and Managing Director Lloyd Thomas, David becomes just the second Chairman in NHP’s 45 year history. Alongside this role David will also become a Director of NHP and is excited by the opportunities the NHP business has to look forward to in the next phase of our history.
“In taking on this role I am fully committed to maintaining NHP’s position as a privately owned and independent Australian company as we prosper well into the future. These are qualities that form the foundation of NHP and my appointment will ensure this continues”.
Nigel Peck will remain on the board as a Director of NHP Holdings Pty Ltd.

As is widely known, solar power is a clean and cost-effective way to generate renewable electricity in Australia. The challenge we face today however is how we can harness solar power to reduce Australia’s dependence on fossil fuels. As renewable energy becomes more and more important to lowering greenhouse gas emissions, making solar power more efficient and effective has become more critical than ever before. New technologies are constantly being explored, projects are being undertaken, challenges are being overcome and techniques are being refined to enable solar power to become a reliable, stable power source for Australia’s energy future.
One such solar project recently undertaken in Mildura, Victoria by leaders in solar power innovation, Solar Systems, really puts Australia on the world stage. Forming the largest project of its kind in Australia, this new solar demonstration plant is capable of powering up to 500 homes and utilises cutting edge concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) technology that, with the help of NHP, has paved the way for exciting future expansion and development in this industry sector.
Located in Carwarp just outside of Mildura in northwest Victoria, the 1.5MW facility captures sunlight courtesy of 40 fully commissioned ‘dense array’ CPV dishes that operate at approximately 40% efficiency. Put simply, that means the solar cells are capable of converting 40% of the sun’s rays into reusable energy – approximately double that of silicon-based cells and four times that of thin film cells.
This unique solar technology was developed by Solar Systems (a subsidiary of Silex Systems Ltd) at their manufacturing facility in Abbotsford, Melbourne. While the module costs are greater than flat panel photovoltaic, this is balanced out by the low-cost mirrors that form the surface of the dish and reflect the sunlight onto a small-area solar conversion module.
This design concentrates the natural sunlight to the equivalent of approximately 500 suns and further becomes a cost effective way of power generation that is ideal for utility-scale applications. Adding to the energy yield of the plant, the dishes are programmed to follow the exact location of the sun and ultimately optimise its position for maximum power output.
“The technology we’ve developed is based around a concept that uses high-efficiency cells that have come out of the Space industry”, says Dr Michael Goldsworthy, CEO and Managing Director of Silex.
“We are able to collect huge amounts of sunlight and focus it down onto a small area of these cells – the area of the dish is about 500 times the area of the cells and that’s why it’s called concentrated PV”.
To ensure that the grid connection was compliant with Australian standards, Solar Systems standardised on Santerno solar inverters from NHP. Renowned for their quality and resilience in all environments, the inverters role is to convert the DC current from the solar dish into grid compliant AC electricity, forming a critical element of the overall project. Coupled with the Medium Voltage Transformer from Trafo Elettro and NHP, the combination of quality product and reliable service was of major benefit to Solar Systems’ Project Manager, Ben Fox.
“We’ve worked with NHP in the past and have always had a strong relationship. In terms of this particular project we had some very specific requirements which NHP were able to cater to and if ever we had an issue they would resolve it – for that we thank them”.
The completion of the solar demonstration plant is an important development in the clean energy sector, that as well as offering a boost to the regional economy of Mildura, avoids 4,200 tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum. With plans underway to commission an expansion of the park to 100MW (subject to funding) and similar scale deployments in the USA and Saudi Arabia, this world-class solar plant is more than entitled to its moment in the sun.

