Mosaic of growthAn intricately designedtile mosaic that adornedthe original lobby ofCarle & Montanari’s first
factory depicts a timeline of each machine and when itwas developed. The mosaic was carefully moved to thelobby of the new head office in Rozzano (Milan), whereemployees and visitors can see it today. An additionalfactory and office is in Bologna, where packagingmachinery is designed and built. Under SACMI’s lead-ership, Carle & Montanari continues to build its busi-ness on cocoa presses, chocolate refiners and conches,tempering equipment, moulding lines and high-speedpackaging equipment. The newest packaging equipmentis Carle & Montanari’s V-Pack Series for double-twisted, bunch and folded chocolate wraps. There aretwo models with new features: the V-Pack 2 with speedsof up to 800 pieces per minute, which came out in timefor the last Interpack 2005; and the V-Pack 1 wrapperthat debuted in 2007, combining lower speeds with ver-satility and a cost-effective price.
Across the AtlanticCarle & Montanari USA opened its first offices in Hack-ensack, New Jersey, in 1956 under the leadership of CaesarMascherin, followed by Connie Cockinos, president, whogrew the company until it expanded and relocated toRaleigh, North Carolina, in 1990.
When Cockinos retired in 2000, Moreno Roncato,president, joined the company. Today, at the Raleigh loca-tion, Carle & Montanari USA employs technicians formoulding and wrapping lines, plus personnel in sales andspare parts.
Carle & Montanari celebrate 100 yearsCarle & Montanari S.p.A. (a part ofSACMI in Italy) is celebrating 100years of developing and manufactur-ing chocolate production and pro-cessing equipment, as well aspackaging equipment. The companybegan in 1907 when 23-year-oldEnrico Carle built the very firstgianduiotti forming machine, inBrescia, Italy.
Carle & Montanari now has nearly80 businesses worldwide, with pro-duction plants, dealerships and serv-ice organizations in 23 countries.
The beginningsFounder Enrico Carle was born in1884, and learned to work as amechanic in the early part of the 20th
century at Fiat automobile company,until he left to begin his own company in 1907, in Bres-cia. He first created a gianduiotti machine that formedpieces of chocolate in a triangular shape typical to Italy.Carle joined with several partners as the company grew,until he moved to Milan where he started a businesswith a new partner, Montanari, in 1928. Since then, thecompany name and the brand has remained Carle &Montanari.
Major inventions came about with the triple rollrefiner in 1932 and the first moulding line — theCavemil—in 1948. The ’50s were an intense period forCarle & Montanari. Important machinery was intro-duced, including the five-roll refiner with hydraulicpressure control between the rolls and the Cloverconche. In the same period the new wrapping divisionwas started in Bologna. Expertise in chocolate machin-ery manufacture grew through the first generation andinto the second when Enrico’s son, Giovanni Carle,expanded and built upon those foundations.
