Spring Greetings Grizzly Families!
We wanted to take a moment and
thank everyone for the hard work and
dedication this year—
Our Student Parliament has been
working hard over the last month! They
organized a Rock N’ Roll day where fun
was had by all! Student parliament and
class reps are leading the way in kind-
ness and awareness. They have orga-
nized a Jersey day to commemorate the
Humboldt tragedy, will be wearing blue
to bring awareness to autism and will
continue to spend time talking about
and recognizing the power of healthy
relationships. International day of Pink
is April 10th. Please wear pink to hon-
our our Grizzly culture of inclusivity,
care and kindness.
Our school council is working hard
supporting our school. Part of their ef-
forts, apart from regularly supporting
the organization of our lunch programs
and volunteer reading, include our yard
rejuvenation three year project.
Don’t miss out on our current fund-
raiser, MacMillan’s and mark your
calendar for a day full of family
fun...the Grizzly SWAP N’ PLAY! This
event will be held on the first Satur-
day in May right here at GPS.
Mr. Williams and I are thrilled to
continue in our current roles as Act-
ing Principal and Teacher Adminis-
trative Assistant/Acting Vice Principal
supporting the educational journey
of your children here at Gravenhurst
Public School. We wish Mr. Goldring
continued success in his current role
as acting superintendent.
In learning
and well-
being,

SELF REGULATION CORNER
Resilience refers to how well we can stabilize after a
challenge. The more effectively we can recover from
the energy expended to deal with a stressor, the
more primed we are to deal with the next stress This
is an essential component of self-regulation.

GrIZZLIES are ReADERS!
READ…. Every day!
Our School improvement reading goal is:
Our students achieving level 3 or 4 on EQAO in
2019 will increase by 12%.
If we support students developing decoding and
comprehension strategies, including fluency, at their
instructional level then students will be able to inde-
pendently read and understand a text.
————————————————————————-
Encourage your child to read each and every day.
This might look like you reading to them, reading a
book, reading an article or reading information on a
website. Reading can be thought of as the process
of decoding or figuring out the actual words on the
page while simultaneously comprehending or un-
derstanding what those words mean. Fluency can
be described as a bridge between decoding or word
recognition and comprehension. Fluency is the abil-
ity to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expres-
sion.
One thing you can do at home to support your
child’s developing fluency is continue to read to your
child, pausing according to the punctuation and us-
ing an expressive voice. As well practicing word
recognition at a single glance helps your child devel-
op fluency.
What did you notice about my voice?
or
There is something I did when my eyes saw they peri-
od/exclamation mark/comma. What was it?
Happy Reading!

skills, including pre-reading skills, ....a life skill!

GrIZZLIES are mathematicians!
MATH….EVERY Day!
Our School improvement math goal is:
Our students achieving level 3 or 4 on EQAO in 2019
will increase by 12%.
If we support student learning opportunities to develop
automaticity, thinking flexibly and reasonably about
numbers then their ability to represent and solve prob-
lems in measurement and NSN will improve.
———————————————————————-
We want our students to see the power in math and
deeply understand the actions that happen when solv-
ing problems. The way we show or word a problem
can help with this. Start, change or result unknown are
three different problem types that help us see the rela-
tionships between operations (addition/subtraction,
and multiplication/division).
One thing you can do to help your child develop their
math skills with operations is to help them see the rela-
tionships between the operations. Wording questions
differently helps with this. For example,
I have some cookies….you gave me 8 more and now I
have 12. How many did I start with?
This type of a question helps your child see that addi-
tion and subtraction work inversely. It is an example of
a start unknown question because we don’t know how
many cookies we started with, only that it is some.
When solving this problem, it could be modeled as
something (the unknown) plus 8 equals 12. It could
also be modelled as 12 minus 8 equals what.?
It would look like this in a standard algorithm:
? + 8=12 12 – 8= ?
Happy Math!