With a host of iconic brands across Australia, New Zealand and Asia Pacific including Meadow Lea, Praise, White Wings and Wonder White, Goodman Fielder is Australasia’s largest listed food company. To support their market leading portfolio of consumer brands that compete in Australasia’s largest retail grocery and commercial categories, Goodman Fielder manufacture their products in over 40 plants in countries including Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Fiji. And supporting the Rockwell Automation products that power their Clayton manufacturing line in Melbourne is none other than NHP.
As the local authorised distributor of the Rockwell Automation products and services, NHP has formed a long-standing partnership with Goodman Fielder at their Clayton site, providing a bundled Services Agreement including TechConnect, Spare Parts Management, Field Services and Training. The makings of this partnership began in 2006 when the plant undertook an Install Base Evaluation (IBE) - essentially an audit of the existing Rockwell Automation hardware installed on-site.
The findings of this 2006 audit provided the basis for a Spare Parts Management agreement that saw Goodman Fielder establish a valuable inventory of critical parts, importantly, parts that were to be available around the clock. Shortly after delivery of the spare parts, the site experienced a failure on one of the bread lines; that in many cases would prove to be costly in terms of time, money and of course, market share. However, calling upon the spare parts inventory, the failed part was promptly removed, the spare installed and manufacturing of the bread line was successfully restored with a significant reduction in downtime.
Since implementation of the Services Agreement, savings that were experienced at the very beginning of the agreement have continued. In 2012, following changes made to the Clayton plant over time, Goodman Fielder undertook a further Install Base Evaluation – including third-party hardware.
“Production uptime is integral in daily fresh fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) such as baking – and this is definitely the case at Goodman Fielder”, said Goodman Fielder’s, Lee Goral.
“Having a full range of old and new Rockwell Automation products on-site as well as third-party alternatives prompted us to undertake the IBE with a view to standardise and reduce spares inventory”.
Following the four-day plant based audit of this facility, Goodman Fielder was presented with the findings at NHP’s National Manufacturing and Distribution Facility, located in Laverton. The findings highlighted potential improvements and outlined a detailed migration plan which laid the groundwork for future works on plant based upgrades including the standardisation of hardware. Given the successes experienced via the initial Services Agreement, both financial and time, plans are in place and some implemented with recent upgrades to the bagging line with new PanelViews and software conversion.
With technology updates over the years, migration to current platforms and software has demonstrated greater effectiveness, reduced downtime and production uptime to maximise market share.
In today’s environment, regulatory compliance, quality, continuous improvement and audit ability is critical in order to achieve Operational Excellence. Oversights can be costly, impacting bottom-line profitability and long-term viability, which can prove to be a high price to pay in this competitive marketplace. Savings are made with wastage reduction and the model approach that Goodman Fielder has taken at their Clayton site in terms of investing in their business, identifying risks and taking the necessary steps to avoid them affecting their operation is one that will continue to reap rewards and ultimately support the long-term goals of the organisation.

When it comes to Terasaki Air Circuit Breakers from NHP, we are pleased to offer a range of new options to ensure you have the functionality you need to suit your application!
TemPower Rack remote racking device
Manually racking large circuit breakers into the connected position is a potentially dangerous operation, as it usually represents a point in time where large electrical connections are being made while on-site personnel are in front of the breaker. The TemPower Rack helps to increase operator safety by allowing this procedure to be performed remotely, thus isolating the person from potential danger.
TemVision remote monitoring and control
In modern switchrooms, safety and convenience are top priorities. The TemVision interface can facilitate this by allowing operators to easily control and monitor ACBs from a remote location, away from any potential hazards. With TemVision, users can monitor phase currents, perform ACB open and close operations and view information about trip events.
TemRelay external alarm module
The TemRelay module provides individual trip and alarm indication, removing the need for difficult and costly OCR modifications. This information is obtained from the ACBs via the standard Modbus communications facility.
So next time you require a Terasaki Air Circuit Breaker in your application, remember you can add these three great options to improve the functionality and safety of your operation.
NHP have just released a new range of N-Line quality isolating switches.
Available in 10 A, 20 A and 40 A for both single and three phase applications, the N-Line Isolators are ideal for the HVAC and mechanical services industries. The new N-Line isolators are a cost-effective solution to any application, be it reverse cycle air conditioning, pool/spa pumps, outdoor lighting and many more.
With a large isolator handle for easy operation and a padlockable switch in the ‘OFF’ position, this quality range of isolators also offer IP 66 protection and stainless cover screws as standard. While the RAL 7035 UV resistant polycarbonate provides the durability required for your application, the generic mounting and entries combined with 2 pole switch mechanism as standard (for single phase models 20 A and 40 A) offers increased flexibility and ease of use.
The newly released range of N-Line isolators joins the popular range of N-Line enclosures that together provide a cost effective solution that does not compromise on quality and durability.
