NEW JOINS OF LINEAR B TABLETS FROM KNOSSOS

by J. T. Killen

In May-June, 1961, I was enabled by grants from the Michael Ventris Memorial Fund and the Craven F’und of the University of Cambridge to v i s i t Crete, in order to study the o r ig ina l s of the Linear B t ex t s from Knossos in the Iralclion Museum. During th i s v i s i t , i t WES found possible t o make for ty-s ix joins of fragmentary ‘ c a t t l e ’ t ab l e t s , and the for ty-four tex ts restored as a resu l t a r e recorded here. I t w i l l be noted that the great majority of these jo ins a re w i t h fragments from the ‘7000’ s e r i e s , which previously had not been ser iously searched for t h i s purpose, and i t must be s t ressed that as a thorough examination of a l l the material WRS not feas ib le on t h i s occasion, the poss ib i l i t y remains of many more jo ins -involving members of thiw series beiw made i n the future.

Ihe restored tex ts a r e pr inted below i n t ranscr ip t ion , following the conventions adopted i n E. L. Bennett, J. ahadwick, M. Ventris The Knossos Tablets (Second ed i t i on with correct ions and addi t ions by J. Qladwick, with the ass i s tance of F. W. Householder: BICS Supplement No.7, 1959). with the exceptions tha t lacunae a r e indicated by square rather than round brackets, and doubtful signs by dots and not as te r i sks . Although, as there, no attempt i s made to provide a f u l l c r i t i c a l apparatus to the tex t , readings of KT 11 a r e recorded where these d i f f e r s ign i f i can t ly from those printed. To avoid confusion, the se r i e s c l a s s i f i ca t ions made i n KT 11 a r e retained, but an indicat ion of the se r i e s to which each tex t must eventual ly be assigned is added in parentheses. Although most of these t ex t s f a l l i n to categories of ‘cat t le’ record already w e l l known, and o f fe r merely addi t iona l a t t e s t a t ions of vocabulary famil iar from other D t ab le t s , occasional po in ts have been f e l t t o demand fur ther comnent, and t h i s a l so is added.

I am deeply indebted to Dr. N. Platon and Miss C. Mavriyannis for t he i r kind- ness i n making the t ab le t s ava i lab le for study i n I rak l ion , and to Dr. J. (Ihadwick, who has checked my manuscript, and made several suggestions towards i t s improve- ment&
