MARKET ANALYSIS
How to get familiar with your new environment ?
Phase 1 : Start with basic information
14
EXPLORE YOUR MARKET SEGMENT & SECTOR OF ACTIVITY
• What is precisely your trade & sector of activity ?
• What are the opportunities, and related sectors ?
• Is your profession regulated?
Websites of professional associations (conditions for the
exercise, requirements)
• What are the professional standards in the industry ?
(labour market information, minimum hourly wage, paid leave,
parental leave entitlements, redundancy rules, etc.).
• What are the names of the different positions,
occupations?

DIPLOMAS AND EDUCATION
Whatever the values of foreign qualifications: diplomas are hardly appreciable for the employer in Quebec
Obtain a comparative evaluation by the MIDI (Department of Immigration and Cultural Communities) www.micc.gouv.qc.ca
REMEMBER
In Quebec, Skills and Experience are
often more important than education

Phase 2: Gathering

BUSINESS NETWORKING
Business networking is a socioeconomic activity
by which groups of like-minded businesspeople
recognize, create, or act upon business opportunities.
A business network is a type of social network whose
reason for existing is business activity. There are
several prominent business networking organizations
that create models of networking activity that, when
followed, allow the business person to build new
business relationships and generate business
opportunities at the same time. A professional network
service is an implementation of information technology
in support of business networking. Many
businesspeople contend business networking is a
more cost-effective method of generating new
business than advertising or public relations efforts.
This is because business networking is a low-cost
activity that involves more personal commitment than
company money.
20
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Networking is a bit like “string-pulling“
Networking can help me to access the
“hidden Job market”
Through networking, I am less
exposed to competition
Networking is using the name of
someone to get introduced to another
person
Networking is thinking about how to
use others to achieve my personal
goals
As a newcomer, I have no network! *String-pulling : Focus exclusively on relationships (often placed above) rather than
skills to get a job or recruit someone
21
FEW TIPS TO START NETWORKING IN MONTREAL…
• Establish an exhaustive list, keep detailed
records (date, name, occupation, company,
telephone and comments) and follow-up
• Business Cards
• Active listening more than personal pitch
• Medium-term vision :
What am I willing to share in order to grow
with this network?
23
IF YOU WERE AN ATTRACTIVE PRODUCT …
Market your skills, market yourself
What are my specific
characteristics? Who are my customers?
What are the
benefits
I bring?
What
promotion?
What experience
the customers
could live? ...
Where to find me?
What about my
reputation? At what price?
